Facebook account review: time, taking too long

In this article, we will answer several questions about the Facebook / Meta review process, such as how long does it take for Facebook to review your account? How you can speed up this process, and why does it take Facebook so long to review an account?

What is the Facebook account review?

Firstly, it is important to know what the Facebook account review actually is, and when to use it. The Facebook review consists of an online form that you need to fill in and submit. Below is what the form looks like.

As the form explains if you think your account was disabled by mistake, then fill in the necessary information and your profile will be considered for review . Even in the wording of this phrase, Facebook reserves the right to possibly not review your account.

Why are Facebook accounts reviewed?

There are many reasons why Facebook can decide to review an account, disabling it in the process . For example, if an account is deemed to pose any security threat, Facebook will automatically flag it for review . Accounts can also be blocked if the account was created using a false identity, posting spam messages, and because of age restrictions , among other reasons.

How long does it take for Facebook to review your account?

Being locked out of your personal or business Facebook account can be incredibly frustrating and understandably so. You want to access your account as quickly as possible, but the Facebook account review process can take a while, with no status updates, causing further frustration.

Now, as for how long Facebook takes to actually review an account… it depends . There is no set time limit or time frame for the Facebook review. Some users may find that their Facebook account is recovered relatively quickly within a few hours or days, others may find their account takes much longer, such as a few weeks or even months, and unfortunately, other users can wait indefinitely, with Facebook ultimately not unblocking an account. A typical time frame is anywhere from 48 hours to 45 days.

Whilst Facebook does use AI for their verification process which in theory should give quick response times if there are any discrepancies in the review process then your account can be flagged for a manual review which takes longer. For example, during the Covid-19 pandemic , Facebook account review times were extended due to members of the Facebook support team working from home and putting a strain on the review process. Users saw the following message:

Reviewing your information may take longer than usual Thank you for sending your information. We have received it. We have fewer people available to review information due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It may take longer than usual to review your account. We're always looking out for the security of people on Facebook, so until then, you can't use your account.

If the delay between the day your account was disabled and the day that you requested a review of this action was longer than 30 days then your account will be permanently disabled and you will no longer be able to request a review .

How long does it take for Facebook to review your ID?

Often, Facebook accounts are blocked for suspected false account names, and Facebook can ask you to confirm your identity to check that the name on your ID and the name of your account match. Facebook recommends that you allow at least 48 hours for a response.

If you still haven’t heard anything after 48 hours, you can see if your ID was rejected . If Facebook does reject your ID then you should receive a message explaining why it was not accepted.

Should I request another review?

If your Facebook account is under review after having filled out the Facebook account review request, then the worst thing you can do is request another review . This is because requesting another review could have the adverse effect of putting your review at the back of the queue.

While sending Facebook another review request may seem like the only proactive thing that you can do in this situation, it is not. Sending multiple requests also has the potential to flag unusual activity with your account with Facebook. Often when performing repetitive actions on even a non-disabled Facebook account, such as trying to change your Facebook name multiple times in a short period of time, Facebook can disable certain actions. Facebook could even prevent you from requesting a review if you send too many review requests.

Can you actually talk to someone on Facebook?

Whilst you can contact a Facebook representative for certain issues, you are unable to do so for any issue related to technical support, which an account review and a disabled account fall under. So no, you cannot talk to someone on Facebook about your disabled account.

What to Do if Your Facebook Ad is Stuck in Review

There is nothing more frustrating as an advertiser than a Facebook ad you desperately want to run that is stuck in review. I’ve been there.

A couple of months ago, I decided that I wanted to run a special Facebook ad campaign to promote my upcoming training. The day I created the campaign was Thursday, and the training would occur that following Tuesday. Just enough time to get an extra four or five days of promotion.

I didn’t think much of the “last-minute” approach to this campaign. I rarely have any issue with getting ads approved — and approved quickly. Often, ads are approved within 30 minutes, if not sooner than that.

So, I created the campaign and just assumed it would start running quickly. That night, I checked to see how it was doing.

Still “In Review.”

Okay, no big deal. I’m sure it will get approved during the night and start running while I’m sleeping. I wake up, check the status, and…

Well, that’s annoying. But I wasn’t prepared for how annoying this was going to get.

All of Friday passed. All of Saturday. I’m freaking out in the middle of Sunday as it’s been about 72 hours, and a campaign meant to promote a training course that starts in two days still isn’t running. What a wasted opportunity.

Of course, the initial blame goes on me. I should have created that campaign sooner. Even if the plan was still for a 5-day run, creating it and getting the approval sooner would have been smart.

But, let’s be honest. That’s not who I am. I create a lot of campaigns at the point of inspiration. They aren’t planned out days in advance prior to running. That may be a flaw, but it’s my flaw. So, this could be a recurring issue for me.

