Graduate research scholarships

The University of Melbourne offers generous and comprehensive scholarship opportunities to recognise talent and support graduate researchers.

Graduate researchers who have applied for a graduate research degree are automatically considered for a range of scholarships, however some other scholarships require a standalone application.

If you currently hold a research scholarship awarded by another higher education provider, and you wish to commence or resume a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, you will need to apply for admission and be considered again for a research scholarship.

Find the right scholarship for you

The University also administers Research Training Program Scholarships on behalf of the Australian Government. For more information, see: Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship policy

Applications for COVID-19 stipend extensions are now open to candidates whose stipend expires up to 30 June 2023. Visit the COVID-19 scholarship extensions page for further information and the application form.

Research scholarships may provide a stipend, specific allowance or tuition fee remission or offset.

Scholarship benefits can only be activated if you have accepted your scholarship offer, commenced your course, updated your bank details and met the conditions of your scholarship as specified in your scholarship offer.

For more information, see: Graduate research scholarship terms and conditions

Scholarships that provide a one-off payment, quarterly payments or a stipend are paid every fortnight via the University’s Payroll, and will appear as a University of Melbourne Salary on your bank statement.

For more information, see scholarship payment dates .

Fee remissions

Domestic graduate researchers who are offered a masters degree by research or doctoral degree will be enrolled in a fee exempt place and receive a Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to acknowledge the contribution from the Australian Government towards the cost of their tuition.

Please note tuition fee remission scholarships do not cover the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). If the SSAF appears on your Statement of Liability, you are required to pay it.

International graduate researchers who receive a scholarship that provides a partial or full fee remission will have their remission activated after accepting their course and scholarship offer, and before they are due to commence their course. If you do receive an invoice, please contact Stop 1 .

Overseas Student Health Cover

Some scholarships for international graduate researchers who require a student visa to study in Australia will provide Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). If the University arranges OSHC on your behalf, the membership cost is automatically covered.

Acknowledging funding

All financial support for your research, including Australian Government stipend and fee remissions, should be acknowledged in your thesis and other publications.

Providing your bank and address details

To receive scholarship payments, you will need to provide us with the details of your Australian bank account and address via my.unimelb. You can update or check your details after you have accepted your scholarship offer, or if you are currently located outside Australia and do not have an Australian bank account, you can wait until you arrive in Melbourne and activated your bank account.

Scholarship payments can only be made to an Australian bank account (BSB code and account number) Most  Authorised Deposit-taking Institution registered with the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority are banks that require you to confirm your identity in person at one of their branches in Australia before you can transact on your account. Others provide online money transfer services (‘purchased payment facilities’), for example Wise (TransferWise), that allow you to create a currency account with a BSB code and account number online without needing to be present in Australia. Research your options before deciding on setting up a bank account. To check and update your bank details:

  • Log on to my.unimelb
  • Click on Student admin at the top of the page  and go to Financial Support
  • Select View and update my bank account details
  • Click Update
  • Click Enter and save your bank details

If Step 3 sends you to Personal Details,  click on  Awards and Achievements at the top of the page, then on  Payment on the left side bar to access Payment Details.

Please note:

  • You will need the name and six-digit BSB number of your bank. If you do not know your BSB, contact your bank.
  • The BSB and account number should only contain numbers. Do not include dashes, letters or spaces - this will cause an error which stops us processing your payment.

If you are outside Australia and unable to open and activate an Australian bank account, you may consider deferring the commencement of your course and scholarship until you are able to open and activate an Australian bank account. Otherwise, the University will hold payments until you have arrived in Australia and open an Australian bank account.

For information on how to check or update your address details, see how do I update my contact details? Make sure the name of your suburb is spelt correctly and your postcode and suburb match. If you are not sure, check the  Australia Post Find a Postcode website.

Payments may be delayed if we do not have your bank details or if the details you provided are incorrect.

Centrelink benefits

Most scholarships provided by the University of Melbourne are equity or merit-based scholarships. Payments from these scholarships are exempt from the Centrelink income test as long as they are less than the payment threshold . Any scholarship amounts over the threshold may affect your Centrelink payment rate.

Commonwealth scholarships, or scholarships that provide a tuition fee remission or exemption, are not considered income for Centrelink purposes.

For further information, please refer to the Services Australia website .

Notifying Centrelink about your scholarship

If you have applied for or are receiving Centrelink benefits, you are obliged to notify Centrelink of any scholarships you have received. We will not do this on your behalf.

If you are asked for a scholarship reference number, you can fill the field with your student ID number.

If you are asked for evidence of your scholarship(s), you can request one by submitting an online enquiry . This scholarship statement will include the details of your current (active) scholarships.

