Writing for Gen Ed

In order to support undergraduate writers outside of their Expos courses, the Harvard Writing Project works closely with professors and Teaching Fellows teaching courses in the Program in General Education (Gen Ed). Celebrated as the "cornerstone of the Harvard College Curriculum," Gen Ed provides a broad foundation that enables students to make meaningful connections across disciplines.  Harvard Writing Project Guides for Writing in Gen Ed introduce non-specialist students to the modes of argumentation and learning goals for each Gen Ed course.

In collaboration with instructional staff in the concentrations, the Harvard College Writing Program has developed an extensive series of writing guides to help undergraduates write effectively in their concentrations. Writing the Senior Thesis

The senior thesis is typically the most challenging writing project undertaken by undergraduate students. In collaboration with University faculty, the Harvard Writing Project produces guides to writing the senior thesis . The guides build on the elements of analytical argument introduced in Expos , outlining discipline-specific methods and conventions. The guides are designed to support seniors through the writing process while doing original research in their concentration.

What is Already Known

Handbooks  are a stock-in-trade for academic researchers. Typically, they're edited volumes, with chapters written by authorities -- or recognized experts, and they synthesize current "consensus" thinking around a particular topic, the most widely accepted perspectives on a topic  They usually contain extensive bibliographies which you can mine as well.

Current Trends & Questions

Literature reviews  are essays that help you easily understand—and contextualize—the principal contributions that have been made in your field. They not only track trends over time in the scholarly discussions of a topic, but also synthesize and connect related work. They cite the trailblazers and sometimes the outliers, and they even root out errors of fact or concept. Typically, they include a final section that identifies remaining questions or future directions research might take.

Among the databases for finding literature reviews, we recommend you start with:

  • Annual Reviews offers comprehensive collections of critical reviews by leading scholars.
  • Web of Science can be a powerful tool in uncovering literature reviews. A keyword topic search in Web of Science much like HOLLIS, will return results that you can then sift through using a variety of left-side filter categories.  Under document type, look for the review.  

Prioritizing My Reading  

  • Oxford Bibliographies Online combine the best features of the annotated bibliography with an authoritative subject encyclopedia. Entries identify key contributions to a topic, idea, person, or event and indicate the value of the work.

Doing a senior thesis is an exciting enterprise. It’s often the first time students are engaging in truly original research and trying to develop a significant contribution to a field of inquiry. But as joyful as an independent research process can be, you don’t have to go it alone. It’s important to have support as you navigate such a large endeavor, and the ARC is here to offer one of those layers of support. 

Whether or not to write a senior thesis is just the first in a long line of questions thesis writers need to consider. In addition to questions about the topic and scope of your thesis, there are questions about timing, schedule, and support. For example, if you are collecting data, when should data collection start and when should it be completed? What kind of schedule will you write on? How will you work with your adviser? Do you want to meet with your adviser about your progress once a month? Once a week? What other resources can you turn to for information, feedback, and support? 

Even though there is a lot to think about and a lot to do, doing a thesis really can be an enjoyable experience! Keep reminding yourself why you chose this topic and why you care about it. 

Tips for Tackling Big Projects:  

