Mass Maharaj Ravi Teja’s Dhamaka, in which he teamed up with glamorous Sreeleela, hit the theatres on Friday, 23 December.

Directed by Trinadha Rao Nakkina, the movie has been publicised as a pucca commercial entertainer. Read our review to find out whether it lived up to the buzz:

Swamy (Ravi Teja) is a daring middle-class youth who is making efforts to get a job. He happens to bump into Pranavi (Sreeleela) while a bunch of goons was abusing her. He saves her and a love story follows.

On the other hand, Anand (Ravi Teja in a dual role) is all set to take over as the CEO of People Mart, a billion-dollar business conglomerate.

Anand’s father Chakravarthy (Sachin Khedekar), a reputed businessman, built People Mart through years of hard work without compromising on values.

But trouble erupts when JP (Jayaram), a notorious and unscrupulous businessman, eyes People Mart and goes all out to acquire it by threatening Chakravarthy.

What is the relationship between Swamy and Anand? Does Anand succeed in saving People Mart from JP? Watch Dhamaka on the big screen to find the answers.

Entertaining narration and mass elements

Dhamaka ’s story consists of pucca mass elements that are aimed to entertain people from all walks of life. Director Trinadha Rao topped it up with an amusing narration.

Barring action sequences, almost all the scenes have been shot entertainingly and evoke laughs. This makes Dhamaka an out-and-out Ravi Teja film.

It has been a long time since the actor came up with this kind of comedy and Dhamaka is worth all the wait!

Ravi Teja has been struggling at the box office for some time now. His films have been missing the entertainment quotient that most of his movies usually carry.

But Dhamaka makes up for it all. It brings the energetic and entertaining Ravi Teja back to action and his form.

Sreeleela, who is of late emerging as a star heroine in Tollywood, is simply superb in her role. She steals the show as the love interest of Ravi Teja.

She also impresses the viewers with her energy and grace in the songs. Going by her performance in Dhamaka , she may soon rise to stardom in the industry.

Several senior actors like Tanikella Bharani, Sachin Khedekar, Rao Ramesh, and Tulasi play important roles.

Rao Ramesh and Hyper Adi’s comedy stands out. The comedy song featuring Rao Ramesh and Ravi Teja is a good experiment.

Bheems Ceciroleo composed the soundtrack and background score for Dhamaka .

He deserves credit for keeping the movie racy. “ Danda Kadiyal ”, “ Ninnu Chudabuddhi Avuntndi ”, and “ Pulsar Bike ” songs are turning out to be foot-tapping numbers.

Cinematographer Karthik Ghattamaneni ensured that the movie looks rich and stylish.

Pravin Pudi’s editing is okay.

It has been a long time since Ravi Teja came up with a quintessential commercial entertainer. Dhamaka puts an end to that wait!

After battling with failures, Ravi Teja made a strong comeback with Krack. However, his subsequent films Khiladi and Ramarao On Duty turned out to be disappointments. He now banks on Trinadha Rao Nakkina’s mass masala Dhamaka. Will Mass Maharaja entertain? Let’s check out.

What is it about?

Swamy (Ravi Teja) is a common man and son of Vasudeva Rao (Tanikella Bharani). He gets into fights and loses his job. He meets Pranavi (Sreeleela) and proposes to her. Anand Chakravarthy (Ravi Teja) is son of billionaire businessman Nanda Gopal Chakravarthy (Sachin Khedkar). Anand is considered for Pranavi. Pranavi likes both Swamy and Anand, but is confused about whom to choose. Anand’s company is in trouble due to a corporate baddie JP (Jayaram).  What’s the connection between Swamy and Anand? The film is about how the company and families are protected from JP.

Performances

Ravi Teja as Anand and Swamy get very stereotyped roles which is tough to see him. The film banks on him, but he can’t pull this off. Sreeleela is a big asset for this mass potboiler. She oozes her glamour easily and sizzles the screen. She does magic in songs. Tanikella Bharani as a middle-class father is alright. Sachin Khedkar is the helpless businessman whose company is going out of his hands. Jayaram is shown as routine villain. Rao Ramesh as Sreeleela’s father gets the greedy father role but his character has less seriousness and more fun. Hyper Aadi’s comedy is not fulfilling. Praveen gets wasted. None of the characters leave a strong impact.   Technicalities

Director Trinadha Rao got a big ticket chance to direct star Ravi Teja. Despite having Mass Maharaj, director fails to use the opportunity as he ends up choosing a lackluster commercial potboiler. Bheems’ energetic music works in the film’s favour. Visuals are eye-candy. The only blessing in disguise is the rich making and production values, the producers have splurged all over on a weak script. Songs are well shot.

