Praxis Speech-Language Pathology Exam Registration

If you are required to take the exam for a teacher education program or state certification, you need to have an account with Educational Testing Service (ETS). Once you have established your account, you can apply to take the exam.

During the exam registration, select the test format (online or at a testing center), test location (if you are taking the test at a testing center), and test date. You will also need to pay the $146 exam fee.

In-person Testing

On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing facility at least 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time. Once you arrive, you will be asked to present two forms of valid identification, one of which must be a photo ID.

Personal items will not be allowed into the testing center, so it is best to leave things like bags, notebooks, and food items at home or in your car.

At-home Testing

To take the exam remotely, you must use a laptop or desktop computer for the exam. Your computer will need a speaker, microphone, and camera.

You will need to download and install the ETS Secure Test Browser on the computer you will use to test. Your environment must be private, with no traffic in and out of your testing area. The area where you take the exam must be clear of all personal items, and you will not be allowed to wear headphones. The proctor will ask you to move the camera around so that your testing area can be observed, and at the end of your exam, the proctor will watch as you erase any notes you made.

Before you register for at-home test delivery, make sure you meet all the requirements listed, and run a test of the secure browser to ensure your computer can function smoothly.

How the Exam is Scored

Each question answered correctly is worth one raw point. Incorrect and unanswered questions are not penalized, so you should make a guess anytime you do not know the correct answer.

Your raw score is converted to a scaled score, and you will receive an official score report about five weeks after you complete the exam.

The passing score in most states is 162, but some states require a different score.

The Praxis️ exam for Speech-Language Pathology tests the knowledge of aspiring clinicians in all settings of possible employment (e.g., schools, skilled nursing facilities, and hospitals). The Praxis️ is required to obtain the Certification of Clinical Competence awarded by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). State licensure boards also utilize exam scores to issue a state license to speech-language pathologists. The Praxis️ exam evaluates knowledge of the “big nine” areas within the scope of practice for speech-language pathologists and provides a chance for examinees to demonstrate skills required to enter the workforce as a competent clinician.

Praxis Speech Language Pathology Test Breakdown

The Praxis️ exam contains questions from three content categories (e.g., Foundations, Evaluation, and Treatment) resulting in 132 total questions. The examinee has 150 minutes to complete the entire test. The testing format relies solely on “selected response questions” meaning the test taker must choose the correct answer from four possible answer choices (e.g., A, B, C, or D).

Praxis Speech Language Pathology Foundations

Let’s talk about some concepts that you will more than likely see on the Praxis️ Speech-Language Pathology test.

A normal swallow can be broken down into three different stages. During the oral phase, food is lateralized to the molar table and formed into a cohesive bolus through rotary mastication patterns. The bolus is then transported posteriorly toward the pharynx. The pharyngeal phase is initiated and the bolus then enters the vallecula and slides down the pyriform sinuses. Epiglottic inversion and hyolaryngeal excursion and elevation help protect the airway from penetration and aspiration. The esophageal stage begins once the cricopharyngeus muscle relaxes and opens the upper esophageal sphincter. The esophagus relies on peristalsis to transport the bolus to the stomach.

Social Communication Benchmarks for 2-3 Year Olds

Social communication refers to the ability to use language during social contexts. Social communication development begins immediately after birth (e.g., preference to look at human faces, vocal turn-taking, etc.). By 2-3 years old, a child should be able to change conversation topics, begin to provide descriptive detail to engage listeners, request clarification during communication breakdowns, and use language for imaginative play.

Here are some concepts you should know.

Conflict of Interest

The ASHA Code of Ethics was created to protect consumers as well as the integrity of Speech-Language Pathology as a profession. The Code of Ethics describes a conflict of interest as something that overlaps professional obligation and personal interests. A conflict of interest may involve incentives, financial rewards, family relationships, etc. For example, a new hearing aid company might offer advertisement of your clinic in their brochure in exchange for using their company. A conflict of interest would arise due to the personal gain involved with selecting that specific company. It is best practice to  avoid  all situations that have the potential to result in a conflict of interest.

Purposes of Documentation

Documentation is crucial for third party reimbursement of skilled services. Clinicians must demonstrate medical necessity in order to deem services necessary and reasonable. The following must be included for Medicare documentation: evaluation, treatment plan, treatment notes, progress reports, and discharge summaries. Medicaid documentation follows the same guidelines as Medicare. However, different states are likely to have state specific Medicaid requirements.

