The PhD Program is integral to the research of MIT Sloan's world-class faculty. With a reputation as risk-takers who are unafraid to embrace the unconventional, they are engaged in exciting disciplinary and interdisciplinary research that often includes PhD students as key team members.

Research centers across MIT Sloan and MIT provide a rich setting for collaboration and exploration. In addition to exposure to the faculty, PhD students also learn from one another in a creative, supportive research community.

Throughout MIT Sloan's history, our professors have devised theories and fields of study that have had a profound impact on management theory and practice.

From Douglas McGregor's Theory X/Theory Y distinction to Nobel-recognized breakthroughs in finance by Franco Modigliani and in option pricing by Robert Merton and Myron Scholes, MIT Sloan's faculty have been unmatched innovators.

This legacy of innovative thinking and dedication to research impacts every faculty member and filters down to the students who work beside them.

“MIT Sloan PhD training is a transformative experience. The heart of the process is the student’s transition from being a consumer of knowledge to being a producer of knowledge. This involves learning to ask precise, tractable questions and addressing them with creativity and rigor. Hard work is required, but the reward is the incomparable exhilaration one feels from having solved a puzzle that had bedeviled the sharpest minds in the world!” -Ezra Zuckerman Sivan Alvin J. Department of Management and Entrepreneurship

Select Section

PhD program

The Department of Management and Entrepreneurship offers students the opportunity to obtain a PhD in business administration with a concentration in management. Although management is a broad field, our doctoral program is best suited for students interested in specializing in organizational behavior, and/or strategic management — refer to the PhD manual for specific information about all aspects of the program.

The mission of the PhD program is to develop and prepare scholars to assume the diverse responsibilities of positions at leading research universities. The program places primary emphasis on the development of research competence and also emphasizes teaching as a vehicle to academic professionalism. As such, the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship is unable to fully serve the interests of students who do not intend to pursue research careers in the academic community.

Research focus

Doctoral students in our program are encouraged to design an individually meaningful course of study within the larger context of our field. Opportunities for doing this are available through coursework, research with faculty members, and independent research and study. PhD students select a series of modules in organizational behavior, organizational theory, and strategic management — learn more about PhD academics and specializations .

Full-time commitment

We require our PhD students to commit full-time attention to our program at least until they have passed the comprehensive exam and successfully defended the dissertation proposal. Full-time enrollment in the doctoral program is necessary to develop the skills and values for effective scholarship. Consult the PhD manual for additional details regarding full-time enrollment and related requirements.

Faculty collaboration and mentorship

Our program is relatively small, with an emphasis on high quality, which allows faculty members to effectively mentor and provide a great deal of individual attention to each of our students. Students develop additional focus and expertise through collaboration on major papers with individual faculty members. Doctoral students typically have one or more publications prior to graduation.

Doctoral students generally learn research and teaching skills best by serving as apprentices to experienced scholars. Thus, an integral part of doctoral education is employment as a graduate assistant. Students work closely with faculty members both independently and as a part of their assistantship. Refer to page 8 of the PhD manual for additional information regarding graduate assistantships.

PhD Student in Energy Systems for a Project on the Role of Hydrogen in Sweden's Energy System

We are currently seeking a PhD student for the interdisciplinary project "The Role of Hydrogen in Sweden's Energy System: A Historical and Future Analysis of Technology, Market, Norms, and Political Dimensions (VäteROSEN)". The project is part of the national Graduate School in Energy Systems (read more here at foes.se ).

Your work assignments

The research project you will be working on aims to analyze the role of hydrogen in Sweden's energy system, with a focus on both historical and contemporary conditions. The goal is to increase knowledge about the technical and societal conditions, risks, and opportunities of hydrogen. You will collaborate closely with a doctoral student with a social science background at Chalmers. Drawing from your previous educational backgrounds, you will work together to highlight various aspects of the role and integration of hydrogen, with support and expertise provided by your doctoral supervisors and research colleagues. Additionally, you will collaborate and have the opportunity to build your own network within the framework of the Graduate School in Energy Systems’ courses and meetings (e.g. doctoral meetings).

