Seeking Research Assistant in Native & Indigenous Archives and Linked Data College of Information, University of Maryland

I am seeking a paid 20 hour per week Research Assistant to conduct exploratory work at the intersection of the ‘right to know’ ( O’Neal 2015 ), Indigenous data sovereignty ( Carroll et al. 2020 ; Kukutai & Taylor 2016 ), and institutional/colonial archives drawing on linked data platforms.

Students with an interest or embodied knowledge of Indigenous ethics and protocols, archives or heritage collections, Indigenous research methodologies, and linked data tools are especially encouraged to apply.

Primarily, the assistant will advance work being undertaken by the the Linking Anthropology’s Data in Archives (LADA) project, the Council for the Preservation of Anthropological Records (CoPAR) , and the IndigenizeSNAC project, which are taking different approaches to making Indigenous knowledge held in colonial archives findable to community users. In particular, this year these projects are aiming to scale up our work in linked data (primarily Wikidata, but we are open to exploring other platforms), as a tool for representing and linking Indigenous knowledge, both to colonial collectors & holding institutions, and to traditional knowledge owners.

The assistant will also have the opportunity to closely interact with a team of students and College of Information faculty working on a range of archival access and data reuse research projects within the Center for Archival Futures (CAFe). This is a chance to engage in research that develops policies, strategies, and work plans to solve real-world archival challenges.

Primary tasks will include:

• Participating in platform training, including in Wikipedia, Wikidata, and SNAC
• Co-designing, coordinating, and/or promoting ethical principles for US-based Wiki and Indigenous work
• Coordinating community events (e.g. Wikidatathon and/or SNAC edit-a-thon)
• Attending weekly project meetings with the supervisor, monthly CoPAR meetings, and any event planning meetings.

Additional tasks, depending on the skills and interests of the assistant may include:

• Writing up project findings and draft publications, including opportunities for co-authorship
• Presentations or conference work
• Grant writing or other future project work
• Attending CoPAR, SNAC, or other project meetings
• Working with the wider NSF-funded Linking Anthropology’s Data in Archives (LADA) team

Basic Qualifications

• Interest in archival collections, heritage repositories, or information access
• Experience in project management, coordination, collaborative projects, or event planning
• Excellent organizational skills and work ethic
• Experience working with or knowledge of Native American, First Nations, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and/or Indigenous communities

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikimedia, SNAC, Bionomia, or other platforms
• Experience working in project teams collaboratively, with multiple levels of staff, colleagues, and community constituencies
• Familiarity with emergent Indigenous protocols and policies for the GLAM sector or beyond (e.g. the CARE principles)
• Enrolled in a bachelors or graduate degree program at UMD relevant to Indigenous archives, Indigenous studies, or information studies
• Demonstrated commitment to values of openness, diversity, inclusion, innovation, and social justice.

This paid opportunity is $20/hour for Fall 2024 , with possible extension into Spring or Summer 2025; it is being shared on behalf of Dr. Diana Marsh, assistant professor at the College of Information.

If you are a UMD student, please note that a student assistant will be paid on an hourly basis and there is no tuition remission associated with the assistantship. The assistant must commit to working 20 hours per week during the academic term. We hope this will be a hybrid in-person and remote-work position, but remote work exclusively is possible.

Job summary.

**THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN FLINT, MICHIGAN**

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a part-time research assistant to work on research studies investigating mobile health technology and addressing health disparities around stroke and stroke prevention in a collaborative and diverse team. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, enjoy interacting with a diverse group of research participants, and be capable of working both independently and in close collaboration with team members and investigators.

This position will be primarily responsible for screening subjects for eligibility, performing in-person consent and enrollment visits, and outcome visits. Recruitment would take place in a busy emergency department in Flint, MI, (Hurley Medical Center) it is important you are comfortable in that setting. Although in-depth experience with technology is not required, a basic comfort level will be important.

Responsibilities*

• Assist study teams with all aspects of clinical trial coordination including: identifying potential subjects, screening subjects, consenting and enrolling subjects, and collecting patient surveys and blood pressures (using automated blood pressure cuff).
• Schedule study visit appointments.
• Perform phone calls to patients for technology trouble-shooting and follow-up.
• Scheduling outcome assessments (possibly in community centers, libraries, or homes, in which case research assistants may go in pairs)
• Enter subjects' research data into an electronic data entry system.
• Assist with organization and storage of research data.
• Track subjects and maintain accurate and detailed study records.
• Perform data management and quality control.
• Assist in generating weekly recruitment reports for the study.
• Troubleshoot basic participant device issues.

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor's degree (or current student).
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in both verbal and written form.
• Ability to communicate clearly over the phone and through video conferencing.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize.
• Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Desired Qualifications*

• Human Subjects Research Experience
• Experience using Epic and Redcap.
• Experience with video conferencing software such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, etc.
• Familiarity with Flint

Work Schedule

This position is anticipated to be for 8-20 hours per week. This position could involve evenings and weekends to accommodate recruitment and/or outcome visits.

Your work schedule in this position is a bit flexible. We are open to variability in hours.

Modes of Work

Background Screening