Facebook Chat Support

Unable to handle another minute of this, I decided to reach out to Facebook support. You can get help either via email or, when someone’s available during designated hours, chat support. If you haven’t used Facebook chat support before, you should. And the reality is that I should have reached out to them long before I did.

You don’t always get the highest quality response with chat support, but it’s at least a live person. I’ve found better and faster responses this way than dealing with automated systems.

To chat with a Facebook rep, go to the Facebook Business Support page . Bookmark that if you need to.

Facebook first tries to answer your question with a menu related to their online Help Center.

You might be able to find your answer there. Or you may be lazy and impatient like I am and want to chat with someone who will get you the answer you’re looking for.

Underneath the Help Center menu, you’ll see a section that reads, “Still need help? Find answers or contact support.”

Click “Get Started.” You’ll then see this…

Assuming you need help with ads, click that option. Now you’ll see this…

You could go through the wizard to find the answer you’re looking for. Or, if you’re lucky, there’s a support rep available and a chat option will appear at the bottom.

The chat option will only appear for you when a representative is available. This will depend upon day of the week, time of day, and potentially country and advertiser level.

The 24-Hour Rule

When I chatted with the support rep, I was told that they could force review of all ads that had been stuck in review for more than 24 hours. This was good since my ads had been in review for more than 72 hours!

Here’s the problem: A caveat is that the 24-hour clock restarts every time you make a change to the ad or ad set.

Well, I had done that. I was trying everything to get these ads reviewed. I created duplicates, made changes, you name it. As a result, I only had one ad at that moment that qualified under the 24-hour rule.

The support rep then pushed that ad through review, which was a start. And once it had been more than 24 hours for the other ads, I made the request for them as well.

Help Center Form for Ads In Review

Little did I know that there was another option: A Help Center form.

Yep, Facebook has a special form that you can complete when an ad has been stuck in review for more than 24 hours. It looks like this:

Go here to access the form: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/186912391909649

The first thing you’ll need is an Ad ID. This is different than a Post ID. An easy way to find it is to create a column within Ads Manager.

After selecting your ad, click the drop-down to Customize Columns.

Under Settings on the left, click “Object Names and IDs.” Then select “Ad ID.”

Note that you also could have searched at that top of that window for “Ad ID.”

Now you’ll have an extra column in your report that will include the Ad ID.

The second text box in the form is for “Case number.” Assuming you haven’t contacted Facebook about this before, you won’t have one. You should be able to simply enter “N/A” here.

That’s it! Facebook should (we hope) respond rather quickly to the request.

Above are two different methods to help push your ads into review if they have been pending for more than 24 hours. Remember: Do not edit the ad, or it will restart the 24-hour window!

Here’s what every business owner needs to know about Facebook reviews. After this quick video, we’ll discuss why they matter, the name change from “Facebook reviews” to “Facebook reccomendations”, the SEO implications, and how they affect online visibility.

Why Facebook reviews are important

Facebook is one of the biggest social media platforms on the Internet. It’s estimated that Facebook has more than 2.6 billion monthly active users . This presents a great opportunity for customers and prospects to engage with your business on the platform. They can like, share and comment on posts.

Customers can even use Facebook Messenger to communicate directly with the business. They can also leave a review (recommendation) showing their satisfaction.

Reviews posted on Facebook are meant to represent the genuine experiences of real customers. As a result, potential customers value the social proof they provide. Studies show that 92% of customers consult reviews before making any purchase decision. Facebook is the second-largest review site on the Internet, right behind Google reviews .

Facebook reviews are now Facebook recommendations

Facebook’s review system is unique since it’s one of the few review sites on the Internet that doesn’t use the overall star rating system.

While Facebook had used the overall star rating for many years, in 2018, the social media giant decided to switch to a binary system. Instead of recommending your business out of 5 stars, customers now have just two options to rate your business: Recommend or Don’t Recommend .

All of your old reviews are factored in as part of your Recommendation Score. This score takes into account your old reviews posted under the overall review rating as well as the ratio of customers who would recommend your business.

In its early days, Facebook had a proprietary algorithm called EdgeRank which determined what content showed up on users’ News Feed. The algorithm was based on three factors:

Affinity – Affinity measures how much the user has interacted with your page in the past. The more they interact with the page, the more likely it is that you’ll show up in their News Feeds.
Weight – Weight measures the importance of each different interaction. Facebook sees some interactions as more important than others. For example, a review with a photo or a video is a more important interaction than a plain-text review.
Time Decay – This factor measures how long ago the customer’s interaction with your business took place. The more time passes, the less importance EdgeRank gives to the interaction.

Facebook’s proprietary algorithm has gotten more and more complicated over the years. However, these three factors of affinity, weight, and time decay still hold great importance in determining what shows up in users’ News Feeds.

Facebook reviews affect two of these three factors: affinity and weight. That means the more reviews your business gets, the greater the likelihood of potential customers discovering your Facebook profile. These same factors still also apply to Facebook recommendations but are applied to the binary of “recommend” or “do not recommend”.