The research aims to provide decision-making support for companies, municipalities, and the national parliament, with an emphasis on collaboration with external stakeholders such as industry organizations and companies. The project offers interesting cases and contexts to study, with potential examples including hydrogen in agriculture, the transport sector, the energy sector, and industry. As a doctoral student, you will have the opportunity, with the support of your supervisors, to design your dissertation work within the framework of the project's research agenda.

The doctoral position is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency through the Graduate School in Energy Systems program. As part of the position, you will participate in the activities of the Graduate School in Energy Systems, where you will also complete a joint course package of approximately 30 credits (read more at foes.se ).

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in an engineering program or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in a relevant subject area. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

The ability to write and communicate in English is a requirement. Of merit for the position is if you also have skills in spoken and written Swedish. The work will be conducted in collaboration with other researchers and doctoral students, so the ability to work well with others is important.

Previous experience in energy or environmental systems analysis, techno-economic studies, and statistical methods is considered an advantage.

Your workplace

The Division of Energy Systems is one of the leading research and educational organizations in its field, conducting research in two thematic areas: Sustainable Built Environment and Industrial Energy Systems. The research is carried out in close collaboration with industry and society, as well as with our national and international networks of researchers. Both education and research are largely multidisciplinary and are conducted in close cooperation with other academic institutions, industry, and public administration. Read more at Energy Systems .

Finding a Doctoral Position

How do i find a place as a doctoral student.

Unlike at many other universities, the doctorate at ETH Zurich is not organised via an overarching doctoral school. ETH Zurich mainly offers individual doctorates. Each potential doctoral thesis supervisor recruits their doctoral students themselves. In order to be able to complete a doctorate at ETH, a professor at ETH must be willing to supervise your dissertation. With few exceptions, doctorates are linked to a position at ETH or within the ETH-domain. The best way to apply for a doctoral position is to contact the professorship you are interested in directly. To do so, visit the website of the department where you would like to do your doctorate and contact the professors you are considering directly.

User-initiated data transfer

If you need to perform a data transfer that may take a long time, you can create a JobScheduler job and identify it as a user-initiated data transfer (UIDT) job. UIDT jobs are intended for longer-duration data transfers that are initiated by the device user, such as downloading a file from a remote server. UIDT jobs were introduced with Android 14 (API level 34).

User-initiated data transfer jobs are started by the user. These jobs require a notification, start immediately, and may be able to run for an extended period of time as system conditions allow. You can run several user-initiated data transfer jobs concurrently.

User initiated jobs must be scheduled while the application is visible to the user (or in one of the allowed conditions ). After all constraints are met, user initiated jobs can be executed by the OS, subject to system health restrictions. The system may also use the provided estimated payload size to determine how long the job executes.

Schedule user-initiated data transfer jobs

To run a user initiated data-transfer job, do the following:

Make sure your app has declared the JobService and associated permissions in its manifest:

Also, define a concrete subclass of JobService for your data transfer:

Declare the RUN_USER_INITIATED_JOBS permission in the manifest:

Call the setUserInitiated() method when building a JobInfo object. (This method is available beginning with Android 14.) We also recommend that you offer a payload size estimate by calling setEstimatedNetworkBytes() while creating your job.

While the job is being executed, call setNotification() on the JobService object. Calling setNotification() makes the user aware that the job is running, both in the Task Manager and in the status bar notification area.

When execution is complete, call jobFinished() to signal to the system that the job is complete, or that the job should be rescheduled.

Periodically update the notification to keep the user informed of the job's status and progress. If you cannot determine the transfer size ahead of scheduling the job, or need to update the estimated transfer size, use the new API, updateEstimatedNetworkBytes() to update the transfer size after it becomes known.

