Why are the solutions ineffective?

What can be done to tackle these problems more successfully?

Global issues like pollution and global warming impact everyone, yet the policies implemented at the international level are insufficient to mitigate the issues. This essay explores the reasons behind the ineffectiveness of these measures and suggests methods to more successfully tackle these problems.

There are many reasons why environmental solutions fail to take hold effectively. The most salient is the lack of stringent enforcement at the national level. Many international agreements, such as the Paris Agreement, set ambitious targets to reduce global warming. However, the absence of binding enforcement mechanisms allows countries to prioritise economic growth over environmental sustainability, leading to inadequate reductions in emissions. Additionally, political short-termism, where leaders prioritise immediate gains over long-term well-being, exacerbates this issue, further hindering substantive environmental progress. This is largely due to the need for politicians to appeal to their constituents in the short term.

To address these challenges, two main strategies need to be implemented. IELTS Model Essay: Environmental Problems

In this post, I’m going to write an IELTS Writing Task 2 model essay in response to this question about environmental problems from Cambridge 14 (Academic) :

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

First of all, I’ll take you through my 4 Step Approach to essay planning :

Analyse The Question
Decide My Position
Generate My Ideas
Develop My Ideas

Step 1: Analyse The Question

The first thing to do is analyse the question. One way of doing this is to ( VERY carefully ) simplify the question. In this question, I think the simplified question is this:

What is the most important environmental problem? Is it species loss…or something else?

We can also simplify the 2 views:

View 1: species loss is the main environmental problem.

View 2: there are “more important” ones.

What might these “more important” environmental problems be? Global warming comes to my mind.

Step 2: Decide My Position

So, what do I REALLY think about this issue? In other words, what’s my position on this issue?

I think species loss is a major problem, but I think global warming is the more important one. However, I think the two problems are linked: my understanding is that global warming will lead to species loss anyway; if global warming causes species loss, it makes sense that global warming is the bigger problem.

Step 3: Generate My Ideas

Next, I need to generate some ideas for this essay .

I must also remember that the question is asking about environmental PROBLEMS, not solutions.

View 1: species loss is main environmental problem.

Well, I agree it’s important. Why do I think this?

important to protect species – we share the world – moral obligation
also loss of species affects humans (e.g. affects food chain, loss of fish in seas means less food for us)

View 2: there are “more important” problems.

I think global warming is a more important problem. Why do I think this?

danger that global warming will escalate and lead to runaway warming
ultimately this will lead to species loss anyway

Step 4: Develop My Ideas

Next, I’m going to develop my ideas using a logical structure . This will give me a clear essay plan.

Introduction :

species loss a major concern, but is it main one?

Body Paragraph 1

Main Idea: moral obligation to protect species
Explanation: loss of species is permanent, future generations
Example: dodo

Body Paragraph 2

Main Idea: loss of species affects humans
Explanation: food and drugs

Body Paragraph 3

Main Idea: global warming is more important
Explanation: runaway heating will lead to more problems, including species loss
Example: polar bears
both are important, but global warming will cause species loss, so it’s the most important problem.

I decided to write 2 separate paragraphs in my discussion of the first idea – it seems more logical to do this.

So, all I need to do now is expand these notes into full sentences and link them together ! While I write, I must, at all times, remember my position: species loss is an important problem, but global warming is even more important, and they are also linked.

So here’s my essay:

My Model Essay

The loss of natural habitats, in part due to intensive agriculture and industrial-scale mining in some parts of the world, as well as urbanisation, has put the survival of many species of plants and animals under threat. While this is certainly a major concern, is this the most pressing environmental problem that we should deal with?

I certainly feel that humanity has a moral obligation to safeguard the survival of different species of fauna and flora. The loss of any species is permanent and means that future generations will not be able to appreciate the wonders of a diverse natural world. For example, the tragic extinction of the dodo is something which we still lament even today.

Moreover, it can affect us detrimentally too. Many herbal remedies are derived from plants, and so the destruction of rainforests could easily have a negative effect on the production of medicinal drugs. In addition, we are part of a natural food chain, so the loss of animals, such as fish, means we will have less food in the future.

Ultimately though, there is a far wider problem that needs to be addressed: global warming. As a result of emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, global temperatures are rising and we risk seeing runaway heating. This will lead to a number of problems, including flooding, extreme weather and drought, but also the extinction of species. Indeed, polar bears are already struggling to survive because of the loss of polar ice caps due to rising temperatures.

In other words, working to safeguard the survival of the natural world without tackling global warming would be entirely ineffective, so it’s not really a case of which one is more important: all environmental issues are ultimately interconnected, and so we need to take a holistic approach to the issue.