In addition to giving your business more visibility, having more Facebook recommendations and reviews encourages other customers to rate your business. Facebook recommendations also build brand transparency by showing the opinions of real people rather than plain old marketing statements. Specifically, they feel more genuine because they are from real people.

Facebook reviews and SEO

There are other benefits to collecting recommendations on Facebook. That’s because facebook reviews don’t just help your business get discovered on Facebook. The more Facebook recommendations you have, the more visible your business is on search engines. Since reviews highlight the authentic opinion of local customers, Google values them highly when determining search ranking. According to Moz , reviews are the third-largest factor determining local search ranking.

As you may have guessed from the topic of this blog, it’s not just Google reviews that matter when it comes to SEO. Collecting reviews on any and all sites will help your business rank higher in relevant search results.

Facebook is no exception.

Since Facebook is an authoritative site, Google values reviews posted on the platform.

How to manage your Facebook reviews

Here’s how your business can get started collecting and managing Facebook reviews.

If you want your customers to have the ability to leave reviews on your Facebook page, there are just a few steps you need to take:

Go to your Facebook Business page
Navigate and click on the “Settings” tab
Find “Templates and Tabs”
Click “Enable reviews”

With those simple steps, your customers can now leave a review on your business directly on your Facebook page.

Here’s how your customers can leave a review on Facebook for your business.

Sign in to Facebook.
Find the relevant business profile.
Click the “Reviews” tab on the left side of the screen.

4. Click “Yes” or “No” on the question asking whether you recommend the business.

5. Write a description explaining why you recommend or don’t recommend the business. The minimum description you can write is 25 characters.

It’s easy to enable real-time notifications for new recommendations and reviews posted on your Facebook business page. This way, you can respond to all recommendations, solve problems instantly, and thank happy customers.

Responding to your Facebook reviews is important, but in order to do that, you need to know when you get a new review. Here’s how to set up notifications for your reviews:

Find the settings section of your Facebook Page
Find and click on “Notifications”
Select the option “Get a notification each time there is activity on your page”
You’ll see that the “New Reviews” notification will be turned on.

Now you’ll get an automatic notification any time you get a new review on your page, so you can respond to it accordingly as quickly as possible.

How to ask for recommendations on Facebook

Want to collect more recommendations on Facebook ? Here’s how you can get started.

Make the Process Simple and Easy The harder the process of leaving a review is for the customer, the less likely they are to actually do it. A happy customer might say they’re willing to leave a review in person but might forget to do it as soon as they leave your store. After all, who has time to go and find your business’s Facebook page? Luckily, there’s a way to make the process quick and easy for the customer. Just send review requests emails and texts that link directly to your Facebook business page. All the customer has to do is click the link and leave a review.
Timing is everything To get the best results, send review requests regularly. We’ve found that businesses get the best results when they send review requests on the same day as a customer’s interaction with them. If a customer receives a review request a month after the transaction, they may no longer have a clear memory of the sale. In this case, chances are that even your most satisfied customers may not write a review for your business.
Ask all of your customers for reviews Some businesses are tempted to ask only a certain group of customers for reviews, who they know will probably leave a positive review. Being selective with review requests only hurts your business. You’re missing out on sending review requests to customers who probably would’ve recommended your business. You’re also missing the opportunity to get honest feedback that can help you improve your business.

How to promote your reviews

Positive Facebook reviews show that customers trust your business and are willing to recommend your services publicly. You can leverage these reviews outside of Facebook as well, by promoting them on other marketing channels like:

One of the best ways to get more reviews is to embed review requests on your website and display them for your customers to see. You can add text that encourages your customers to click the link, which will bring them directly to your Facebook page, where they can leave a review.

You can also promote your reviews offline if your store has a physical location. An easy way to do this is to have a sign at the front of your store asking your customers to visit your Facebook page. You can even include a QR code that customers can scan that will bring them directly to your Facebook page.

What is a Facebook review link?

A Facebook review link is a URL that you can create to make it easier for your customers to leave reviews directly on your Facebook page. You can attach the unique URL on your website that will direct them to your Facebook page where they can leave a review about your business, product, or service.

In order to send Facebook review requests, it’s important to send a link directly to the review section of your profile. Here’s how you can get started.

How to create a Facebook review link

If you want to create a Facebook review link to drive your customers to your Facebook page, there are a few workarounds that you need to get past. The primary issue is that the customer will be directed to a login page on Facebook if they’re not logged in already. Here’s how you can bypass that problem and build a working Facebook review link:

To start, just use the Facebook login page URL: https://www.facebook.com/login/
If your customer just goes to this link and logs in, they’ll be directed to their Facebook feed instead of the page you want to direct them to. So, you’ll add a “next” command to the login URL like this: https://www.facebook.com/login/?next=

3. From here, you need to add your business page’s URL, but it’s not as simple as copying the URL and plugging it in. In order for this to work, you’ll need to convert it to HTML code. So, let’s say your company is called “XYZ Company.” Your URL will look like this: https://www.facebook.com/login/?next=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FXYZcompany%2Freviews%2F

If you want to easily create your own Facebook review link from this blog, just take the text for “XYZ company” in the URL and replace it with your own company name in your Facebook page URL. Once you plug that in, your customers should be directed to your Facebook page to leave reviews quickly and easily.