  • When you’re approaching a big project, it can seem overwhelming to look at the whole thing at once, so it’s essential to identify the smaller steps that will move you towards the completed project. 
  • Your advisor is best suited to help you break down the thesis process with field-specific advice. 
  • If you need to refine the breakdown further so it makes sense for you, schedule an appointment with an Academic Coach . An academic coach can help you think through the steps in a way that works for you. 
  • Pre-determine the time, place, and duration. 
  • Keep it short (15 to 60 minutes). 
  • Have a clear and reasonable goal for each writing session. 
  • Make it a regular event (every day, every other day, MWF). 
  • time is not wasted deciding to write if it’s already in your calendar; 
  • keeping sessions short reduces the competition from other tasks that are not getting done; 
  • having an achievable goal for each session provides a sense of accomplishment (a reward for your work); 
  • writing regularly can turn into a productive habit. 
  • In addition to having a clear goal for each writing session, it’s important to have clear goals for each week and to find someone to communicate these goals to, such as your adviser, a “thesis buddy,” your roommate, etc. Communicating your goals and progress to someone else creates a useful sense of accountability. 
  • If your adviser is not the person you are communicating your progress to on a weekly basis, then request to set up a structure with your adviser that requires you to check in at less frequent but regular intervals. 
  • Commit to attending Accountability Hours at the ARC on the same day every week. Making that commitment will add both social support and structure to your week. Use the ARC Scheduler to register for Accountability Hours. 
  • Set up an accountability group in your department or with thesis writers from different departments. 
  • It’s important to have a means for getting consistent feedback on your work and to get that feedback early. Work on large projects often lacks the feeling of completeness, so don’t wait for a whole section (and certainly not the whole thesis) to feel “done” before you get feedback on it! 
  • Your thesis adviser is typically the person best positioned to give you feedback on your research and writing, so communicate with your adviser about how and how often you would like to get feedback. 
  • If your adviser isn’t able to give you feedback with the frequency you’d like, then fill in the gaps by creating a thesis writing group or exploring if there is already a writing group in your department or lab. 
  • The Harvard College Writing Center is a great resource for thesis feedback. Writing Center Senior Thesis Tutors can provide feedback on the structure, argument, and clarity of your writing and help with mapping out your writing plan. Visit the Writing Center website to schedule an appointment with a thesis tutor . 
  • Working on a big project can be anxiety provoking because it’s hard to keep all the pieces in your head and you might feel like you are losing track of your argument. 
  • To reduce this source of anxiety, try keeping a separate document where you jot down ideas on how your research questions or central argument might be clarifying or changing as you research and write. Doing this will enable you to stay focused on the section you are working on and to stop worrying about forgetting the new ideas that are emerging. 
  • You might feel anxious when you realize that you need to update your argument in response to the evidence you have gathered or the new thinking your writing has unleashed. Know that that is OK. Research and writing are iterative processes – new ideas and new ways of thinking are what makes progress possible. 
  • It’s also anxiety provoking to feel like you can’t “see” from the beginning to the end of your project in the way that you are used to with smaller projects. 
  • Breaking down big projects into manageable chunks and mapping out a schedule for working through each chunk is one way to reduce this source of anxiety. It’s reassuring to know you are working towards the end even if you cannot quite see how it will turn out. 
  • It may be that your thesis or dissertation never truly feels “done” to you, but that’s okay. Academic inquiry is an ongoing endeavor. 
  • Thesis work is not a time for social comparison; each project is different and, as a result, each thesis writer is going to work differently. 
  • Just because your roommate wrote 10 pages in a day doesn’t mean that’s the right pace or strategy for you. 
  • If you are having trouble figuring out what works for you, use the ARC Scheduler to make an appointment with an Academic Coach , who can help you come up with daily, weekly, and semester-long plans. 
  • If you’re having trouble finding a source, email your question or set up a research consult via Ask a Librarian . 
  • If you’re looking for additional feedback or help with any aspect of writing, contact the Harvard College Writing Center . The Writing Center has Senior Thesis Tutors who will read drafts of your thesis (more typically, parts of your thesis) in advance and meet with you individually to talk about structure, argument, clear writing, and mapping out your writing plan. 
  • If you need help with breaking down your project or setting up a schedule for the week, the semester, or until the deadline, use the ARC Scheduler to make an appointment with an Academic Coach . 
  • If you would like an accountability structure for social support and to keep yourself on track, come to Accountability Hours at the ARC.

Thesis Statements

What is an argument.

A thesis statement explains to the reader what argument you will make in your paper. While it can be more than one sentence, your thesis should be concise. A good thesis statement should also come as early in a paper as is reasonable, in order to tell the reader what you will argue and how you will argue it. This second part (the “how”) might include:

  • the base of support or evidence for the argument
  • the methodology or framework of interpretation.

In the field of Classics

In Classics, your base of support will most likely be a text, a set of texts, an object, a group of artifacts, an archaeological site, or a combination of these different types of sources. A thesis statement goes beyond superficial stances and summarization to answer the looming question of “so what?” or “why do we care?” A thesis statement takes a stance and makes an argument.

Senior thesis: a daunting and fulfilling journey.

The senior thesis experience is a transformative journey that marks the culmination of an undergraduate academic career. The thesis process requires students to delve into the depths of their chosen field, applying years of accumulated knowledge and skills to produce a substantial piece of original research. 

This capstone project is not merely an academic exercise; it is an opportunity for personal and intellectual growth as students navigate the complexities of research, critical thinking, and self-discovery. While the requirements can vary from department to department, one thing remains the same — it is a challenging undertaking that pushes students to reach new academic limits. 

This journey can be broken down into a few stages, each of which I will break down with my own thesis experience!

