UoH Ph.D. Exam Pattern
The written test will consist of only Multiple Choice Questions. 50% of questions shall be from Research Methodology and the other 50% on the concerned subject. The paper is divided into two parts Part-A and Part-B. The following is proposed for the Ph.d. Entrance examination.
PART-A (Research Methodology)
The process is used to collect information and data to make decisions. The methodology may include publication research, interviews, surveys, and other research techniques, and could include both present and historical information”. Questions may also include those on Quantitative methods, Data interpretation, Aptitude, and Logical Reasoning.
PART-B ( COMPUTER SCIENCE)
Part-B will be on the subject concerned. Negative marking in the whole Question paper or for any Part shall be the choice of the School/ Department/ Centre.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics currently offers three highly rated programmes:
1. Integrated M.Sc. (Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics)
2. M.Sc (Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics)
3. Ph.D. (Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics)
Admissions to I.M.Sc.,M.Sc., Ph.D. programmes are based on the entrance examination and interview conducted by the University. The duration of the written test for all courses will be two hours.

Our programmes lay emphasis on current developments in mathematical sciences including those in interdisciplinary areas. Every year at least 3 to 4 students from the Department secure ranks in the top 10 ranks in the GATE. In the last 5 years, more than 50 students have qualified for the CSIR-UGC Junior Research Fellowship/NET. Most of these students join the Ph.D. programme either at our University or at institutions like TIFR, CMI, IMSc, ISI’s and IIT’s. The Department runs a very successful and rigorous Ph.D. programme. In the last 20 years all our Ph.D. students have held CSIR-UGC/NBHM fellowships.
All students joining the University of Hyderabad are given financial support for the duration of their course provided they pass all their courses. Please see the University site for more information.

Admission to the University is open to all who fulfill the prescribed qualifications without any distinction of race, caste, creed, language or sex. The selection is made strictly on the basis of merit at the entrance examination and interview.
No student shall be eligible for admission to the M.Sc. course unless she/he has successfully completed a three year Undergraduate Degree through an examination conducted by a University/ Autonomous College. However, as a transitory measure, a candidate who has passed a two year degree course may also be considered for admission provided she/he has undergone a further one year bridge course and passed the same.
Candidates whose result of the qualifying degree/ other examination is not declared may also apply for admission. But they may have to produce the results of the qualifying degree to the University within a time specified by the University. (See the University Prospectus for exact details)
All courses at the Master’s Degree level, 5-Year Integrated Master’s Degree, Ph.D. are full time regular courses.
For Ph.D. programmes, the candidates are encouraged to join as regular students. However, for those who are not in a position to do research on full time basis, a limited provision exists for part time.
A candidate is free to apply for admission to as many courses as she/he wishes after ensuring from the schedule for the Entrance examination that there is no clash in the subjects of her/his choice. The University has made the best possible efforts to avoid overlap in the schedule of examinations of related subjects. The candidates are advised to study the examination schedule carefully before deciding on their choice of subjects.
Admission notification to Integrated M.Sc. / MSc / PhD courses will be issued normally in the first week of April. The students are selected through a nation-wide entrance test + interview. Admission to phd courses.
The School offers PhD course in various areas of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research. The advertisement for admission appears in national newspapers.
The UGC-CSIR JRF qualified candidates or NBHM research awardees may be considered for admission any time during the year depending upon the availability of seats. The selection in such cases will be based on an interview.
Eligibility
For applying for the Ph.D. Courses, a candidate should satisfy the following criterion:
Second class Masters degree in concerned or related subjects with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade.
The selection is through interview. The interview carries 25 marks.
For the Ph.D. programme in Statistics the questions will be at the level of M.Sc. in the areas: Probability theory, Statistical Inference, Sampling techniques, Stochastic Processes, Linear Models, Design & Analysis of experiments, Multivariate analysis, Linear Programming.
For joining the Ph.D. programme in Operations Research, a person may appear for the admission test either in Pure/Applied Mathematics or Statistics
Note that candidates only with NET (without JRF) MUST attend the written test.

Students admitted to the Ph.D. programme are required to pass a few courses recommended by the School in the first year and have to face a comprehensive viva at the end of the 1st year. Only those candidates who qualify in the viva are eligible to continue their registration in the Ph.D programme of the School. They are also expected to take part in the weekly Colloquium / Seminar of the School.

Please refer to appropriate section in the prospectus about UGC Regulations 2016. Admission will be through a written test followed by an interview. The candidates who have been awarded JRF Fellowship after writing a National-level written test will be exempted from writing written test of the University and will be directly called for the Interview.
The written test will consist of only objective type questions. 50% of questions shall be from Research Methodology and the other 50% shall pertain to the concerned subject. The paper shall have two parts, Part A and Part B. The following syllabus is proposed for the PhD entrance examination.
- Quantitative Methods: Data preprocessing, graph plotting, plotting functions and data, statistical data analysis.
- Research: Technical Comprehension, Meaning, characteristics and types of research; Steps of research; Methods of research; Research Ethics.
- Aptitude and Reasoning: Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation.
- Computer Applications: Flow Charts, Problem Solving.
- Computer Organization, Computer Programming, Discrete Mathematics, Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, Graph Theory, Computer Networks, and Automata.
The written test is for a total of 80 marks and both Part A (40 questions) and Part B (40 questions) will have equal weightages.
Interview Process:
The number of candidates called for interview is six times the available seats. Candidates must indicate their research interest at the time of the interview. All candidates must come prepared with a tentative research plan write-up of maximum size of 4 pages and are encouraged to submit details of research papers/technical reports if any, they have authored. .
Foreign Candidates:
- Students residing in India and who have taken prior qualifying education in India have to appear for the interview with all required supporting documents.
- Both GRE and TOFEL/ELTS scores are to be submitted at the time of admission. Please also read section on Admission onf Foreign Nationals in the Prospectus.
- GATE qualified M.Tech Computer Science students with 8.5 CPI or equivalent can opt for an exemption of written test and the GATE score will be scaled to 75% in lieu of written test marks.
- UoH fellowship for @ Rs. 8000/-p.m. for a period of 3 years (funded by UGC). This is extendable by one more year in exceptional cases with specific and tangible justification from the Supervisor/Doctoral committee.
- Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme of MHRD: Fellowship of Rs 31,500 p.m. (I&II Yr); Rs 35,000 p.m. (III - V Yr) w.e.f. from 1st September 2015.There are other benefits like: Contingency, ROR etc.
- AICTE Minor QIP Centre:The candidates admitted for the regular Ph.D. degree programme under QIP will receive a sum of Rs. 15,000 per month upto 3 years as Living Expenditure allowance and a contingency grant of Rs.15, 000 per annum for three years.
- IDRBT Fellowship will carry monthly stipend of Rs.25,000 (for 1st and 2nd year) and Rs.28,000 (for 3rd, 4th and 5th years), subject to revision from time to time. There are other benefits like contingency, travel etc.
- Zen Fellowship is Rs. 20,000/- per month, Rs.22,500/- per month, Rs.25,000/- per month, Rs 27,500/- per month, and Rs 30,000/- per month during the first, second, third, fourth and fifth year respectively
- UGC JRF fellowship of Rs. 25,000/- p.m. for the first two years (JRF) and Rs.28,000/- p.m. for the subsequent years (SRF) subject to approval of up gradation by the UGC. Maximum period is 5 years

The value of fellowship is Rs. 25,000/- p.m. for the first two years (JRF) and the value of fellowship is Rs. 28,000/- p.m. for the subsequent years (SRF) subject to approval of up gradation by the UGC.

The Ph.D program at TIFR Hyderabad aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach toward answering scientific question. The department-less structure, an open-lab culture, a flexible course selection and the freedom to join any lab in the institute, combined with world-class facilities and cutting-edge research, creates a stimulating research environment and enables students to pursue interdisciplinary research. Students are admitted through either of the following three subject boards: Physics-oriented, Chemistry-oriented, or Biology-oriented. The choice of the subject board depends on the student’s previous degree and his/her research interests.
Eligibility criteria
The eligibility criteria for the Ph.D and integrated M.Sc–Ph.D programmes under the Physics-oriented, Chemistry-oriented, and Biology-oriented subject boards are listed below.

- Coursework must be completed within a maximum period of 3 years as per the respective subject board guidelines.
- The student must register for a Ph.D at the end of 3 years.
- Requirements for their M.Sc degree must be completed by the end of 3 years as per the respective subject board guidelines. This will be awarded along with the Ph.D degree at the end of their programme term.
- A residency period of 1 year for M.Sc and 2 years for Ph.D after joining TIFRH is mandatory for submitting the thesis.
- Timely disbursement of monthly scholarship: ₹21,000/-; ₹37,000/- from second year (enhanced to ₹42,000/- after registration for Ph.D)
- Annual contingency grant: ₹25,000/- (enhanced to ₹40,000/- from second year onwards)