Recommendations

To run UIDT jobs effectively, do the following:

Clearly define network constraints and job execution constraints to specify when the job should be executed.

Execute the task asynchronously in onStartJob() ; for example, you can do this by using a coroutine . If you don't run the task asynchronously, the work runs on the main thread and might block it, which can cause an ANR.

To avoid running the job longer than necessary, call jobFinished() when the transfer finishes, whether it succeeds or fails. That way, the job doesn't run longer than necessary. To discover why a job was stopped, implement the onStopJob() callback method and call JobParameters.getStopReason() .

Backward compatibility

There is currently no Jetpack library that supports UIDT jobs. For this reason, we recommend that you gate your change with code that verifies that you're running on Android 14 or higher. On lower Android versions, you can use WorkManager's foreground service implementation as a fallback approach.

Here's an example of code that checks for the appropriate system version:

Stop UIDT jobs

Both the user and the system can stop user-initiated transfer jobs.

By the user, from Task Manager

The user can stop a user-initiated data transfer job that appears in the Task Manager .

At the moment that the user presses Stop , the system does the following:

  • Terminates your app's process immediately, including all other jobs or foreground services running.
  • Doesn't call onStopJob() for any running jobs.
  • Prevets user-visible jobs from being rescheduled.

For these reasons, it's recommended to provide controls in the notification posted for the job to allow gracefully stopping and rescheduling the job.

Note that, under special circumstances , the Stop button doesn't appear next to the job in the Task Manager, or the job isn't shown in the Task Manager at all.

By the system

Unlike regular jobs, user-initiated data transfer jobs are unaffected by App Standby Buckets quotas . However, the system still stops the job if any of the following conditions occur:

  • A developer-defined constraint is no longer met.
  • The system determines that the job has run for longer than necessary to complete the data transfer task.
  • The system needs to prioritize system health and stop jobs due to increased thermal state.
  • The app process is killed due to low device memory.

When the job is stopped by the system for reasons other than low device memory, the system calls onStopJob() , and the system retries the job at a time that the system deems to be optimal. Make sure that your app can persist the data transfer state even if onStopJob() isn't called, and that your app can restore this state when onStartJob() is called again.

Conditions allowed for scheduling user-initiated data transfer jobs

Apps can only start a user-initiated data transfer job if the app is in the visible window, or if certain conditions are met:

  • If an app can launch activities from the background , it can also launch user-initiated data transfer jobs from the background.
  • If an app has an activity in the back stack of an existing task on the Recents screen, that alone doesn't allow a user-initiated data transfer job to run.

If the job is scheduled to run at a time when the necessary conditions are not met, the job fails and returns a RESULT_FAILURE error code.

Constraints that are allowed for user-initiated data transfer jobs

To support jobs running at optimal points, Android offers the ability to assign constraints to each job type. These constraints are available as of Android 13.

Note : The following table only compares the constraints that vary between each job type. See JobScheduler developer page or work constraints for all constraints.

The following table shows the different job types that support a given job constraint, as well as the set of job constraints that WorkManager supports. Use the search bar before the table to filter the table by the name of a job constraint method.

These are the constraints allowed with user-initiated data transfer jobs:

  • setBackoffCriteria(JobInfo.BACKOFF_POLICY_EXPONENTIAL)
  • setClipData()
  • setEstimatedNetworkBytes()
  • setMinimumNetworkChunkBytes()
  • setPersisted()
  • setNamespace()
  • setRequiredNetwork()
  • setRequiredNetworkType()
  • setRequiresBatteryNotLow()
  • setRequiresCharging()
  • setRequiresStorageNotLow()

The following list shows some steps on how to test your app's jobs manually:

  • To get the job ID, get the value that is defined upon the job being built.

To run a job immediately, or to retry a stopped job, run the following command in a terminal window:

To simulate the system force-stopping a job (due to system health or out-of-quota conditions), run the following command in a terminal window:
