    In that field, JNU is unmatched. Professors help a lot. Except the new entrants who barely know anything. As far as going beyond 5 years is, that's a politically motivated hoax. JNU is doing really good in sciences and you'd be better off researching the faculty and seeing if anyone shares your research interest. Contact them with your proposal.

    Problem with delaying a PhD isn't with admissions but with your post-PhD career. The max age for professorships in India is 35. In Physics you'll need a PhD + at least 2-3 years postdoc exp to be eligible (this is for research institutions not the plain-teaching jobs.) You'll be cutting it awfully close if you delay the start by 3 years.
