PhD Programmes in Technology Studies Computer Science Software Engineering
Software engineering is a computer-focused career that involves developing computer programs and systems that are user-friendly, innovative, and fit the desires of customers and clients. Software engineering students learn about applying engineering principles to the development of software and computer programs used and accessed on different devices.
Europe is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the western most point of Eurasia, Europe is usually divided from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas.
The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

Programme structure
The PhD in High Performance Computing, Computational & Data Science, Software Engineering trains you as a researcher and allows you to develop advanced techniques and in-depth knowledge in a specialist area. You will develop an all-round knowledge of your discipline, and a broad range of transferable skills.
You will carry out independent research, resulting in an original contribution to knowledge in your chosen area, working under the guidance of your supervisors.
The prescribed period of study is 36 months if studying full-time, or 72 months if studying part-time.
Year 1 of PhD studies is probationary. Your supervisor will identify your training needs, if any, and invite you to attend lectures relevant to your research topic. These lectures may be selected from those offered to MSc students or may be specialist courses and seminars organised by the School's various research groupings.
Towards the end of Year 1, you will be expected to submit a thesis proposal which identifies a specific research topic, reviews the relevant literature, outlines a plan of research to address the topic, and describes progress made so far.
Progress during your PhD is assessed by annual reviews, which formally determine whether you can progress with your PhD. You will be required to complete and pass a PhD annual review at the end of each year of study and a thesis is expected to be submitted at the end of Year 3. Following thesis submission, you will be required to attend an oral examination (or viva) which will be conducted by an external and internal examiner.
Training and support
You will carry out your research within EPCC under the guidance of a supervisory team.
You will be expected to attend seminars and meetings of relevant research groups and may also attend lectures that are relevant to your research topic. You may also be encouraged to contribute to EPCC's seminar series.
Periodic reviews of your progress will be conducted to assist with research planning.
A programme of transferable skills courses facilitates broader professional development in a wide range of topics, from writing and presentation skills to entrepreneurship and career strategies. With the support of your supervisor, you will conduct an annual Training Needs Assessment, during which you will agree and plan your schedule of complementary training.
You will have full access to the courses delivered as part of EPCC's MSc programmes in HPC and HPC with Data Science. To help further develop your skills, you will be welcome (if not encouraged) to attend any areas of these with which you are unfamiliar. Some PhD students also contribute to teaching, training, and outreach activities at EPCC, including as paid demonstrators/teaching assistants.
Opportunities may also arise to contribute to external or internal hackathon events or to support activities such as the Student Cluster Competition.
EPCC is home to some of Europe’s most advanced supercomputing systems that enable high-level grid computing, data integration, computer simulation and process optimisation. These include national-level facilities used by researchers on behalf of various UK research funding councils:

PhD Process
The PhD process at SSE, is well structured and accompanied by close and regular supervision.
Your PhD in the working group "Software Systems Engineering" is intensively supervised and is supported by regular PhD seminars and PhD workshops . The PhD process is structured into the phases as shown below. Each of the first five phases ends with a Quality Gate. At each transition to the next phase, these Quality Gates ensure that the progress and quality of your work allows you to successfully proceed to the next step.
Phase | Meilenstein |
---|---|
The outline is a brief sketch of the main idea of your PhD thesis. It typically takes the form of a few Powerpoint slides. You are allowed to choose adequate topics on your own, or we may initially determine an interesting research area for you. The Quality Gate ‘Outline finished’ is expected to be reached within six months. Formally, it comprises the following aspects: | |
Writing a proposal means extending the outline to an about 15 pages long, proper textual description. The Quality Gate ‘Proposal completed’ should be reached 18 months after you began working with us. Your proposal will consider the following points: | |
Planning you’re A-level publication means that you prepare a submission for a conference or journal with a high reputation. You are expected to lay down your schedule for this in two or three pages. The schedule must be ready after 18 months, or earlier. The final decision which conference or journal will be considered as A level will be taken by your professor together with your supervisor. The plan may be presented at our semi-annual doctoral workshop. The presentation should focus on the following aspects: | |
We expect your first publication to be accepted within 24 months after the beginning of your work. This can be any publication that conforms to the specifics given below. In particular, your first publication is independent from the A-level publication referred to in Quality Gates 3 and 5. Formal clearance will be given by your professor and by your supervisor. Prior to this, the conference/journal must be agreed upon and your paper needs to pass an internal review. Your first publication shall be accepted at an adequate publication venue, which can be either a renowned conference or journal, a highly recognised workshop, or a doctoral symposium. In any case, the following requirements are obligatory: | |
Submission of your first A-level publication is due 30 months after commencement of work. Formal clearance will be given by the your professor and by your supervisor. Prior to this, the conference/journal must be agreed upon and your paper needs to pass an internal review. | |
After successfully completing the previous five phases and Quality Gates, the final phase focuses on writing your PhD thesis. After submitting the PhD thesis, it will be evaluated. In a final PhD presentation followed by a discussion you will present and defend your PhD thesis. |