My Comments

Task response: had I just argued that global warming was more important than species loss, it would be good enough for a Band 7 or 8 for TR, but I went further: I argued that both problems are important, and that they are linked. It’s a more developed position, and I think worthy of a Band 9. But explaining this position requires some advanced language, so it’s tricky for many students to do well.

Vocabulary : I desperately wanted to use the phrase “flora and fauna” somewhere! (If you don’t know it, fauna = animals, flora = flowers. There’s also a lot of natural collocation in this essay, and these phrases have precise meaning:

intensive agriculture
industrial-scale mining
under threat
the most pressing environmental problem
has a moral obligation to
herbal remedies

There’s some repetition of words: loss, survival and species are repeated, but this is not a problem. I’ve tried to paraphrase where appropriate (e.g. “natural world” instead of “species”).

Overall, the essay uses “natural and sophisticated control” of vocabulary, with no errors (as far as I can tell!) so it’s at a Band 9 level.

Where is conclusion ? I think conclusion is mandatory to complete the essay without sum up or conclusion it will affect on overall band score, from task achievement no one can get good band score.

The conclusion is in the final paragraph, which starts “in other words”. It probably would be clearer if I’d started it “in conclusion”, but I used a different discourse marker to improve the flow of the essay.

I think this question is really tricky. The topic itself is simple: environmental problems.

Some ielts questions have tough topics – like space tourism – but this one is easy enough for most people to write about., the tricky part is related to the question itself. it is not asking you to just write about environmental problems., you must have a clear reason why losing animals and plants is the most important problem., and then a different reason , not related to plants or animals, Many are of the opinion that the main cause for environmental problems of our time is due to the loss of specific species of plants and animals whereas some are of the opinion that there are more severe environmental problems. I partially agree that both of them might be the reason for this issue.This essay will discuss the reasons below.

On the one hand , it is due to global warming which is causing an imbalance in nature . As we know, we follow an ecosystem where plants , animals and humans are inter-connected in order to survive so that the oxygen and carbon-di-oxide is balanced out but due to irregularity in nature such as deforestration , pollution etc is causing harm in order for plants and animals to survive.Loss of specific species for example , Polar Bears which are mainly found in the Arctic is one of the endangered species as the Arctic caps are seen to be melting and it is said that by 2030 , polar bears will become extinct.This is a detrimental sight for the near future to come.

On another hand , it is the change in climate which is caused by natural calamities. Many scientists have claimed that the natural calamities mostly relating to oceans and seas like hurricanes , tsunami , cyclones are causing climate change in the environment . And extreme conditions like scrotching heat being responsible for famine and drought. For example, A few years ago India faced extreme conditions of cyclones roughly for 2 months which caused floods and right after came the summer and faced a severe situation of drought in the northern parts of India. Many farmers faced a huge loss in their yields of crops due to this irregular change in the climate.

In conclusion , in my opinion it is not just about losing plants and animals but the factors like climate change and how humans are getting affected by it as well. Even though humans are slightly responsible for this cause we still have time to resolve it by protecting the planet by saving environment.

There is an argument about whether the reduction of species is the biggest environmental problem or not. In my opinion, the protection of species is the most serious one, because it may lead to a calamity. Furthermore, we have the clear solution that we can make our effort in this moment. Creatures ensure that the ecosystem works in a perfect situation. The relationship between animals and plants has been built since life appeared on earth. The best example has been presented in the famous cartoon movie The Lion King. As the lion said, grass is eaten by small animals which are eaten by lions. Small animals and lions die in the end, and become fertilizer feeding grass. It is clear that all of life is involved in this simple ecosystem. The missing of one part could lead to the destruction of other parts. Our excllent world is formed by bioligical diversity, and we can not let it go. Moreover, we have a conspicuous idea for dealing with this problem, which is to protect the habitat and stop hunting. Building a shell for creatures can protect all parts of the ecosystem. As long as the ecosystem is complete, animals and plants will make the ecosystem intensive. However, hunting beasts or cutting down precious trees destroys a part of an ecosystem, which results in damage to the whole habitat at last. Let us take the movie “The Lion King” as an example again. The reducing number of lions contributes to the increasing number of small animals which eat all of the grass, and they will become extinct in the end because of lack of grass. In sum, protecting species is the most important project to protect the earth, because we all live in a huge ecosystem. We also have a solution that we can undertake right now. What’s more, the earth is protected by all of the creatures, and the mission of humans is to protect them.

Lastly, protecting the environment can also help local people who live in tourist areas. Sometimes, when there’s too much tourism, it can cause problems like not enough water or too much trash for local communities. If the government spends money on protecting nature, it can help solve these problems and make sure tourism doesn’t hurt local people’s lives. For example, in some countries, they limit the number of tourists who can visit sensitive natural areas. This helps protect nature and also makes sure local people can still use these areas.