Scholarship payments are normally exempt from income tax, as long as:

  • You are enrolled full-time
  • The scholarship is provided for educational purposes, and not as part of an employment agreement.

If you are enrolled part-time, the University will withhold income tax from your scholarship payments to avoid the accumulation of a tax debt. You will be asked to provide a Tax File Number Declaration with your instructions on the treatment of the tax-free threshold, and at the end of each financial year you will be able to access your  income statement via myGov to use for your Tax Return. We recommend you seek independent tax advice to ensure that your individual circumstances are covered.

For more information, see:

  • Australian Taxation Office: Is my scholarship taxable?
  • Tax Help program

Concurrent scholarships or awards

Recipients of a Graduate Research Scholarship are permitted to receive a concurrent award, scholarship or salary in relation to their course of study, provided the concurrent awards, scholarship or salary is less than 75% of the annual value of the living allowance.

For further information, please refer to the  Graduate Research Scholarship terms and conditions .

If you wish to accept an award, scholarship or salary that is equivalent to or greater in value than the Graduate Research Scholarship, you can apply for leave from your Graduate Research Scholarship.

To apply for leave from your scholarship:

  • Log into my.unimelb .
  • Go to the 'Student admin' tab
  • Scroll down to the 'Financial support' heading and select the 'Go to financial support' link
  • Under the 'Scholarships' heading, click on 'Apply for scholarship leave or extension'.

For example:

  • Taking leave
  • Changing your study rate
  • Withdrawing from your research degree
  • Submitting your thesis .

Your scholarship offer lists the terms and conditions of your scholarship, such as the graduate research scholarship terms and conditions . If you have any questions, contact Stop 1 .

Scholarships

Scholarships

There are a range of government and University funded scholarships available to support you during your Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidature. These scholarships provide support with a range of expenses associated with undertaking HDR research including living expenses, tuition waivers, and ancillary costs associated with your research.

HDR scholarships can include one or more of the following types of support*:

  • Stipend – this is a living allowance paid to the student fortnightly for the duration of the scholarship to help with living expenses. Please be aware that stipends are intended to contribute towards living expenses for the student themselves and may not be sufficient to fully cover the cost of living, particularly if accompanied by dependents.
  • Fee Offset/Waiver – this pays tuition fees that would otherwise be paid by the student for the duration of the scholarship. Note: this is a financial arrangement within the university and is not paid to the student.
  • Allowances – reimbursement for costs associated with undertaking HDR research such as relocation costs, and Overseas Health Cover.

* NOTE:    If you are successful in obtaining a scholarship, your offer letter will provide details of which, if any, of these types of support you have been awarded.

Finding Information about HDR Scholarships on Offer

Information about all of the HDR Scholarships on offer can be found in the University Scholarships Database . The database includes scholarship opportunities for future, current and past students, such as external funding opportunities and travel scholarships.

Entries in the database include information about the background of the award, what is included, eligibility criteria, and how to apply for the award.

The database is updated on a continuous basis as awards become available. If you are seeking a scholarship, you should check the database regularly so that you do not miss an opportunity.

Applying for HDR Scholarships - Opportunities in the Competitive Rounds

Scholarships are mainly awarded in competitive rounds that align with the primary intakes of students at the start of the year and mid-way through the year. These rounds are known as the Major Round (February/March intake) and the Midyear Round (July/August intake).

Separate Major and Midyear rounds are held for domestic and international applicants. This ensures that successful international applicants have sufficient time to make the arrangements to move to Australia while also providing sufficient time for domestic students to complete any current programs before the round is held.

Scholarships Available in the Competitive Rounds

Two principal types of major scholarships are offered in the competitive scholarship rounds: Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships and University of Adelaide Research Scholarships . Whether these scholarships are offered in a specific scholarship round is subject to the availability of scholarships at that time. The scholarship round information tables ( see Domestic Round , International Round below) identify which scholarships will be offered in a specific round.

  • Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarships ( Domestic , International )
  • University of Adelaide Research Scholarships ( Domestic , International )
  • Applicants who do not hold an Honours degree, postgraduate qualifications with a significant research component, or have significant research experience and/or publications will be considered for the University of Adelaide Research Scholarship s ( Domestic , International )

Further information about eligibility for these principal scholarships is included in the Conditions of Award .

A range of other scholarships may also be offered during the competitive scholarship rounds, as permitted by funding availability. Information about any additional awards being offered during a specific scholarship round are provided in the online application system . It is recommended that applicants carefully consider the information provided about these scholarships when they complete their application, as applicants may also be eligible for these additional awards.

Domestic Round

The domestic rounds include both domestic applicants and international applicants who are current students or recent graduates of the University of Adelaide. A student is considered a 'recent graduate' if they have completed their University of Adelaide qualification within the last 2 years (4 semesters).

