Attempting to write that perfect “book review” within just 300 words for ISC exams has been a common worry amongst ISC kids in my neighbourhood. With a considerable portion of marks allocated for this task, it is perfectly valid for students to aspire to maximise their scores for the book review question in ISC exams. Having been that student myself, I vividly recall the dreadful nature of writing book reviews that would please even the strictest English teacher at my school. Thanks to my side gig of blogging, I have refined the art of writing book reviews to a large extent. I have now discovered the art of dissecting a book with simplicity and clarity, all while maintaining the element of suspense and avoiding the revelation of spoilers in my reviews.

As K12 students, mastering the art of writing a concise and effective book review is a valuable skill that can significantly contribute to exam success. I thought of sharing this guide where we will break down the process into simple steps, providing practical tips to help students write an impactful book review within the given 300-word limit.

Step 1: Choose the Right Book

Start by selecting a book that not only aligns with your interests but also falls within the scope of your curriculum. Ensure the book is age-appropriate and suits your reading level.

Step 2: Familiarize Yourself with Key Details

Before jumping into the review, gather essential information about the book:

• Name of the book
• Genre (novel)

Step 3: Identify Unique Aspects

Highlight the unique aspects of the book that make it stand out. Is it the writing style, character development, or an unexpected twist in the plot? Jot down these elements to include in your review.

Step 4: Structure Your Review

Organize your review using the following structure:

• Introduction (Approx. 30 words): Briefly introduce the book, including its title, author, publisher, and genre.
• Summary (Approx. 100 words): Provide a concise summary of the plot, characters, and setting, avoiding spoilers.
• Analysis (Approx. 150 words): Share your opinions on the unique aspects identified earlier. Discuss what you liked or disliked, supporting your thoughts with examples from the book.
• Conclusion (Approx. 20 words): Sum up your overall impression of the book and whether you recommend it.

Step 5: Be Concise and Clear

On exam day, focus on clarity and conciseness. Use simple and direct language to convey your thoughts. Avoid unnecessary details that don’t contribute to the overall review.

Step 6: Practice Writing within the Limit

Regularly practice writing book reviews within the 300-word limit. This will help you develop the skill of expressing your thoughts concisely while covering all necessary aspects.

Conclusion:

Mastering the art of writing a book review within 300 words is an invaluable skill not just for exams but also for a variety of exams in future. Practising the art of writing book reviews may take time but it is not impossible. Remember to stay focused, highlight unique aspects, and provide a well-structured analysis to make your review stand out. Good luck!

Pride and Prejudice: Book review.

Story Line:

'Pride and Prejudice' is a romantic novel written by Jane Austen and first published in 1813. The book follows the life of Elizabeth Bennet, a headstrong, intelligent woman. It takes place in the early 1800s and is about the emotional development of the main character.           Elizabeth has four sisters and no brother According to succession rights, none of the girls can inherit the property, and Mrs. Bennet (Elizabeth's mother) thinks that good marriages are the only way for them to lead a good life. Her main ambition in life is to see that her daughters marry wealthy men. However, the novel emphasizes that one should marry for love and not only for money. Mr. Bennet tolerates his wife's behaviour and is dryly sarcastic when she is silly. There are villainous characters like George Wickham and comic ones like Mr. Collins.

Social/Historical Context:  In Pride and Prejudice, the Bennets are members of the educated upper-middle class. At that time, a man's income was always reported as a number of pounds per year'. Mr. Bingley has 'four or five thousand a year' while Darcy's income is a very impressive 10,000 a year. Thus, Darcy is considered to possess a fortune, and hence a very eligible bachelor.            The formal manners of behaviour are obvious in the custom of paying visits and leaving calling cards, the necessity of giving formal introductions, etc. Marriage was considered to be the only acceptable role for any woman, and getting married was high on the list of priorities. The clothes and customs all reflect the time. The French revolution was in progress during the time of the writing of this novel. Though it is difficult to relate to such customs and such priorities today, the novel still holds our interest.

Writing Style: Jane Austen has threshed out her characters well and given good character sketches of all, whether it is the silly, materialistic Mrs. Bennet as the mother or Elizabeth as the strong-willed daughter. Her writing is sharp, with plenty of sarcasm and irony. Many times it is a bit too detailed, but that was the style of writing at that time. She wrote about ordinary people and their ordinary lives in an exceptional way. She recognized the flaws in society, especially as far as marriage is concerned. The opening words of her novel, 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.', are unforgettable and are still quotes.

My Thoughts:  When I first read it, it was out of compulsion: it was a part of our school activity, and I disliked it. 1 was too small to appreciate the undertones. I found too many unnecessary details. However, when I read it a few years later, I had already read many other books based on that time period. Hence, I would appreciate their customs, their dresses, and their way of talking I had also seen a film based on it, and things became clearer. I plan to read it again and see if I can find new meaning in it now.

Ask all your classmates to donate a book to the class. In this way, everyone will have a book of his/her own to read. Read the book in a week or two. After reading it, exchange your book with your classmate. Keep exchanging and reading books for the whole year. Every fortnight gives the book review of the book that you have read recently in the form of a presentation.

ISC Class 12 English Syllabus 2023-24 has been released on the official website cisce.org. The syllabus is divided into two parts: English Language and English Literature. The official syllabus PDF for both English Language and English Literature is common. You can download the syllabus PDF from the link below.

The English Language syllabus focuses on developing students' written and spoken communication skills. The syllabus includes a variety of topics, including composition, directed writing, and grammar. Whereas, the English Literature syllabus focuses on developing students' critical thinking and analytical skills. The syllabus includes a variety of texts, including a Shakespearean play, short stories, and poems.

The papers for the two parts will be conducted separately on two different dates. English Language (Paper 1) is scheduled on February 12, 2024, while, English Literature (Paper 2) will be conducted on February 13. Check ISC Time Table 2024

In addition to the theory papers, students will also be required to complete a project work worth 20 marks. The project work will involve the submission of an original piece of creative writing, such as a short story, poem, play, or screenplay. English project work will be assessed internally by the schools.

Ans. ISC Class 12 English is comparatively tougher than in other boards. Students need regular practice and sufficient time to prepare for the English exam. There are two papers for English. While the language part requires you to focus on grammar and writing skills, for the Literature part, you must focus on reading the prescribed textbooks.

• The introduction should contain an explanation of the question framed, the reason for choosing the text, and the interpretation of the chosen text.
• The main body should be organized and well-structured using appropriate sub-headings.
• The conclusion must contain a comprehensive summary of the points mentioned in the main body.