Praxis Speech Language Pathology Screening

Let’s talk about some concepts that you will more than likely see on the Praxis Speech-Language Pathology test.

Role of the SLP

A screening for a speech and language disorder is conducted when an impairment is suspected. A screening does not provide a diagnosis, but instead gives the clinician insight to whether a full evaluation is necessary. Screens may include both informal measures (e.g., case history, self-made questionnaires) and formal measures (e.g., provides normative data).

Communication and Swallowing Disorders in Children

All children develop differently. Therefore, most developmental milestones are provided in age ranges. However, there are signs and “red flags” that may lead to identification of speech and swallowing disorders in the pediatric population. The following are possible indicators of pediatric speech/language and swallowing disorders and warrant further evaluation:

  • If a parent reports their child is a “quiet baby”
  • If a parent reports recurrent ear infections
  • Child presents with failure to thrive
  • Child exhibits difficulty breathing while eating
  • 7-12 months: limited sound inventory, no gestures
  • 18-24 months: lacks 2-word combinations
  • 24 months: less than 50 words
  • 2 years old: not producing sounds p, b, m, h, w
  • 3 years old: less than 75% intelligible

Assessing Speech Disorders

The assessment process begins with a case history interview. The speech-language pathologist may conduct this interview with a parent, patient, teacher, etc. Informal measures utilized for a speech disorder evaluation could contain a language sample, classroom observation, curriculum based assessment, stimulability testing, or an oral motor exam. Formal testing measures include standardized tests like the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation-3 and the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment -2. A clinician must look at an individual’s cultural background, age, language, and suspected severity to determine the most appropriate methodology for the assessment.

Interviewing Techniques

The case history interview can provide valuable information to the speech-language pathologist regarding a patient’s disorder. It is important to conduct the interview in a comfortable location and demonstrate non-threatening/ non-authoritative body language. To ensure comprehension, ask questions using layman’s terms. For example, instead of asking a question regarding a child’s speech intelligibility, reword the question to state, “How often do you understand what your child is saying?”

Stuttering versus Cluttering

Disfluencies occur in all speakers. The deciding factor in determining a person who stutters is the type and frequency

of the disfluency. Part word repetitions, (e.g., ba-ba-balloon), prolongations (e.g., ssssssmile), and blocks (e.g., difficulty initiating sound production) are typically considered stuttering-like disfluencies. Normal disfluent behaviors include interjections and revisions.

Cluttering is also a fluency disorder. However, excessive speaking rate, abnormal pauses, and language/phonological errors differentiate the disorder from stuttering. A person who clutters will often coarticulate or omit a syllable (e.g., “I waneatchick”).

Tympanogram

A tympanogram is the visual representation of the correlation between tympanic membrane movement and pressure in the ear canal. Tympanometry gives clinicians important information regarding the mobility (e.g., moves too much or not enough) and condition (e.g., possible perforation) of the eardrum. The figure below represents the different possible types of tympanograms.

Type A = WFL

Type As (shallow) = middle ear is stiff

Type Ad (deep) = middle ear is floppy

Type B = possible perforation of eardrum

Type C = middle ear retracted

Praxis Speech Language Pathology Etiology

Praxis Speech Language Pathology Treatment

Here are some concepts you need to know.

Treatment plans should reflect a patient’s age and cognitive ability. For example, you are treating a 70-year-old female post-stroke. You want to use a puzzle during your session to target visual neglect and problem solving. Instead of utilizing a puzzle with cartoon characters that might be perceived as childish, create a puzzle from cut up cereal or snack boxes from the pantry. The same goals are being targeted. However, the delivery in which the goals are targeted are more relevant, functional, and tailored to the demographics of the patient.

Treatment Plan

When generating a treatment plan for any disorder, it is critical to choose treatment targets that will have the greatest impact on the patient’s functional performance. When selecting initial targets for a child with a speech sound disorder, the clinician needs to determine which approach would be most beneficial to the child. The following approaches are considered when choosing initial sounds targets:

  • client-specific approach (e.g., choosing targets that are relevant in the child’s life)
  • developmental approach (e.g., selecting targets based on developmental norms)
  • intelligibility approach (e.g., targeting sounds that have the most positive impact on improving intelligibility)
  • non-developmental approach (e.g., choosing targets that are more complex to promote the greatest change in the child’s phonological system)

Once sound targets are determined, the clinician must decide if a vertical, horizontal, or cyclical teaching approach is most appropriate. Depending on the severity of the disorder, age, and type of errors, a variety of treatment techniques are available which include the multiple opposition approach, minimal opposition approach, core vocabulary approach, cycles approach, distinctive features therapy, and metaphon approach. The different techniques benefit a certain population within speech sound disorders. Considering client-specific characteristics will allow clinicians to decide which approach will leave a lasting impact on their client’s speech inventory.