PhD Student in Software Engineering
Job information, offer description.
This position is a full-time funded PhD position with research funded by WASP . You will have the opportunity to collaborate for five years with a world-leading research team and put yourself into a great position for a future career in academia or industry. You will also be part of the WASP research school which gives you ample opportunity to connect to and get input and feedback from other WASP PhD students and faculty both nationally and internationally. Project description We are currently looking for a PhD student working in the general area of software engineering and AI/Machine Learning at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. The position is funded through WASP (Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program). We expect the prospective student to be interested in research in one or more of the following topics: - Software testing augmentation/automation. - Explainable/interpretable or applied AI. - Optimisation- or Search-based software engineering. - Development and evolution of testing tools and frameworks / Creating testing tools. The complexity of software is rapidly increasing, with components that are either traditionally coded or implemented as ML/AI models. However, comprehensive specifications for these components are often lacking, and when they do exist, they tend to be incomplete. To ensure high-quality systems, it is crucial to guarantee that components behave as intended, especially at the boundaries of the input space where the output or behaviour changes, or should change, dramatically. The goal of this PhD project is to improve upon our current research and tools to automatically discover, extract, and condense understandable specifications for the boundary behaviour of both traditional and ML/AI software systems and components. This will be accomplished by advancing methods for automated boundary value analysis and specification mining using ML, and by combining these methods in novel ways. The person to be hired will conduct research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Robert Feldt ( http://robertfeldt.net/ ) and co-supervision of Dr. Francisco Gomes de Oliveira Neto ( https://franciscogon.com/ ). You will work in tight collaboration with the Interaction Design and Software Engineering (IDSE) division at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg. Software Engineering at Chalmers : Our office is located in beautiful Lindholmen, overseeing the river where it meets the sea. You will be embedded in a vibrant and tightly-knit group conducting research in varied fields of software engineering, including software testing, requirements engineering, human aspects of software engineering, empirical software engineering, and software development bots. With approximately 20 faculty members, we are arguably one of the largest academic software engineering groups. We work actively to achieve a working environment with equal conditions, and values the qualities that diversity brings to its operations. The division has hosted past international conferences such as EASE 2022, ICSE 2018, ICSA 2017, and REFSQ 2015. For industrial research, the division hosts the Software Center, an associated institute with a network of five universities and ten global companies including Siemens, Axis, and Jeppesen. Major responsibilities A PhD position in Sweden is a full-time employment with a competitive monthly salary and full social benefits (e.g., parental leave and compensation for sick leave). The position is limited to a maximum of five years of full-time study (assuming 20% teaching and other departmental duties spread over the 5 year period). There are no tuition fees for PhD studies at Chalmers. Further, as this is a position within WASP, participation in various WASP activities (WASP graduate school, meetings and conferences, as well as study trips) is mandatory. After completing PhD studies at Chalmers University of Technology, you will be in great demand from Swedish as well as international industry, and you will have an excellent basis for an academic career as well. Qualifications To qualify as a PhD student you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field, by the starting date. The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Strong programming skills and knowledge in modern software engineering processes is required. If you are not familiar with Swedish, you are encouraged, but not required, to learn it during your employment. Chalmers offers Swedish courses. The following knowledge is a meritorious: - Practical experience with explainable/interpretable AI. - Proficiency with, preferably, Julia and/or Python programming languages. - Use of testing frameworks (e.g. JUnit, pytest, pitest, MutPy, Hypothesis, Quickcheck). - Prior work in a research project, or scientific publications. Contract terms Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years. Application procedure The application should be marked with Ref 20230327 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as PDF-files, as below. Maximum size for each file is 40 MB. Please note that the system does not support Zip files.