The Quest for a Lab:

As a Neurobiology Concentrator, I was not required to write a senior thesis. Therefore, my main goal was to find a lab that met my research interests and provided mentorship opportunities. Thus, I began by reflecting on my academic interests, passions, and long-term goals. While some students may have a clear vision from the start, others embark on a process of exploration, guided by faculty mentors and advisors. For students like me who did not have a clear vision, I sat down with the  Harvard Research Advisor, who helped guide me toward neuroscience labs that had available positions. After that, I took the time to research what had been previously published by these projects to determine if they aligned with my interests. This led me to the Healthy Baby Study (HBS) at the Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience at Boston Children's Hospital. HBS is a clinical project that focuses on how early life experiences can affect long-term child development. I was immediately drawn to this project as I wanted a hands-on experience that allowed me to interact with families.  After going through the interview process, I was lucky enough to be selected for the student position, and I have been working there for over two years. 

Deciding to Write a Thesis: 

Now, if your concentration requires a thesis you don’t have much of a choice in this step, but if you do have a choice it can be an incredibly daunting decision to make. For me, this stage was filled with what-ifs and questioning if I could put together such an extensive research project. Many of these questions were answered after attending the neuroscience department thesis introduction meeting and discussing with my lab. Ultimately, I decided to write the thesis through the help and guidance of my mentors within my lab. While this can seem daunting, I promise that it is possible if you are willing to make that leap! 

Choosing My Topic: 

Again, this step looks very different depending on what you are studying. My friends studying economics for example had a much broader range of topics that they could explore than I did since I was in a lab that focused on a specific section of research. Therefore, it is important to choose a lab with a project that you are interested in, as it will largely impact what options you have to write about in the future. 

I took a deep dive into the research variables that our team collected and sat down with my mentor to brainstorm questions that interested me. This portion of the process took a lot of time and trial and error to narrow down to one question, but eventually, I got there and began to formulate my aims and hypothesis. This critical stage required an extensive exploration of existing literature to identify gaps in knowledge and develop a unique angle that adds value to the academic conversation. My senior thesis was not just about regurgitating information; it was about contributing something new and thought-provoking. This led me to explore the potential relationship between maternal stress, biological markers of stress, and brain development. 

The Research Odyssey:

Armed with a solid hypothesis, I started the research process. In my project, this involved extensive literature reviews and data collection. During this stage, I studied the data that we had collected from the Healthy Baby Study. This data included EEG data, urine samples, and maternal stress surveys.  I needed to gain a solid understanding of my data set and its limitations before I moved forward in the research process. This phase demanded discipline, time management, and resilience as setbacks and challenges were inevitable. The process of analyzing data was both intellectually stimulating and emotionally taxing, requiring a balance between academic rigor and personal well-being. 

The Art of Synthesis:

As the research phase concluded, I faced synthesizing my findings into a coherent and compelling narrative. I began this task by writing my introduction and carefully outlining each of my aims. I knew doing this would provide me with a clear path moving forward. However, it is also common to write out of order, if that best suits the needs of your project. During this stage, the Neuroscience Department supported us by hosting thesis writing workshops that focused on clearly presenting your research. I found d this step to be the most rewarding because it allowed me to put everything I had been working towards together. Although I did my best to space out the writing process, it was almost inevitable to fall behind at some points. Therefore, I found myself writing more some days than others but, eventually, I was able to put together the final product almost a year after I began my first brainstorming session about the project. 

The Trials of Revision:

Drafting the thesis was only the beginning; subsequent rounds of revision were where the project truly took shape. Receiving constructive criticism, revisiting assumptions, and refining arguments were essential steps in honing the final product. I received tremendous support from my lab during this stage. Their expertise gave me a fresh perspective on how to succinctly and clearly present my research. I am extremely grateful for their help as it was critical in refining my writing. 

Celebrating the Culmination:

Upon completion, my senior thesis marked a moment of celebration and reflection. It was a testament to my intellectual and personal growth throughout my academic journey. The Neuroscience Department hosted a Thesis Celebration, and it was truly surreal to walk into that party knowing that we had all just completed such incredible research projects. I was truly honored to get to celebrate with my peers.

Although my thesis is submitted, I will not be done with the process until the presentation and defense of the thesis before faculty members. I thought I would be nervous about this final presentation, but I am more excited than anything. I cannot wait to showcase my expertise, defend my ideas, and engage in scholarly discourse.

While I am not completely done with my thesis process, I hope these reflections can shed some light on the journey. For me, the senior thesis experience was more than an academic choice; it was a journey that equipped me with invaluable skills such as critical thinking, research methodology, and effective communication. Beyond the tangible output, the experience fostered a sense of accomplishment, resilience, and a lifelong appreciation for the pursuit of knowledge. I am incredibly thankful that I completed this journey!