In conclusion, I think it’s very important for governments to invest in protecting the environment when they develop tourism. This helps keep tourism successful for a long time, attracts tourists who care about nature, and protects local communities. By finding a balance between making money from tourism and taking care of the environment, countries can have better and more sustainable tourism.

Global warming also has the potential to change rainfall and snow patterns, increase droughts and severe storms.

Let’s additionally define droughts from this sentence.

Most people think it’s a period of hot and dry weather, but that is not completely true. It is a state or condition when human demands for water exceed its natural availability.

What consequences are we talking about? It’s very likely that you have heard a lot about these issues. Melting Glaciers.

The increase in mean temperatures has led to melting of most of the world’s glaciers .

But what drives the increase in temperature? Greenhouse gases are a widely discussed source. Some greenhouse gases occur naturally, but human activity leads to release of enormous extra amounts of greenhouse gases.

Population growth, deforestation , and factor farming are creating excess greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.

Deforestation . Deforestation is the clearing of trees without the intent of replanting them.

One of the consequences of deforestation is loss of biodiversity .

Another great word is biodiversity. Biodiversity is the variety of all living things on Earth which include plants, animals, and microorganisms.

Now we will continue with some new words associated with biodiversity.

Many species within a forest ecosystem are endemic to that habitat. When their habitat is lost, it could lead to their extinction.

Here we have 3 new words. The first one is extinction , which means that certain species no longer exist on the planet. The second word is habitat and means the natural environment of a plant, animal, or another organism. And the third word is ecosystem and means any community of living and not living things that work together.

There are some other useful words and phrases:

endangered species are those considered to be at risk of extinction .

There are over 1,300 species in the United States that are listed as threatened or endangered.

The ozone layer – a belt of naturally occurring ozone gas that sits above the earth and serves as a shield from the harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Unlike pollution , which has many types and causes, the ozone layer depletion has been pinned down to one major human activity.

In this sentence we see the very nice phrase ozone layer depletion. You will sound really smart if you use it somewhere.

Our next word combination is carbon footprint.

It is the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by something during a given period of time. Let’s find an example.

A carbon footprint can be measured for an individual or an organization and is typically given in tons of CO2 .

There are two gases which people often confuse – CO2 = carbon dioxide and CO = carbon monoxide. Their names are similar, and they are both dangerous in high concentration. So our best explanation is:

CO2 is produced by gasoline engines that use a catalytic converter.

CO is generated by gasoline engines that do NOT use a catalytic converter. I hope this clarifies the difference for you.

In most cases you will need to say or write something like ‘to reduce carbon dioxide emissions we have to do something…’

Our next phrase is hazardous waste.

It’s essential that hazardous waste is handled, stored, transported, and disposed of properly. No one should touch hazardous waste.

Another popular word when we talk about environment is contamination. Many people use it as a synonym of pollution, which is not completely correct.

Contamination is the presence of unwanted or foreign substances. Contamination may be natural whilst pollution is produced by the influence or activities of people.

Contamination of the fields could happen through overuse or misuse of pesticides .

Now we will define the word pesticide for you. Pesticides are chemicals that kill or manage pests. You may know those small Colorado potato beetles. Pesticides can help get rid of them.

Well, let’s move on. Landfill . Landfill is an area of land that is used to dispose of waste.

The purpose of a landfill is to bury the waste in a way that it will be isolated from groundwater, kept dry, and out of contact with air. Each country has a policy for landfills.

Now it’s time to talk about energy, the thing without which people cannot imagine living. The first phrase is renewable energy sources.

Wind, solar, and other forms of renewable energy could be the fastest growing power sources over the next few decades.

The next term is tidal energy . You know what tide is, right?

Tidal energy is a power produced by the surge of ocean waters during the rise and fall of tides.

Engineers around the world are working to improve the technology of tidal energy generators to increase the amount of energy they produce and decrease their impact on the environment.

Talking about renewable energy, there are some other sources of it, such as wind turbines and solar panels.

Wind turbine s are an affordable, efficient, and abundant source of electricity.

Some companies have embraced solar panels to improve their environmental profiles and to cut their operational costs.

But unfortunately fossil fuels still play a dominant role on the market. So another new word here is fossil fuels. Basically they are sources of energy in the form of remains of dead plants and animals. Sounds scary? Well, they developed over millions of years and are now available as coal, oil, and natural gas.

Some fossil fuels, such as coal, are abundant and cheap. Others, like oil, have a variable cost depending on geographic location.