Praxis Speech Language Pathology Treatment Evaluation

Measuring Baseline Performance

Gathering data regarding a patient’s baseline performance is important to measure progress throughout the course of the treatment period. Clinicians must know where their patient started to create realistic and appropriate goals. For example, if at baseline a patient is NPO with a PEG tube following a massive stroke, the first short term goal a clinician writes should not be expecting the patient to safely swallow a regular diet and thin liquids within the next few weeks.

Taking baseline data can be as complicated or easy as one makes it. Many clinicians prefer to make probes or datasheets that are administered on a routine basis (e.g., at the end of a six-week period, once a month, every week, etc.). These probes contain whatever prompts necessary to determine a patient’s initial baseline and also allow for an easy and organized way to track growth throughout the treatment period.

Short- and Long-Term Outcomes

Short-term and long-term outcomes are created to map out the purpose of treatment. It allows for the clinician to know what areas are currently under target and see a glimpse at where the treatment is headed. Short term goals answer the questions, “who?, will perform what?, how well?, and under what context?” At the end of treatment, outcomes allow insurance, clinicians, patients, family members, etc. to see the progress made during the treatment period. Goals can be used as a counseling tool and stated as “At the start of therapy, your child could produce /b/ with 20% accuracy and now he is producing it with 95% accuracy in all word positions.” Without goals and outcomes, treatment plans would lack a concrete focus.

Resonance is produced by the vocal folds and filtered by the pharynx and oral and nasal cavities. The size and shape of the vocal tract enhances or dampens harmonics. Languages contain sounds that are created by a specific ratio of oral to nasal energy. Resonance disorders occur when there is an imbalance in the energy’s ratio caused by both anatomical (e.g., velopharyngeal insufficiency, cleft palate, etc.) and physiological issues (e.g., velopharyngeal incompetence, etc.). A variety of treatment options are available including pharmacological, surgical, and prosthetic management. Our role as speech-language pathologists occur when a resonance disorder is present due to a structure malfunctioning. Therapy techniques can include visual feedback, auditory biofeedback, and teaching correct articulator placement. When treating individuals with resonance disorders, interprofessional collaboration with otolaryngologists and craniofacial teams is crucial in providing appropriate care.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication

AAC encompasses an abundance of ways people communicate non-verbally. The two branches of AAC are classified under unaided systems (e.g., uses your own body) and aided systems (e.g., requires something other than your body). Intervention of AAC can include how to use the device, implementing techniques to increase rate, software updates, symbol selection, and choosing appropriate core and fringe vocabulary. To successfully implement an AAC device, a team approach is required with relevant members (e.g., teachers, family, other therapists, physicians, etc.). When determining an appropriate AAC approach and device, many factors are evaluated to find the best fit for the client. Medical diagnosis, feature matching, sensory/physical abilities, language skills, and opportunity/access barriers are some of the areas under consideration.

And that’s some basic info about the Praxis Speech-Language Pathology exam.

Now, let’s look at a few practice questions in each area to see how these concepts might actually appear on the real test.

The Answer & Explanation

Did you get it right? The correct answer is: B

The audiogram shows a hearing loss in the left ear only. Hearing in the right ear, depicted by the symbols in red, falls within the normal range. The left ear shows a moderate hearing loss in the frequencies from 1kHz to 8kHz. The bone conduction thresholds (shown in brackets) match the air conduction thresholds, meaning that the loss is sensorineural.

Incorrect Answer Explanations

Answer A : This audiogram does not contain any clear indications of malingering. One possible indicator is a shadow curve, in which unmasked bone conduction thresholds in the affected ear “shadow” air conduction thresholds in the unaffected ear. During unmasked bone conduction, both cochleas vibrate and the better ear is expected to respond. There is no shadow curve on this audiogram.

Answer C : In a conductive loss, bone conduction thresholds will be better than the air conduction thresholds. On this audiogram, the bone and air conduction thresholds match.

Answer D : The right ear shows normal hearing in this audiogram, so this cannot be a bilateral loss.

Bottom Line

Alignment between air and bone conduction thresholds on an audiogram indicates a sensorineural loss.