How to use the Facebook review link

There are a couple of different ways that you can use a Facebook review link to direct your customers to your page:

The easiest way is to share it with your customers directly. You can do this easily via email, text, social media, or other marketing outreach.
The next way to use your Facebook review link is to embed it on your website. By including the link on high traffic pages, you can direct your customers to leave a review on your Facebook with a single click.

To make sure that you get notifications for every new Facebook review, make sure that you follow the following steps.

Navigate to the ‘Settings’ section of your Facebook page.
Click the ‘Notifications’ tab.
Select the option ‘Get a notification each time there is activity on your Page.

4. Now, the ‘New Reviews’ notifications option will be turned on.

Once you do this, you’ll be able to stay on top of all the reviews that get posted to your Facebook business page.

You can disable recommendations and reviews from your Facebook business page, but we recommend keeping it turned on and just managing recommendations consistently.

It’s hard to have a great online reputation without reviews on a major site like Facebook. If you’re worried about bad reviews, remember that great responses can even make negative reviews reflect positively on your brand.

But there are other factors to consider. If you turn off customer reviews on your Facebook business page, visitors will not be able to see any positive or negative reviews that others may have left.

If you still want to do this, here’s how you can turn off all customer reviews:

1. Click on Settings at the top of your Facebook Business page.

2. From the menu on the left, select ‘Templates and Tabs’ .

3. Click on ‘Settings’ next to Reviews.

4. You’ll see a slider labeled “Show Reviews” . Turn this from “On” to “Off” .

5. Save your changes.

If you are worried about getting negative reviews, consider actively soliciting reviews from all your customers. Most of the time, only customers who feel that they’ve had strong negative experiences are motivated to leave reviews. Soliciting reviews is an easy way to balance the scales.

There is no way for a business owner to remove Facebook reviews posted on their business page without turning off reviews entirely. The only people who can delete these reviews are Facebook moderators or the reviewer who wrote them.

While you can report Facebook reviews (more on that in the next section), there’s no guarantee that Facebook will actually remove the review. That’s why we recommend responding to the review (more on that later).

Here’s how you can report a review that you think is fake:

1.Find the review that you want to report.

2. Click the three icons on the top right of the review.

3. Find the dropdown item that’s labeled “Find Support or Report Review

4. Pick your reason for reporting the review.

5. Click the “Next” button. You’ll see this screen. Click done to complete.

Once you have a good repertoire of reviews, you can use them as marketing material on your site. You can do this by embedding the reviews you want to display with a few easy steps.

Go to the reviews section of your Facebook page
Find the review you want to be displayed on your site
Find and click on the “embed” option
Copy the code that appears
Paste the code on the back end of the page you want

After you do this, you should see the review you picked displayed for your customers to see. This is a great way to show that you are receiving positive reviews and are a trustworthy business.

Actively responding to recommendations on Facebook — and any other review site — is crucial to maintaining a strong business reputation. Prompt, thoughtful responses prove to customers that you value their feedback.

Plus, today, customers expect responses to their reviews. This is a great way to show that your business is willing to listen to the problems of each individual customer. A study by Harvard Business Review showed that when businesses respond to all their customer reviews, they typically see more reviews and a higher overall star rating.

Here’s how you can respond to a Facebook review.

Find the review that you want to respond to within the Reviews tab on your Facebook business page.
Comment on the review the same way that you would comment on one of your friend’s Facebook posts.

Here’s how you can respond to positive Facebook reviews.

Thank the customer for the feedback- A “thank you” can go a long way in showing your appreciation and building customer loyalty.
Keep it short and sweet- Responding to a positive review should be short and sweet. There’s no reason to turn it into a long essay.
Encourage the customer to come back- Leave a short note to show the customer you’d be happy to serve them again. This can be as simple as “We hope to see you soon!”

Here’s how you can respond to negative Facebook reviews.

Apologize for the bad experience- The first step is simply saying “Sorry”. Show the customer that you regret their negative experience.
Be polite- A bad review can be frustrating, but avoid the urge to lash out. It’s important to be polite because other customers are looking at your review responses to see what kind of service they can expect from you.
Ask the customer to contact you directly- Provide a phone number or an email so that the customer can contact you. That way, any potential back and forth will not be in public view. Plus, if you’re able to resolve the problem in a private setting, there’s a good chance the customer can be persuaded to edit or even delete their original review.

