Knut-thesis-template.
This is the unofficial template for the Korea National University of Transportation (KNUT) thesis.
File Structures and Contents
Each of the files and directories in the template as described as below:
- manuscript.tex : It contains the main tex code including the imports, variables, and combining the abstract and all the pages
- frontmatter : The dimensions of the front cover pages are different from those of the rest of the thesis, so there is a separate Tex file, frontmatter.tex . First, you need to update this text file and generate the PDF file in the same directory for direct usage in the main thesis file.
- titlePages : This directory contains the rest of the title pages, and as the dimensions of these pages as the same as the main thesis, there is no need to generate the pdf, these files are directly imported in the main thesis file
- abstract : This directory contains the abstract of the thesis both in English and Korean
- chapters : This directory contains the individual chapters in the thesis. These chapters are then imported and compiled in the main manuscript.tex file
- figures : This directory contains all the necessary graphics and figures used in the thesis.
- references.bib : This file contains all the citations used in the thesis
Download the repository as a zip file and import it in Overleaf for updating the latex text in Overleaf.
- first update the title.tex and title2.text , to update the contents of the front cover pages, and then compile the frontmatter.tex to generate the frontmatter.pdf pdf, save it in the same directory, as this file is directly imported in the main text file
- update the titlePages and the rest of the contents in the chapters and abstract
- save all the figures in the figures directory
- put all your citations in the references.bib file
- compile the manuscript.tex , your thesis is ready to be print
- all the fonts used in this thesis are the default ones, for better results and to match with the university template, change the fonts and their sizes accordingly

How to align an epigraph item
I have the following epigraph object
Initially, the epigraph object sticks to the right margin. Is it possible to center the object, or perhaps even align it to right margin? I have attempted the likes of
But it does note work. Furthermore, rather than having a horizontal line separating "Some quote." from From me. , I want to only have a dash in the sense -From me below the quote "Some quote." . I have already attempted to consult some summaries of the epigraph package, however, I could not find anything. Any ideas?
- 1 This may not be the actual solution to your problem, but still something you should absolutely fix: there is a closing curly brace missing in your code. It should be \epigraph{"Some quote."}{\textit{From me.}} . – moewe Commented May 10, 2020 at 12:38
- For quotation marks I would suggest the package csquotes , then you can write \enquote{Some quote.} to get good looking quotation marks. (It may be possible to modify \epigraph to print the quotation marks and italics automatically. That would save you some typing.) – moewe Commented May 10, 2020 at 12:39
- What do you mean by "align it to right margin"? Can you add a picture of what you mean? – moewe Commented May 10, 2020 at 12:41
- 2 You may want to try \renewcommand{\epigraphflush}{center} or \renewcommand{\epigraphflush}{flushleft} . \setlength{\epigraphrule}{0pt} can help you get rid of the line. There are many more options. Have a look at the eprigraph documentation: mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/epigraph/epigraph.pdf . An alternative package with a different interface and option handling is ctan.org/pkg/epigraph-keys – moewe Commented May 10, 2020 at 12:44
- It works, thanks! – MinaThuma Commented May 10, 2020 at 13:41
The position of the epigraph can be controlled by redefining \epigraphflush . The default value is flushright and prints the epigraph at the right side of the page. With
you get it at the centre or the page and with
at the left side.
The line can be controlled by setting the length \epigraphrule . If that length is 0pt the rule vanishes.
For example
The package offers more settings to modify the appearance of the epigraph. You can modify \textflush and \sourceflush for the alignment of text and source (both are flushright by default; they work like \epigraphflush and can take the values \flusright , \center and \flushleft ).
An alternative to the epigraph package could be the epigraph-keys package . It offers a slightly more compact key-value interface for customisation.
Unfortunately, neither package offers a simple way to automatically add the quotes without having to add them explicitly with \enquote , but I guess one normally does not enclose the complete epigraph with quotation marks since it is clear that it is a quotation.
I used csquotes ' \enquote commands instead of " , because csquotes gives you typographically nice quotation marks (and you don't have to think about language conventions: csquotes can adapt to the current language).
Just because I mentioned it in the comments as well
is a syntax error. The final closing brace is missing. It should have been

Nov 18, 2016 at 17:49. AFAIK, there are no scientific standards when it comes to dedication pages. usually they are used to express gratitude to a professor or to one's parents and family, etc. In Memoriam pages can be included as well, sometimes half-titles are used for these sort of pages. Or you could add additional pages after the title page.
A solution consists in patching some epigraph internal commands, with the etoolbox package, so that the default font shape for the epigraph text be italic (in an upshape context): \documentclass[12pt]{book} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage{amsmath,amsfonts,mathabx}

9. Since the quotation paragraph allows paragraph breaks, and some users may therefore be tempted to provide a two-paragraph inspirational quote, you may want to use {\itshape#1} instead of \textit{#1}, as \textit does not permit paragraph breaks in its scope. - Mico. The preamble. In this example, the main.tex file is the root document and is the .tex file that will draw the whole document together. The first thing we need to choose is a document class. The article class isn't designed for writing long documents (such as a thesis) so we'll choose the report class, but we could also choose the book class.. We can also change the font size by adding square ...

34. Well-chosen, non-frivolous epigraphs can enhance a thesis. So can spending the time looking for epigrpahs on research/writing instead. @DanielE.Shub If you have to actively spend time finding an epigraph, it is very likely one that will only annoy your readers due to sounding artificial.
I guess you mean an epigraph (or dictum). Depending on the used document class there are some possible solutions. The epigraph package provides a solution for the standard classes. The KOMA Script bundle provides the \dictum [author] {text} command for its classes. The memoir class provides a command and an environment for epigraphs.

The template retains Sam Evans's use of the quotchap and minitoc packages to (optionally) include an epigraph and brief table of contents at the beginning of each chapter.
I did originally style the individual epigraphs. But when I moved to having more than 1 epigraph, I invoked the \begin{epigraph} env, which seems not to play ball with the command: \setlength{\epigraphwidth}{.8\textwidth} And thus, it all starts to get a bit higgledy-piggledy. I have actually settled on the style below, but personally I think ...

Greets to everybody, I've got a consult to do: I am writing a long document (a thesis) and I'd like to open each chapter, instead of the standard way in which Latex does it for "book" documents, with a page in which there was just the number and title of the chapter, and below, a famous quote, related and as an introduction to the content of such chapter, and nothing else.
I would like to start my thesis with a blank page with a quote of a famous scientist. I however do not find an elegant way to create the following in a estecially pleasing way (a larger font, stylish quotes). Key points: Insert blank page with quote centered both vertically and horizontally. "Quote" Author 1955