SLP Praxis Exam Tips: What to Know

The SLP Praxis exam is a 100+ question standardized test that one must pass to earn their CCCs. Love or hate standardized tests, it’s a necessary hurdle for speech-language pathologists!

What is the SLP Praxis Exam?

The basics: The SLP Praxis exam (code: 5331) is a 132-question, multiple choice exam that covers the foundational knowledge, assessment, and treatment of all areas related to speech-language pathology. Throughout your graduate program, you probably heard about the “Big 9” areas of study; this test covers all of those areas. Approximately one-third of questions relate to the foundational knowledge of different speech-language areas, one-third relate to the assessment of speech-language disorders, and one-third relate to the treatment of them. Most of the questions are multiple choice, meaning you choose, A, B, C, or D, but some of them may say something like, “Choose all that apply,” and you can choose 1 or more correct answers.

The time: You have 150 minutes to complete the SLP Praxis exam, which means you have a little over one minute to answer each question. Like other comprehensive exams, some questions might take you less than 30 seconds and some may take you well over 60 seconds. Knowing how much time you have to answer each question is helpful and can help you pace yourself throughout the test.

The score: A passing score is 162; however, it’s hard to figure out how many points each question is worth. The Praxis website doesn’t specifically outline how many questions you have to get right in order to pass. What we do know is that you can score between 100-200, that you find out your preliminary score right away, and that some questions don’t count towards your score. The questions that don’t count towards your score are considered “pretest” questions that the administration is testing out for future use (how kind of them). You usually receive a hard copy of your official score a few weeks after you take it. This is important to retain because ASHA will request this information for your CCCs and some employers might for your first SLP position.

When to take the SLP Praxis Exam

We took the exam when we had finished taking all of our graduate courses but still had practicum hours to finish. Our university required that we pass the exam in order to earn our degree but not all schools require that. You can take the exam during your Clinical Fellowship (CF). I am glad I took it while I was still in “school” mode but it’s not necessary. Taking the Praxis before you have finished your graduate coursework gives you more time in the event that you were not successful the first go, too.

Top 5 Things to Know about the SLP Praxis Exam

  • Your score doesn’t determine how “good” of an SLP you will be! SERIOUSLY. Long, arduous, multiple-choice exams don’t translate into the clinical application of speech-language pathology in any setting. If you get a good score, you can definitely be a good SLP, but you can also definitely be a good SLP with any exam score. Historically, I (Becca) am someone who generally does well with multiple choice exams, which was an advantage for sure, but if you are not someone who does well with multiple choice exams, you can still pass! Kristi considers herself to be more in the “average range” when taking exams like this and she also did well on the SLP Praxis.
  • You can get a lot of questions wrong and still pass the exam! While we don’t know the *exact* number, we can tell you that you don’t need anywhere close to a perfect score to pass. So, if you are bummed out about a question (or series of questions) you were stuck on, as you continue your exam, remember not to sweat it!
  • The questions are not trying to trick you! I know that sometimes I overthink questions and wonder if there’s a hidden meaning I’m not getting, but this test isn’t trying to do that. It’s trying to see if you are able to answer questions about speech-language pathology. This is not to say there aren’t going to be *tricky* questions, but I find it helpful to remind myself that there aren’t supposed to be *trick* questions.
  • Preparing is necessary! It can be tempting to skip studying as you juggle all of your other school/life responsibilities; however, studying and preparing for the test is definitely advised. There are multiple ways to study, which we will discuss below.
  • Passing the test and earning your Certificate of Clinical Competence (“CCCs”) is a great feeling! You have worked so hard for this! Not only does it give you a great sense of accomplishment, you are also able to have more employment opportunities since you aren’t required to have a supervisor after your CF is completed.

How to Study for the Praxis Exam

Get materials.

We used the SLP Praxis Exam study book for the majority of our studying. You can find it on ASHA or on Amazon . It helped us organize our studying as it breaks different areas down into different chapters. I also supplemented with flashcards and charts that I made for specific areas that I wanted to study more, including the cranial nerves and Brown’s morphemes. The Medical SLPs’ Praxis Study Guide is also helpful!

I also made voice memos of myself reciting information and listened back to it as I was driving. I was preparing for the exam during a time when I had some long commutes so it helped me feel productive during busy days! I am also a huge podcast person so it was like my own personal podcast.