If you see a review that you think didn’t come from a real customer, call it out. While you should remain polite, you should also let potential customers who read the review know that it isn’t an accurate representation of your customer experience.

When potential customers view your business’s Facebook reviews and recommendations, they also notice whether your business has responded, especially to negative feedback.

In Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge,” a “Rambo”-inspired riff on racial profiling and the insidious banality of evil baked into American policing, the filmmaker demonstrates his mastery of the taut action thriller. His skill with this subgenre has been on display since “Blue Ruin” (2013), through “Green Room” (2016) and “Hold the Dark” (2018). But in “Rebel Ridge,” Saulnier’s examination of space and pace transcends anything that has come before, as he coolly alternates extreme control with bursts of explosive fury over the course of two-plus hours.

It’s in this cadence that Saulier’s M.O. snaps into focus: his formal cinematic expression as a reflection of his protagonist’s state of mind. The story and style of “Rebel Ridge,” which Saulnier wrote, directed and edited, centers on Terry (Aaron Pierre), a man caught in a crushingly quotidian nightmare that spins out of control. Pushed to his limit, Terry maintains his cool, until he doesn’t, and it’s a thrill to watch how Saulnier lets this character off his leash.

In a star-making performance, Pierre is terrific as a man with a particular skill set thrumming below his composed, placid surface. With golden eyes, velvet voice and smooth gait, Pierre is like a puma prowling across the screen, but ultimately his character’s temperament is much more like a rattlesnake — coiled and ready to strike when threatened.

The plot engine of “Rebel Ridge” is the law enforcement practice of civil asset forfeiture. In the opening sequence, Terry is cycling through the Southern town of Shelby Springs when a police officer (David Denham) attempts to pull him over, sloppily hits Terry with his squad car, detains him and seizes the stack of cash in his backpack “under suspicion” that it’s drug money.

Terry had been carrying the cash to bail out his cousin Mike (C.J. LeBlanc) from jail, hoping to spring him before a transfer to the state penitentiary, where he’d be in dire danger as a former witness in a murder trial. But Terry’s money disappears into a property locker, where it will remain until he can contest the seizure in court, months later. A spunky young legal aide, Summer (AnnaSophia Robb), also informs him that the police department makes a habit of these seizures to fund its budget (and some margarita machines), after a civil suit resulted in a perfunctory “cleanup” of their corrupt practices.

By refusing to accept that the police department has stolen his money (and, in doing so, endangered his family) Terry has kicked a hornet’s nest, riling up a swarm of good-ol’-boy cops (including an excellent Emory Cohen), who answer to Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson). But what these cops don’t realize is that Terry is not someone to mess with, as they discover too late that he’s not just an ex-Marine. He’s a Marine martial arts instructor.

Saulnier uses the edit to evoke Terry’s increasing vigilance, constantly keeping tabs on everyone in his vicinity as he realizes just how deep the corruption goes in this town.

It is this detailed discussion of mundane legal details — and how the police manipulate policy to their own benefit — that is the point of Saulnier’s film. Terry has found himself descending into a hellish odyssey of bureaucracy, paperwork and a “justice” system that relies far too heavily on the discretion of small-town cops and judges who have their own motivations and biases, and who all too easily make decisions that value budgets over human lives: Black lives, female lives, addict lives.

Within this complex system of shifting allegiances, one highly skilled man can root out the weaknesses and disrupt the food chain. But hanging over the narrative is a sense of futility, that this can and will happen again and again. Another lawsuit, another life lost, another workaround. But for a moment, one man on a bike with a few expertly wielded weapons can wreak holy havoc on corrupt cops, and damn does it feel good to watch.

In 1666 the Great Fire of London was extinguished, having destroyed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, the Royal Exchange, Guildhall and St Paul’s Cathedral; in 1899 the first cases of evaporated milk (Carnation Sterilized Cream) were produced, in Washington, US. Nestlé bought the Carnation Company in 1984; in 1901 William McKinley, the 25th US president (1897-1901), was shot in Buffalo, New York, leading to his death eight days later. He was succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt; in 1948 Princess Juliana became queen of the Netherlands after the abdication of her mother. She went on to reign for nearly 32 years; in 1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, was buried in the grounds of Althorp, Northamptonshire, her family’s ancestral home.

Nature notes

Car parks don’t need to be deadscapes. A York park and ride doubles as an orchard, and people leaving their car at Northallerton railway station must walk through an avenue of the most heavily laden blackberry bushes you’re likely to see. Perhaps the most charming UK car park can be found serving the cricket ground at Chester-le-Street. Here, cricket fans have their cars shaded by mature trees whose graceful, arching branches provide birdsong while keeping the metalwork cool. One tree is a particularly fine white poplar. Drivers parking near it will easily locate their vehicle even after the busiest Test match: the slightest breeze teases the tree’s canopy into a wild, clattering dance of white leaves. At 30, The Armory Show Asks, Can Art Fairs Still be Relevant?