Scholarship Selection Guidelines for the Competitive Rounds

The number of scholarships on offer in each competitive scholarship round is subject to funding availability and these scholarships are awarded based on merit. Scholarship applications are assessed based on a combination of academic merit, research experience, and alignment with the University of Adelaide’s strategic goals.  To provide yourself with the best chance at being selected for a scholarship, ensure that you include as much detail as possible in your application about:

  • your qualifications
  • your grades
  • your publications, and
  • your research relevant work experience

If you have previously studied overseas, your qualifications from any overseas institutions will be assessed in comparison to the Australian Quality Framework (AQF). If your grades do not compare with the Australian system, your results will be scaled accordingly to ensure that your application can be assessed fairly.

If you are currently enrolled as an HDR student, please note that in assessing your application consideration will only be given to work completed prior to your current HDR.

Scholarship applications from applicants who have completed a Bachelor degree and no postgraduate qualifications will be assessed using the cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) from their undergraduate program.

Scholarships are awarded to the highest ranked applicants in the round. Whether an applicant is awarded a scholarship is determined by the quality of their application relative to the other applications in the round.

NOTE: If you are currently enrolled as an HDR student, consideration will only be given to work completed prior to your current HDR.

Applying for HDR Scholarships - Out of Round Opportunities

In addition to the competitive scholarship rounds there are other opportunities which include externally funded major awards, supplementary scholarships, industry programs and placements, allowances for operating costs, and travel scholarships. These scholarships are listed online in the University Scholarships Database . They usually require a separate and specific application and you will find this information attached to the funding opportunity listed.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

You will need to complete an online admission and scholarship application. You can find the page to apply here . Please select at the top of the page if you are applying as a domestic or international student, and the page will show you the dates for each scholarship round currently available. Work your way down the steps, read each section and you will be directed how to apply online.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship in the competitive rounds?

Yes, you can apply for as many scholarships as you would like (and are eligible for). However, please be aware that if you are successful, whether you can hold multiple scholarships is determined by the rules of award for the individual scholarship.

Where do I find a supervisor?

For information on how to connect with a supervisor, please see Step 3 of How to Apply .

I am currently completing a Master of Philosophy, and wish to apply for PhD admission & scholarship in the competitive round. What is the deadline to submit my thesis?  Domestic and onshore international applicants completing a Higher Degree by Research qualification in the same semester of application at an Australian university (University of Adelaide only for international students) will only be eligible for consideration if they have submitted their thesis for examination by the scholarship closing date. Note: examination results must be provided within 3 months of the scholarship closing date.

Will the publications and/or research experience I have gained since completing my qualification(s) add weight to my application? If you ensure that your publication(s) and/or relevant research experience is detailed in your application and uploaded Structured CV, it will be considered. However, the Graduate Scholarships Committee will pay close attention to the quality of the journal in which the work is published as well as your contribution to the publication. Research outputs are usually assessed in light of the opportunities you might have had subsequent to your initial graduation.

My previous scholarship application was unsuccessful.  Can I reapply for a scholarship?

If you have not yet enrolled in your academic program, yes you can reapply for a scholarship. If you have previously applied for admission and a scholarship, and were unsuccessful, you can reapply in any subsequent round.

If you have already enrolled in your academic program, please see the question below.

I have enrolled in my academic program.  Can I apply / reapply for scholarships?

Yes. If you are currently enrolled in an HDR and have sufficient candidature left, you can apply for scholarships.

  • For a Masters scholarship, you must have a minimum of 6 months candidature remaining as of 1 January (Major Round) or 1 July (Midyear Round) to be eligible to apply for a scholarship.

Please note: Only the work completed prior to your enrolment in the HDR study for which the scholarship is being sought will be considered in assessing your application.

Are there any opportunities for industry placements?

Incorporating industry engagement into your HDR program provides unique opportunities and a strong complement to your academic studies and will give you a head start in future employment opportunities.

More information about these opportunities can be found here: https://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/career-development/industry-opportunities

Can I apply for a tuition fee waiver?

The University of Adelaide does not offer tuition fee waiver only scholarships. Tuition fee waivers are associated with major scholarships awarded to students. Please apply in a scholarship round to be considered for a scholarship. If you are successful, a fee waiver will be included as part of your scholarship offer.

When will I know the result of my scholarship application?

Domestic applicants

We will begin releasing outcomes from the date listed for the relevant competitive scholarship round on the website . You will be notified of the outcome of your scholarship application at the same time that you are notified whether you have been successful in your application for admission (i.e. in the same correspondence).

Your scholarship outcome will not be released until all of your academic results have been finalised (and you have provided appropriate evidence to the Adelaide Graduate Research School), and all aspects of your admission application have been approved.

International applicants

We will begin releasing outcomes from the date listed for the relevant competitive scholarship round on the website . You will be notified of the outcome of your scholarship application separately from your admission outcome notification.

There may be compliance checks and other relevant approval processes that need to be completed before a scholarship outcome can be determined.  You will be advised of the outcome of your application as soon as a decision is made.

Drafting and Submitting Your Application

There are a number of stages that are required in order to prepare and submit your application, a checklist for this process may be found  here (DOCX 23.0 KB) .

The first task is to formulate a research topic and project which is relevant to Aboriginal communities and is appropriately sized to the selected program (PhD or MRes, for the difference please see  here ). Within this stage it is important to both align your research topic to a relevant discipline (e.g. sociology or history), consider which methods and methodology to be adopted (e.g. surveys, quantitative or qualitative) and ensure it is achievable within the time allotted time period (not too large or small).

We advise speaking with the HDR Support Person from the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Aboriginal Leadership (see below for contact details) or an academic known to you who may be able to assist you in this regard.

For the application process itself, there this an initial expression of interest to submit and, if this is approved, you may then prepare your research proposal and application (see  Apply Now ). The research proposal is a short two-page pitch for your project, outlining why it is important, how it will be undertaken and what it will seek to achieve. A set of resources are provided below to assist you to complete your proposal, including some proposals for research completed by Aboriginal researchers at the University of Tasmania. For further information, we recommend  Social Research Methods edited by Distinguished Professor Maggie Walter.

After submitting your application for candidature, please contact  [email protected] with your name, application ID number and the name of the scholarship you have applied for.

Honouring the late Mr Glazebrook’s wishes, who was a passionate advocate for conserving Tasmania’s natural environment, the University is to apply this bequest to provide a scholarship to students undertaking a Masters by Research, or PhD on:

  • Threats and remedies related to negative environmental impacts on Tasmania’s natural environment (past, present and future, terrestrial and aquatic) from human activities ; and/or,
  • Research to ensure Aboriginal environmental justice occurs so that indigenous acceptance is a prerequisite for proposed developments in the natural environment.

Successful project(s) should ideally focus on:

  • The negative environmental impacts of changes to Tasmania’s natural environment from human activities, particularly towards threatened flora/fauna, and develop remedies using science–based evidence to firstly measure risks and then by research, deliver solutions to abate or eliminate such risks; and/or,
  • Increase Aboriginal well-being by implementing Aboriginal environmental justice practices on issues related to their land and sea regions through consultation with relevant Aboriginal representatives.

This Scholarship is a top-up scholarship that provides $10,000pa for 3.5 years

  • A MRes or PhD applicant, or current candidate who has been offered or awarded a base stipend at the University rate; and,
  • Conservation and protection of Tasmania’s important natural assets, particularly threatened species, including current status studies and research of impact assessments (actual and potential) on ecosystems and related remedies to human interference (for example directly such as logging, or indirectly such as global warming).
  • Raising awareness, acceptance and delivery of solutions for injustices suffered by Tasmania’s Aboriginal people through European colonisation, with a focus on environmental justice and connection to land and sea thereby adding to the goal of increased wellbeing into the future. This may also include the cultural impacts from invasive species.

Applicants who wish to apply for the Scholarship, in addition to a PhD and a base living allowance stipend, should visit the University of Tasmania’s Apply Now website and complete an application. At the end of the application, within the Comment field, please advise that you are also applying for the Richard Ernest Glazebrook Environment Scholarship.

For current PhD candidates at the University of Tasmania, who have been offered or awarded a living allowance base stipend, please complete and submit the Donor-Funded Scholarship Application for Current Candidate to [email protected] .

Applications will be assessed on how the project addresses environmental science and justice problems and the capacity to deliver proposed project outcomes to these problems. Financial and/or educational disadvantage may also be considered.

Some examples of ideal research topics include:

  • The conservation of Tasmania’s important natural assets such as high-conservation forests including old-growth and rainforests and how this will help threatened species through protection of habitat.
  • Conserving threatened and endangered flora and fauna such as eagles, Swift parrots, Masked Owls and albatrosses by helping to minimize the impact of human interference on important ecosystems such as impacts from native forest logging, wind farms, overfishing and climate change
  • Stopping mining in high conservation areas or with significant environmental values by measuring these values for application by decision makers and stake holders before approvals processes
  • Impacts on marine ecosystems and threatened species from Atlantic salmon farming in sheltered waters such as bays and inlets
  • Impacts on threatened species from wind farms proposed in inappropriate places such as migratory and foraging flyways, wetlands, and those places known to support and protect these species.