ASHA’s Practice Portal of Clinical Topics is also a great resource. I find it more helpful to study off-screen, e.g. not on a computer, but you may not feel that way! You can also print off different areas to study as well. Additionally, the Praxis has free resources (emailed to you) with different areas to study, practice questions, and general test-taking preparation tips.

Make a schedule

I started studying about 12 weeks before the test. I signed up for it at the end of the summer and started studying as the spring semester ended. I wrote down all of the areas I needed to study (mostly using the chapters from the Praxis book) and broke down which weeks I would study each area. I tried to spend 20-30 minutes each day studying, with a little more time on the weekends. This wasn’t perfect; sometimes I studied six days a week and sometimes I studied two days a week. Remember: perfection isn’t attainable. I spent the last week reviewing content that was more difficult for me.

Take a practice test

One of the best ways to prepare for tests is to take practice tests. Through the Praxis website are three practice tests you can buy. If you’re worried about timing, you can try to sit for an entire session and see if you are able to get through the test in 150 minutes. This may provide good insight into whether or not you should try to speed up or slow down when taking the actual test. If you’re not too worried about timing, consider taking practice tests in chunks, answering 10-15 questions a day during your last few weeks of preparation. We should also mention that we did not pass all of our practice tests and did just fine! There are definitely some tests out there that are “tougher” than others.

Collaborate with others

It can also be helpful to discuss concepts and information with other students in your cohort! You can each pick a topic, e.g. “assessment of pediatric language disorders” or “treatment options for dysphagia,” and give a mini-lecture on it. “Teaching” information to others is another highly effective study strategy and it also helps you understand where you may have some knowledge gaps or areas to study more in-depth.

Use a tutor

If you’re struggling with making time to study, understanding difficult concepts, or knowing how to even approach preparing for the SLP Praxis, using a tutor may be beneficial for you. There are a number of tutoring services available online so you can use them virtually. We found that SLPs were helpful tutors, but also gave a sense of mentorship as well. Talking to SLPs that have been in our position was definitely comforting and reassuring; this is just a brief hurdle in the path to a successful career! What I Studied

Everything.

Just kidding, I did obviously try to review everything but there were certain topics that I focused on more than others. This was influenced by what I felt I lacked in my clinical hours thus far. For example, I worked with a client who stuttered during one of my clinical placements, so I felt a bit more at ease with my fluency knowledge. I had a great practicum in a vents/trachs hospital and did a lot of work with dysphagia, so I didn’t spend as much time reviewing that. Kristi did not have a lot of dysphagia experience before taking the SLP Praxis so she reviewed this content more, both by studying the material and asking questions to those of us who did have the experience.

I did not have a lot of experience with motor speech disorders, voice disorders, or cleft palate, so I spent more time reviewing these topics. I also hadn’t been in a school setting when I took the exam, so I spent more time reviewing child language, articulation, and phonology information.

My Top 10 Areas to Study

This is a super-scientific list of topics to study. Not. In general, this is what I tried to focus on while studying.

  • ASHA Code of Ethics/applicable laws (e.g. IDEA)
  • The different types/characteristics of dysarthria
  • The different types/characteristics of aphasia
  • Articulation/phonology age of acquisition norms
  • Effects of dialects/different languages on Standard American English
  • Oral mechanism anatomy
  • Cranial nerves
  • Brown’s morphemes
  • Dysphagia assessment and treatment
  • Neurology basics

What I Didn’t Worry About

Having everything memorized. There is no way to hold alllll of the information related to speech-language pathology in your head all at once. There is a reason SLPs often specialize in specific fields!

Questions I didn’t know. There are some questions that you will just not know. Whether it be test-taking anxiety or concepts/terms that simply weren’t covered in your graduate courses, there are going to be questions you don’t know. I vividly remember there being a question about Van Riper’s Stuttering Modification Therapy, a topic I thought I knew front to back, without a multiple choice option that fit what I knew. I was a little frustrated but I guessed an answer and moved on.

Passing the SLP Praxis on my first try. Getting your CCCs does not require you to pass the exam on your first try. You can take the test when 28 days have passed since you last took it. While I was able to pass it when I took it initially, it’s not necessary. That helped relieve some of my nerves; best-case scenario was I passed, worst-case scenario I would try again next month. I reminded myself of this over and over (and over) again.

If you’re at the point where you’re taking the SLP Praxis exam, remember this: you made it through your undergraduate program, you were accepted into grad school, and you’re done (or almost done) with your graduate program! You have accomplished a lot of difficult things and you can accomplish this as well.