Sreeleela & Songs Production Values

Weak Script Routine Elements

Ravi Teja and mass are synonymous. So, he chose a film that has no potential to work. It is totally dated. It is 90s film made by Trinadha Rao Nakkina with a routine treatment. Weak script, predictable scenes, streotype characters and bad humour make Dhamaka a Dhamaal.

One wonders what made Ravi Teja sign Dhamaka, probably a big fat pay cheque. The film is on familiar note with no fire works. In fact, the film reminds us of Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo with Ravi Teja playing the dual role as Raju & Bantu. Thus, the mass masala film badly misses on many counts.

Ravi Teja mercilessly beats the goons like in any commercial protagonist.  It is his energy which makes us sit through the entire film hoping for some miracle at the end. But no where one finds miracles. There is a small twist in the first half which also doesn’t work much. Once the cat is out of the bag, the film doesn’ have anymore twists or interesting elements saved for the second half.

The songs, though interrupt the story flow, give some relief in this badly written script. Thanks to Sreeleela again. She scorches the screens with her dance moves and short-skirts. It is a treat to watch her explode. The high-octane action scenes are meant for the genre fans. Dialogues also go overboard as they sound artificial. Indra-inspired scenes of Rao Ramesh & Ravi Teja and spoof of some other popular scenes from old films didn’t work at all.

The villain who was shown as smart and intelligent gets fooled which isn’t shown convincingly. These act as fillers. It is a weak point which is dragged till the end. The story and scenes are predictable. The production values are impressive. On the whole, Dhamaka leaves totally disappointed. It is a routine commercial potboiler with no surprises and no thrills.

Verdict: Dhamaka Songs – Dhamaal Script!

Rating: 2.5/5

Dhamaka Review: An Improbable Tale, But Quick, Undemanding Entertainment

dhamaka movie review in tamil

In  Dhamaka , a man’s two basal instincts go to war with one another. Kartik Aaryan as Arjun Pathak, a TV anchor, has fallen out of favour with his boss (Amruta Subash) and been demoted to the radio floor. Arjun is a bored radio jockey, looking for a break to seize his former position as primetime news anchor. His wife – Mrunal Thakur as Saumya Pathak – is a reporter at the same media house. When the film begins, we watch merry visuals of the young couple, being young and enjoying the pleasures of coupledom. They are presumably in love, cavort in lovely interiors, newly and happily married. Surprisingly, these moments aren’t cheesy the way romance is often depicted on Indian screens. The actors are at ease, comfortably intimate, and genuinely seeming to enjoy the other’s company. Just as we begin to warm up to them and their; antics, their rosy lives abruptly come to an end.

South Korean cinema is great at conjuring the implausible, and making it seem real and true on screen. In  Dhamaka , which is a remake of the Korean film  The Terror Live (2013), there are glimpses of what the original might have been. The Bollywood version moves fast after the initial frames that establish the context and the characters. One moment, Arjun and Saumya are shooting yet another cutesy couple picture to ‘gram, and the next, Arjun holds their divorce papers – we don’t quite know why until the end. He also channels the ensuing bitterness into soulless-but-cheery conversations with his listeners. One morning, when he settles into yet another robotic conversation, Arjun is jolted awake by a caller who threatens – and eventually carries out a terror attack.

By far,  Dhamaka  upholds a pace, and it’s easy to fall in step with it – no complex threads to unravel, or mental games that you need to keep abreast of. When the caller – seemingly an impoverished citizen let down by the state – threatens to blow up the Sealink in Mumbai and actually does it, Arjun immediately categorizes it as an opportunity to reclaim his lost position. He doesn’t report it to the authorities as sane people may do, but uses it to negotiate his way up with his boss. Soon though, he quickly realises what he willingly signed up for – no, we don’t get flashes of conscience until there’s an immediate threat to his being. Then, Arjun’s desires (i) to get ahead in his career – a primitive urban instinct, this – and (ii) his visceral response to being under attack, fight to survive.

Wild Dog: Nagarjuna’s Telugu Film to Release in Theatres on April 2, Skips Netflix Premiere

What follows is an inconceivable and entirely irrational sequence of events. During one instance, Arjun’s boss – a ruthless television head solely focused on maximising TRPs – pays up the ransom that the attacker demands to stay exclusive on the channel. It’s an entirely ludicrous premise even when you pass it off as a cruel urban construct. The next hour rapidly devolves into seemingly high-octane negotiations (with possibly disastrous consequences) between Arjun, his boss, the caller, and officials from the anti-terrorism unit for good measure. We don’t quit though – because for all its improbability and crude drama,  Dhamaka ’s strength lies in its pacing, and not dwelling on a plot feature for a moment longer than it needs to.

'Dhamaka' movie review A simple potboiler that mostly works

When you walk into a Ravi Teja film or a Trinadha Rao Nakkina directorial, you clearly know what you are signing up for—a true-blue Telugu masala entertainer—and that’s exactly what you get in Dhamaka. Like the title fittingly refers to, there’s an attempt to sensationalise everything here; every tiny action and movement is exemplified in slow-mo with a thumping score from Bheems Ceciroleo, and trust me when I say this, Trinadha Rao embraces the masala and loudness whole-heartedly and approaches even the silliest of the ideas with full conviction.

Dhamaka is yet another testament that this conviction is what separates Telugu filmmakers from others who try their hand at masala. There’s no stopping writer Prasanna Kumar Bezawada and Trinadha Rao when they are aiming to land a punch dialogue or a joke; they charge at it without respite and go full throttle. What could have been one-line gags here are fleshed out into extended sequences. Take, for instance, the scene where Swamy (Ravi Teja, back to what he does best, comedy) learns about the hierarchy of the goons and decides to hit the biggest of them all. You expect the joke to end with dialogues but no, the film spins a whole sequence of action out of it and garnishes it with Ravi Teja’s trademark comic timing. Does it serve a huge purpose to the story? Not really, but it doesn’t annoy you either. In fact, it amuses you at many points. That’s something I can say about Dhamaka as a whole.

The story has a heavy Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo hangover. There’s a rich family, a middle-class family, we are told there are two heirs, there’s an evil corporate villain (Jayaram, playing a cardboard character) who wants to grab the empire that belongs to the rich family, and a swap of sorts happens. You see, the elements are all there and the film does make the most of them for humour and mass action sequences. Dhamaka entirely exists on the writer’s conviction, and the makers’ attempts to not give the viewer any time to think. The moment you think about the logic of the story or why a character is behaving a certain illogical way, the entire film might come crashing down.

Some doubts about the narrative of Dhamaka are answered before the credits roll, but the reasonings are just not enough. Also, considering how the cold open is resolved, it is almost like the makers just cheated the audience. But, there is no dearth of explosive scenes in Dhamaka! When the big reveal comes during the interval, it works like a charm, and you are once again reminded of the magic of the interval bang. The only ambition Dhamaka harbours is to give these high moments.

Let me tell you about the fun I had with the film. Rao Ramesh is a hoot whenever he appears on the screen. There’s a reenactment of an iconic sequence from a Chiranjeevi film here and Rao Ramesh and Ravi Teja bring the roof down. After looking lost in Khiladi and Ramarao on Duty, Ravi Teja is back in his element, and with the film shaped around him and his strengths, it did feel good watching him do comedy that works. But it really is hard to overlook the age gap between him and his co-star Sreeleela, who plays Pranavi.

And there’s a distasteful husband-wife joke that was more concerning than funny. Yes, I know it’s a masala film but perhaps it is not too much to ask filmmakers to be a little more cautious about what they think is funny.Dhamaka, in all, delivers what it promised. It is a self-aware entertainer that doesn’t want to do anything more than entertain the audience. It feels engineered to cater to the masses, but that’s fine because it largely succeeds in doing what it set out to do.