Among its 235 exhibitors from 30 countries, our critic finds these standout booths — and hails three local curators who have brought some sections exciting new life.

The Armory Show was founded 30 years ago by a handful of art dealers who treated the art fair format as a playful, ironic, even experimental affair. Held at the Gramercy Hotel in Manhattan, artworks were displayed on the beds, and viewers wandered from room to room taking in the cheeky display.

We’re a long, long way from that setup. Now The Armory Show has been swallowed up by a new owner, the multinational Frieze, and the art world calendar is so crowded with fairs that they run simultaneously: Frieze Seoul is underway at the exact moment as the Armory.

This leads to the questions: What do art fairs offer at this moment? Have they passed their due date? Can they assert their relevance?

The current edition of the Armory has approximately 235 exhibitors from 30 countries but stresses its New York roots. Along with global appeal, it’s also trying to recruit new art collectors from cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and it has hired some storied local curators to organize various sections.

Eugenie Tsai, formerly of the Brooklyn Museum, has curated a stellar group of monumental works along the fair’s median axis, in the “Platform” section, and titled it “Collective Memory.” This group includes well-known artists like Nari Ward, Sanford Biggers, Karon Davis and Nicholas Galanin.

Robyn Farrell, senior curator at The Kitchen, has organized the “Focus” section, which pays homage to the “experimental spirit” of the inaugural 1994 fair, but also the very first “Armory Show” in 1913 (called the International Exhibition of Modern Art), where avant-garde European art shocked and awed American audiences.

Town board approves comprehensive plan update — after nixing agri-resorts proposal.

The Riverhead Town Board ratified the town’s Comprehensive Plan Update on Wednesday after removing a controversial recommendation to rezone a section of the town’s north shore to allow for the development of agri-tourism resorts.

The change followed significant pressure from opponents, including Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupski and a coalition of Riverhead civic and environmental groups, who had scheduled a press conference outside Town Hall before Wednesday’s vote. A planned Sept. 18 public forum on agri-tourism has been cancelled.

The agri-tourism debate is one of numerous issues that have pitted local activists against town officials in recent years, including the cancelled EPCAL development deal , the removal in June of a recommendation in the Comp Plan to allow charter schools on industrial land, and voters’ rejection — twice — of the 2020-2021 school district budget.

After ratifying the modified Comp Plan Update on Wednesday, town officials warned residents opposed to the agri-resorts that if the town couldn’t come up with new ways to fund the preservation of thousands of acres of farmland and open space, taxes could skyrocket.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Tim Hubbard, who said he initially endorsed the agri-resorts idea but ultimately changed his position in response to public opposition, said that farmland in Riverhead is disappearing.

“We have a lot of problems in front of us,” the supervisor said at the end of the meeting. “Our farmers are selling their land. Our farmers cannot afford to make a living with regular farming. That’s why agri-tourism has become so big out here . The farmer has had to do it to survive.”

Between the drying up of local potato and duck farms, competition from subsidized Canadian farmers, and existing farmers’ ongoing struggles to survive, the supervisor said, Riverhead’s farming community is in a state of decline.

“The farmers’ children are saying, ‘Sorry, Dad, I see what you’re going through. I’m not going to do that.’ And they’re leaving, and the generational farms are disappearing — and this is a reality. No farmers, no food.”

Town Councilwoman Denise Merrifield said that much of Riverhead’s farmland is zoned residential as of right, meaning “the farmer can sell that land at any time. That is a big problem.”

She went on to say that there are 6,342 acres of unprotected farmland in Riverhead.

“That’s 42% that is still unpreserved. The town bonded in 2015 $72 million against future revenue to ensure that the town preserved key properties,” Ms. Merrifield said. “The bond will not be paid off until 2030, the town [purchase of development rights] tool preserved 1,126 acres. We can’t buy any more land in our town. The town’s [transfer of development rights] program so far only preserved 338 acres.”

Noting that Riverhead is projected in the next decade to add 5,000 residents to its current population of roughly 36,000, Ms. Merrifield said that “those residents are going to require services: our police department, our sanitation department, our highway department, our schools.”

With the threat of an influx of new students to the Riverhead Central School District from Southampton’s planned redevelopment of Riverside, “the Riverhead school tax is going to go astronomically up,” she said. Last month, Riverhead launched legal action to stop Southampton’s plan.

“We want to make Riverhead affordable for everyone to live in,” Ms. Merrifield continued, “and if we just keep zoning 2-acre homes, that’s not going to preserve much land. That’s not going to give us the tax base that we’re going to need to be able to keep all the citizens we want to keep in this town.”

Ms. Merrifield said that the town’s largest tax revenues come from commercial development.