Dhamaka Movie Review: Ravi Teja's film is Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo gone wrong

Director trinadha rao's nakkina dhamaka starring ravi teja, sree leela and jayaram has shades of allu arjun's ala vaikunthapurramuloo with certain twists. the film, however, ends up predictable, says our review..

Listen to Story

Ravi Teja and Sree Leela's Dhamaka hit the theatres on December 23.

  • Ravi Teja's Dhamaka hit the theatres on December 23.
  • The film is directed by Trinadha Rao Nakkina.
  • Ravi Teja is seen in two roles in the film.

Release Date: 23 Dec, 2022

A huge palatial house. Hero with parentage issues. The heroine is in trouble because of the parentage issue. Does it feel like the story of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo? Incidentally, this is also vaguely the story of Ravi Teja’s recently released film, Dhamaka. Did the team achieve what Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo achieved? Let’s find out!

Anand and Swamy (Ravi Teja in two roles) are similar-looking lads hailing from different backgrounds. While Anand is the heir to Chakravarthy’s (Sachin Khedekar) company, People Mart, which he calls an empire. Chakravarthy is diagnosed with a terminal illness and has only two months to live. As he ‘wants to die happily and successfully, trouble comes in the form of businessman JP (Jayaram). Meanwhile, Pranavi (Sree Leela) falls in love with Swamy but is confused because of his lookalike. How are Swamy and Anand related? Will Chakravarthy realise his dream?

As Dhamaka begins on a sad note, we are sucked into the story of what happened to the protagonist. 10 minutes into the film, we get a deja vu feeling as it reminds you of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. Props to Trinadha Rao Nakkina for the twist at the halftime mark that makes everyone sit up and be invested in this commercial potboiler.

Dhamaka sees Ravi Teja doing what he does best. His comedy timing and punches land well and he is totally in control of his craft. Director Trinadha Rao Nakkina had some interesting ideas up his sleeve in Dhamaka, however, they do not fire as often as expected. The screenplay treads on a predictable path because of which you are not completely involved in the story.

That said, some of the action stretches and sequences involving the antagonists are done to death and do not offer anything new. Ravi Teja is the heart and soul of Dhamaka in his two roles. Sree Leela gave a memorable performance as Pranavi. Her expressions are cute and her moves set the stage on fire. Sachin Khedekar, Jayaram, Tanikella Bharani and Rao Ramesh have performed in their roles. Hyper Aadi’s one-liners are hilarious and he made everyone laugh out loud.

Dhamaka’s story is written by Trinadha Rao Nakkina, Prasanna Kumar and Bezawada. Had the trio incorporated some fresh ideas into the story, the film would have been more engaging.

  • Movie Name: Dhamaka
  • Critics Rating: 3.5 / 5
  • Release Date: Nov 11, 2021
  • Director: Ram Madhvani
  • Genre: Thriller

It wouldn't be wrong to say that Ram Madhvani is a man you can trust when it comes to exploring the best in his actors. Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja is touted as her career-best performance and Sushmita Sen's web show Aarya is said to be a game-changer for the actress. All of these can be assumed for Kartik Aaryan's Dhamaka too. The film comes across as an opportunity for the actor to fracture the fetters of the whimsical roles that he is identified for. Dhamaka's Arjun Pathak gives him a possibility to explicate to the audience his range as an actor who's fitted for not only reciting long and hilarious monologues but presenting a character that is gritty, tense and has merit.

Ram Madhvani's 'Dhamaka' cruises in a countdown way. The congenial bustling builds up an exciting, jam-packed drama that tells a vital story of a struggling common man, journalism, politics, and how a couple of fateful calls in the midst of an ordinary day turn out to be a scary affair in Mumbai.

A big shot anchor who's been on top of his game for five years is demoted to be a radio jockey. He discovers he's been rigged with a bomb after a terrorist who blew up the Sea Link calls him up. He is flabbergasted but he sees an opportunity, an exclusive interview that nobody has and which can give him space back. He seizes it to recover his career.

Here, Kartik Aaryan’s character appears to be morally compromised by his judgment to take benefit of the terrorist, but he’s possibly the most naïve here – never sufficiently understanding the outcomes or even contemplating the consequences. He couldn't deem that he could be as used and tricked by his associates, police and the government, who reckon his life even less than he does others.

A mounting sense of escalation persists throughout Dhamaka. the Sea Link blows up, casualties happen and short timelines imposed by the attacker adds up to the existing tension. And the anxiety gets more critical and agitated as time goes on. Dhamaka succeeds in keeping situations grim and tense, despite a change in the degree of danger. We're regularly warned that innocent are likely to die any moment which kind of instils frustration as to why nothing is happening to save them. I was thumped by the clock near Kartik's desk that keeps reminding of the tickling time we have until the next deadline arrives. It builds to a curiously anarchic climax that we don't expect from a Bollywood film. It's a frightening situation to be in. Your only console is to know that this is just a film.

Retaining the account inside the confines of Arjun Pathak’s radio studio come makeshift newsroom set, Dhamaka succeeds in keeping the narrative taut. Your only escape to the outside world is the newsroom's window and the in-house monitors that update us about the chaos of the attack. Things appear more realistic as the camera steadily moves with handheld techniques. Madhvani deserves credit for holding his ground turf and resisting to step outside of the newsroom to make things more ambitious.

Amit Trivedi's Khoya Paaya is a song that helps build the mood for this triller and a melody that you'd want to hear on quiet evenings. The film also has Prateek Kuhad's Kasoor.

Dhamaka delivers all the kicks and tension one could anticipate from a movie about domestic terrorism. And as good as Kartik Aaryan is in this film, it's certainly the more prominent themes of cynicism and scepticism that makes Dhamka watchable. It is a kind of film that proves a story doesn't need grand scale conspiracy theories when the most explicit example for how the powerful impression the underprivileged is right in front of us.

Dhamaka movie review: Kartik Aaryan 2.0 delivers intense performance in this gripping thriller

Dhamaka movie review: kartik aaryan is seen in an intense, never-before-seen avatar in ram madhvani's latest thriller..

Dhamaka 's trailer pretty much promised us a Kartik Aaryan 2.0. And the film is indeed Kartik's most challenging performance so far. After being labelled as the monologue king, and having dabbled in romcoms such as Pyaar ka Punchnaama films, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Pati Patni Aur woh, Luka Chhupi and so on, Kartik's Arjun Pathak in Dhamaka not only shows his range as an actor but also touches upon a different genre and emotion.

Director Ram Madhvani, who has directed Neerja and series Aarya in the past, creates a world within one room that is full of tension, action, reaction and a sense of urgency. Dhamaka is loosely based on the 2013 Korean film, The Terror Live, and stars Kartik as a broadcast journalist named Arjun Pathak. He was demoted from a prime-time news anchor to an RJ but things change when he scores an exclusive interview with a terrorist who has blown up Mumbai's Sea Link bridge. Arjun Pathak gathers himself to be live on air amid a terror attack and what all goes through his mind while talking to his caller, is what keeps you engaged for 1 hour 43 minutes.

Here, I'd like to mention that film's appropriate length works in its favour. It never loses pace and keeps you on the edge right from the word go. No time is wasted in the build-up--neither for the story nor the characters. The film starts with a romantic song between Arjun Pathak and his wife Saumya (Mrunal Thakur) and cut to the first scene in the newsroom, we are told they are no longer together.

At this point, you'd expect to know the back story or some flashback of what happened, but the hows and the whys are answered organically. The script moves on without staying at one place for too long. Madhvani connects with you with the tensed environment that news anchors and journalists experience while reporting a breaking news from the studio or from the crime scene.

Also read: Sooryavanshi movie review: Akshay Kumar's high-octane action film is your Diwali gift this year

And I loved the dilemma that each character undergoes while doing their bit onscreen-- be it Kartik sitting in the studio and feeling helpless, Amruta Subhash in the control room bossing around, calm yet assertive, or Mrunal Thakur, reporting from bomb blast site and helping hostages, and man on the line, sharing his own ordeal. The portions when Kartik is negotiating with the him and buying time to sort things out give you real chills. However, a little more of Arjun and Saumya's love story could have been shown to add a different dimension to his character.

Madhvani never lets you digress from the present moment and that's the beauty of his storytelling, something that we also saw in Neerja. In the two hours within an airplane, we got to see so many emotions blending into one another and in Dhamaka as well, just one newsroom lets you experience so much under one roof.

For those of you who don't know, Dhamaka, in a way, sets a record of its own for the way the film was shot in 10 days using multiple cameras. The fabulous camera work capturing the intensity of scenes and emotions of characters explains the nitty-gritty and process that Madhvani and the team followed.

Even though Dhamaka isn't a film high on music but it's track Kya Khoya Paaya during the climax, pierces through your heart and stays with you for long, as it beautifully sums up the entire film. If you like thrillers, Dhamaka won't disappoint you and Kartik Aaryan , definitely impresses with his never-seen-before avatar and a convincing performance.

Dhamaka Movie Review: Kartik Aaryan Hits The Right Button And Pulls Off An Explosive Performance

Holding a tattered page from their divorce petition, Arjun Pathak (Kartik Aaryan) recalls his first conversation with his wife Soumya (Mrunal Thakur) when he had bagged his first prime time show. The scene rewinds back to their conversation.

' Nervous ?', Soumya asks Arjun to which he nods in agreement. When she too admits facing the same jitters, Arjun shoots back, " Tumhe nahin lagta ki main prime time ka show kar paunga ?" Hearing this, she denies and tells him, " Nahin usme toh ek percent ka doubt bhi nahin hai. Tum jab bhi kahunge naa jo bhi kahunga sach kahunga, log tumpar aankh band karke bharosa karne waale hai." On being asked why she is nervous, Soumya quips, " Maybe isliye ."

In a similar vein, Kartik Aaryan's latest Netflix release Dhamaka expects the viewers to whole-heartedly embrace the actor who seems to be finally stepping out of his comfort zone of frothy rom-coms and heart-warming bromance to play a character with a dangling conscience.

Available on: Netflix

What's Yay: Kartik Aaryan

What's Nay: Weak story

Story

Dhamaka begins with some intimate glimpses of prime time news anchor Arjun Pathak (Kartik Aaryan) and his reporter wife Soumya Mehra Pathak (Mrunal Thakur) from their social media feed before the scene cuts to present where the former is seen sitting a divorce file in his hand.

He is now working as a radio jockey in the same media conglomerate where he was once the star anchor. On one of his usual drab working days, Arjun gets a call from a man who threatens to blow up the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai unless his demands are met. Initially thinking of it as a prank call, Arjun turns a deaf hear only to realize that the man's threats ain't empty.

While scribbling down 'exclusive' on a paper, it dawns upon Arjun that this could be a perfect opportunity for him to reclaim his prime time show in exchange of the 'explosive' news. He dials up his boss Ankita (Amruta Subhash) and informs her of his findings. In the next few minutes, he quickly slips into his razor sharp look complete with zero power glasses, unknown to the fact that the proceeding events are all set to make a big 'dhamaka' in his life; both personally and professionally.

Direction

Ram Madhvani, the man behind Sonam Kapoor's film Neerja and Sushmita Sen's Emmy-nominated web series Aarya picks up the South Korean flick A Terror Live and reshapes in to fit into the Bollywood mould.

Through Dhamaka , he tries to give the audience a peek into what goes inside TRP hungry newsrooms and how " logon ke pas sach dhoondhne, samajhne ka time nahi hai ." It's interesting how he doesn't attribute faces to the audience who are supposedly watching these news channels. Madhvani maintains a balance in his story-telling by showing two faces of the same coin of journalism through his characters Arjun and Soumya.

On the flip side, the film scores less in the detailing of certain events which leaves you baffled at some points. Also, things tend to get too dramatic and exaggerated at places in a film which is supposed to throw light on the harsh reality of journalism. In a bid to focus on how 'breaking news' are created, Madhvani and his co-writer Puneet Sharma fail to tap into the emotional depth of the plot which could have made for a more effective film.

Performances

Performances

Kartik Aaryan ditches the sugary romantic hero act to pick up a character whose actions constantly keeps one guessing whether it's right or wrong. The film lies entirely on Kartik's shoulders and they turn out to be sturdy. He is one of the reasons why the thriller doesn't collapse in a heap when the writing is filled with plot holes and exaggeration at some points.

Mrunal Thakur in an extended cameo plays her part well. Amruta Subhash as the belligerent sans any empathetic bone makes for a brazenly delightful watch. Vikas Kumar and Vikramjeet Pradhan barely get a chance to exhibit their acting potentials.

Technical Aspects

Technical Aspects

Manu Anand's ace cinematography perfectly creates a claustrophobic environment for this pacy thriller. Manas Choudhury's sound design also adds to the tension and thrills in the film. Monisha Baldawa keeps her editing scissors sharp which prevents the film from falling all over places when the writing hits a block.

Music

Prateek Kuhad's 'Kasoor' featuring Kartik and Mrunal starts Dhamaka on a light note. Towards the end, the film leaves you with some pondering thoughts with Puneet Sharma's 'Khoya Paaya' for company.

Verdict

In a crucial scene, Karthik Aaryan's character Arjun parrots his boss' advice while dealing with a traumatic experience and says, " An anchor is an actor. An actor wants an audience. The audience wants drama ." While Kartik does manage to get an audience for Dhamaka , the film goes a little tipsy in terms of maintaining a fine balance between drama and realism.

We give 3 stars out of 5 for Kartik Aaryan-Mrunal Thakur starrer Dhamaka .

Dhamaka Movie Review

Dhamaka Dhamaka Dhamaka

Dhamaka Devesh Sharma , Nov 19, 2021, 20:37 IST

Kartik Aryan, Mrunal Thakur, Amruta Subhash, Vikas Kumar
Ram Madhvani
Thriller
1

Truth is one thing, news is another -- this is a cynical rant that we hear around newsrooms around the world. In effect, this line describes what Dhamaka is all about. The thriller is an official remake of the 2013 Korean film The Terror Live. It paints an unflattering picture of news channels. Dhamaka tells you that news is a drug and the different channels fight turf wars, like the mafia, to get the bigger piece of action.

Radio talk-show anchor Arjun Pathak (Kartik Aryan) gets a call from a man claiming he’s planted a bomb on the Mumbai Sea Link. Arjun cuts the call thinking he’s dealing with a prankster and the caller, angered, triggers off the bomb. A large portion of the bridge collapses and several commuters are left stranded on it. The caller calls back saying he wants an apology from the government for the death of three workers who were killed repairing the bridge some time ago. Arjun’s boss Ankita Malaskar (Amruta Subhash), who only cares for TRPs, converts the radio room into a TV studio as she wants to milk the situation for everything it’s worth. She even agrees to Arjun’s demands that he’ll be reinstated back on TV. He was removed from being a prime time anchor because of an unsavoury incident. His personal life too is in doldrums as his marriage with news reporter Soumya Mehra Pathak (Mrunal Thakur) is on the verge of divorce. Arjun feels that if successfully negotiates with the terrorist on live TV, he’ll be called a hero and will get another chance to get his career and life back. But as the minutes roll by, he comes to know how ruthless his profession can be. His bosses don’t care about the loss of human life and the police and the political system just want to save their own asses. The only person true to her calling is his wife, who has landed there as a journalist but lends a hand during the rescue operations. Seeing her going beyond the call of duty helps him come to terms with his own shallow nature and helps procure a change of heart. He also realises he’s as much a victim of the system as the terrorist who has planted the bombs…

The film was reportedly shot in 11 days, and that’s some kind of a record. That said, if you look closely, the environs of the film remind you of a film set. The CGI too could have been better. Ram Madhwani has given us the gripping hostage drama Neerja (2016) and he returns back to a somewhat similar milieu in Dhamaka. He’s made some intelligent casting choices indeed. Amruta Subhash is chillingly accurate in her portrayal of a corporate head honcho who only cares for profits. Her confrontation scenes with Kartik are gripping indeed. Mrunal Thakur too gets a short but meaty role of a dedicated journalist who still believes in the truth. She’s the emotional anchor of sorts of the film and we wish we saw more of her. But the boldest casting choice is that of Kartik Aaryan. The actor is known for doing rom coms and is called a monologue expert in the industry. Madhvani made him break the envelope and bring his vulnerabilities to the core. It takes him a while to get in the groove but as the film progresses, Kartik shows his emotive range. You see him change from being a cynical news anchor to someone who becomes the victim of the monster he helped create. It’s a new Kartik Aaryan we’re seeing here and we hope he takes more risks like these in future.

Dhamaka Movie Review: A simple potboiler that mostly works

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

When you walk into a Ravi Teja film or a Trinadha Rao Nakkina directorial, you clearly know what you are signing up for—a true-blue Telugu masala entertainer—and that's exactly what you get in their recent collaboration,  Dhamaka . Like the title fittingly refers to, there's an attempt to sensationalise everything here; every tiny action and movement is exemplified in slow-mo with a thumping score from Bheems Ceciroleo, and trust me when I say this, Trinadha Rao embraces the masala and loudness whole-heartedly and approaches even the silliest of the ideas with full conviction.

Director: Trinadha Rao Nakkina Cast: Ravi Teja, Sreeleela, Rao Ramesh, Jayaram Dhamaka is yet another testament that this conviction is what separates Telugu filmmakers from others who try their hand at masala. There's no stopping writer Prasanna Kumar Bezawada and Trinadha Rao when they are aiming to land a punch dialogue or a joke; they charge at it without respite and go full throttle. What could have been one-line gags here are fleshed out into extended sequences. Take, for instance, the scene where Swamy (Ravi Teja, back to what he does best, comedy) learns about the hierarchy of the goons and decides to hit the biggest of them all. You expect the joke to end with dialogues but no, the film spins a whole sequence of action out of it and garnishes it with Ravi Teja's trademark comic timing. Does it serve a huge purpose to the story? Not really, but it doesn't annoy you either. In fact, it amuses you at many points. That's something I can say about Dhamaka as a whole. The story has a heavy Ala Vaikuntapurramulo hangover. There's a rich family, a middle-class family, we are told there are two heirs, there's an evil corporate villain (Jayaram, playing a cardboard character) who wants to grab the empire that belongs to the rich family, and a swap of sorts happens. You see, the elements are all there and the film does make the most of them for humour and mass action sequences. Dhamaka entirely exists on the writer's conviction, and the makers' attempts to not give the viewer any time to think. The moment you think about the logic of the story or why a character is behaving a certain illogical way, the entire film might come crashing down.  A lot of doubts about the narrative of Dhamaka are answered as the credits roll, but the reasonings are just not enough. Also, considering how the cold open is resolved, it is almost like the makers just cheated the audience. But, there is no dearth of explosive scenes in Dhamaka ! There's a reenactment of an iconic sequence from a Chiranjeevi film here and Rao Ramesh and Ravi Teja bring the roof down. After looking lost in Khiladi and Ramarao on Duty , Ravi Teja is back in his element, and with the film shaped around him and his strengths, it did feel good watching him do comedy that works. But it really is hard to overlook the age gap between him and his co-star Sreeleela, who plays Pranavi. And there's a distasteful husband-wife joke that was more concerning than funny. Yes, I know it's a masala film but perhaps it is not too much to ask filmmakers to be a little more cautious about what they think is funny. Dhamaka , in all, delivers what it promised. It is a self-aware entertainer that doesn't want to do anything more than entertain the audience. It feels engineered to cater to the masses, but that's fine because it largely succeeds in doing what it set out to do.

  4. Dhamaka movie review

Bheems Ceciroleo composed the soundtrack and background score for Dhamaka. He deserves credit for keeping the movie racy. "Danda Kadiyal", "Ninnu Chudabuddhi Avuntndi", and "Pulsar Bike" songs are turning out to be foot-tapping numbers. Cinematographer Karthik Ghattamaneni ensured that the movie looks rich and stylish.

  5. Dhamaka (2021)

Dhamaka: Directed by Ram Madhvani, Heavenveer Singh Hayer. With Kartik Aaryan, Mrunal Thakur, Amruta Subhash, Soham Majumdar. Reassigned from TV to radio, a frustrated anchor sees both danger and opportunity when he receives threatening calls on the air.

  6. Dhamaka Movie Review

  7. Dhamaka Review: An Improbable Tale, But Quick, Undemanding

In Dhamaka, a man's two basal instincts go to war with one another. Kartik Aaryan as Arjun Pathak, a TV anchor, has fallen out of favour with his boss (Amruta Subash) and been demoted to the radio floor. Arjun is a bored radio jockey, looking for a break to seize his former position as primetime news anchor. His wife - Mrunal Thakur as Saumya Pathak - is a reporter at the same media house.