“We have to do something,” she said. “To keep saying that ‘Sound Ave., or this place or that place is pristine and we have to keep it that way’ is ignoring immense tax problems that are coming because the population is coming.”

She said that relying on revenue from a future sale of property at Enterprise Park in Calverton is a long way down the road, since that property is likely to be tied up in litigation for years to come. In January, developer Calverton Aviation & Technology sued the Town of Riverhead. CAT’s 2018 contract to buy 1,643 acres of land at EPCAL for $40 million was cancelled by the Town Board last fall, after Riverhead’s Industrial Development Agency denied CAT’s request for tax incentives, citing a failure to adequately demonstrate “the viability of a financially successful project.”

Riverhead is federally designated as an Area of Persistent Poverty, an Environmental Justice Area and is considered Historically Disadvantaged.

Dermot Bannon’s Super Spaces review: Starchitect lights up the screen like sunlight through a megabucks extension

Television: new series exploring ‘spaces where we work, live, socialise’ occasionally lacks sensitivity in this housing crisis era.

Dermot Bannon ’s career as a celebrity architect has survived several recessions, a once-in-a-century pandemic and an ongoing property crisis that exists in a perfect equilibrium of tragedy and farce. He’s as indestructible as a 1970s bungalow. Were an asteroid to hit Ireland, Bannon would no doubt stagger out of the post-apocalyptic rubble, still rhapsodising about giant windows.

He certainly shows little wear and tear as he returns for Dermot Bannon’s Super Spaces (RTÉ One, Wednesday), a new series about the “spaces … where we work, live socialise”. It makes for a pleasing change from his regular gig, Room To Improve , the home make-over juggernaut that has started to repeat itself in recent seasons. Here, it’s all about exploring the new – such as the bijou Connemara treehouse that looks like something from the bit in Lord of the Rings where a talking tree kidnaps Pippin and Merry.

Roving around Ireland, Bannon also travels to Kildare (the posh part, near the Wicklow border) for a stop-off at a thatched cottage with a sci-fi minimalist interior straight out of the Mandalorian . And he makes his way to Limerick where former Ireland international Paul O’Connell gives him a tour of the International Rugby Experience.

It’s great fun, though the show occasionally lacks sensitivity, such as when Bannon visits the gentrified working-class suburb of Phibsorough in Dublin, where an architect shows off his snazzy rebuild of an old Georgian dwelling.

It’s a lovely house, and you wish him the best. But those who grew up in that part of Dublin – or any former working-class suburb around the county – may well be triggered by the sight of two architects rhapsodising about the joys of urban living when so many locals are priced out of these neighbourhoods and are instead condemned to stew in traffic in the commuter towns to which they have been exiled. The sense of eavesdropping on how the other half lives is almost overpowering.

There is a certain amount of guff spoken, too. “Ever since I was a kid I’ve been obsessed with spaces,” rhapsodises Bannon in one of several stream-of-consciousness pieces of narration. “[Spaces] don’t need to have four walls and roof. But they do need to excite and inspire.” Later, he talks about “connecting people to a building in a heartfelt way as opposed to in an archival way” – a sentence that really could do with being translated into plain English.

Viewers who have just made it home from several hours on the M50 may also roll their eyes at the show’s celebration of a cottage in the shadow of Croke Park . Note that this isn’t just any cottage bang in the middle of Dublin but one with home office, gym – and a natty periscope made using mirrors and a skylight.

Cottages with periscopes in Dublin city centre, endless suburbs 20 or 30km away … this is through-the-looking glass urban design and explains why so many people struggle to find somewhere to live close to their place of work (then what would you expect from a State where sustainability means the Government shelling out €300,000 on a bike shed ?). Still, that’s no reflection on any of the householders. Or on Bannon, who is full of bouncy energy and whose enthusiasm lights up the screen like sunlight through the bay windows of a megabucks extension.

Concert review: Magnetic presence of rising jazz-pop star Laufey

Laufey – Bewitched: The Goddess Tour (Asia & Australia)

Long gone are the days when Laufey, whose music is a deft meld of jazz, pop and classical, was a cult act.

In the past year, the half-Chinese, half-Icelandic singer has seen a meteoric rise in global popularity, and has almost single-handedly made genres from the 1940s and 1950s cool again among young adults and teenagers.

Playing to an audience of 7,000 – who were overwhelmingly Gen Z, with a sprinkling of Gen Alphas – all tickets to the show were sold out within minutes after they went on sale in May.

The 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist, whose name is pronounced “lay-vay”, seemed genuinely stunned that the crowd was much bigger than the audience at her gig here a little over a year ago at Pasir Panjang Power Station.

Here are three takeaways from her latest show.

1. She sounds better live than on record

It would have been ideal to hear her music in a venue designed for optimum acoustics – the Esplanade Concert Hall or Theatre, for example.

Singapore Expo Hall 7 is decent, but during the hushed moments, you could hear noise bleeding in from the outside, which was a distraction.

Still, the singer managed to turn the 90-minute show in the cavernous venue into what felt like an intimate performance, charming her way into the hearts of the fans with her magnetic presence.

There was a lot of heart in the banter between songs, when she regaled the audience with the stories behind her music, mostly centred on her experiences as a young adult navigating romance in the 2020s.

She prefaced the encore, Letter To My 13 Year Old Self, with a feel-good story about chasing her dreams, despite growing up feeling like a “nerd” who always felt out of place.

“I grew up always feeling really like I didn’t belong, you know?” she quipped. “I grew up in Iceland, and I’m half-Chinese, so I didn’t look like everyone else.”

Her alto voice was velvety smooth, and she nimbly switched among a Steinway grand piano, acoustic and electric guitars, and cello. Backed by a four-piece band and a string quartet, she also brought on twin sister Junia to play violins on bossa nova tune From The Start.

2. Her fans understood the assignment

“You’re so beautiful and so cute, and you all sing really well too,” she praised the crowd, many of whom wore classy dresses and had ribbons and bows in their hair, a staple look at Laufey shows worldwide. Some young men even wore suits.

Popular tracks such as Dreamer from Bewitched (2023), the album that won Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 2024 Grammys, elicited screams that could rival any K-pop show.

But there was also hushed reverence during quieter songs such as Second Best.

Tracks like Valentine and Falling Behind, both from her 2022 debut album Everything I Know About Love, sparked massive singalongs that almost drowned out her voice.

3. Her music is not all light and airy

Most of her repertoire harks back to a time before rock ’n’ roll became a driving force in popular music, designed to be sung by female characters in old black-and-white Hollywood films.

But her set list did include contemporary touches. Heartbreak song Lovesick, and its thumping drums, crosses over into pop-rock territory.

And while many of her tunes are laced with humour – Bored is an amusing takedown of men who talk only about themselves – she is capable of taking on darker tones in her music too.

The melancholic and cinematic Goddess, for example, with its post-rock undertones, is a raw rumination on a former lover who desired only Laufey the pop star, and not the regular human underneath all the glamour.

New synthetic drug found in Florida up to 20 times stronger than Fentanyl, UF expert says

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Medical professionals at the University of Florida are warning of a new deadly drug that is spreading in North Central Florida.

Isotonitazene is a synthetic opioid that was first developed in the 1950s to be a stronger painkiller than morphine, but has never been approved for medical use in the United States.

In 2022, the use of a synthetic combination of N-Desethyl Isotonitazene was reported by NPS Discovery , an open-access drug early warning system in the U.S. Now, UF physicians say they have been seeing an increase in Isotonitazene-related overdoses in Florida.

The drug, also referred to as “ISO,” can reportedly be 20 times stronger than fentanyl. Attorney General Ashley Moody issued an executive order in 2022 adding ISO and other nitazene compounds to the Schedule I drug list because of their ease of accessibility and high potential for abuse and death.

ISO has been linked to overdose deaths in Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm Beach, Pasco and Pinellas counties since 2022, according to UF researchers. At least one ISO-related overdose was reported in Marion County this summer.

UF Health Psychiatrist and physician Dr. Kent Matthias told TV20 that it is very likely ISO has made its way up to North Central Florida as well, but because of its synthetic nature, it is much more difficult to detect its presence and differentiate it from other opioids.

“From what my patients tell me, they think they’re gonna buy Oxycodone and the pill looks just like it,” Matthias said. “In reality, it’s either fentanyl or, it looks like more increasingly now, one of these variants like ISO.”

Matthias says even overdose-reversal methods like administering Narcan nasally can prove to be less effective when dealing with ISO.

“Because it’s so much stronger, it typically takes higher doses of Narcan to reverse it... It might take two, three, or four of those to start someone’s breathing again,” Matthias said. “If synthetics continue down this path, we’ll have to either change the dose of Narcan we’re giving people or go down this path of new medications for reversing it.”

Some of the newer overdose-reversal medications, like Opvee, have been approved at the national level. Similarly to naloxone (also known as Narcan), Opvee blocks the effects of opioids, but with a much higher affinity, thus creating a quicker solution that acts more effectively with drugs like ISO which are much stronger and have longer-lasting effects.

Matthias said ISO is being found most commonly in pressed pills and powders bought off the street -- but because most law enforcement’s drug tracking system technologies have not yet caught up, it is left undetected until an overdose occurs and ISO is revealed to be the cause of death.

As a recovery and addiction specialist, Matthias recommends people with addictions to substances keep multiple doses of Narcan on hand if they intend to use, or use the substance while supervised by someone who could administer Narcan in the event of an overdose.

Abstinence is ideal but not always realistic for those suffering from addiction, Matthias told TV20, and it’s important to remember the path to recovery is not always linear. A list of local treatment centers for drug rehabilitation and recovery can be found here .
