Has anyone here gone through the Phd admission process? I'm trying to find someone to answer some basic questions and chat about it.
Background: MS in Space systems (GPA 3.8), has courses in space systems engineering, etc. Employment has been primarily government both in policy and space operations at the senior/executive type level.
I've applied for both the public policy and GIS Phd Programs. Still on the fence, deciding on a "technical" or the policy program. Work will pay for either, but I'm being pulled both ways.
I'm interested in looking at magnetic anomaly detection (remote sensing) in the GIS program. The department admittedly doesnt have the facilities but I know of a company or two with the sensors that would let me use them for research. On the other hand some of those who are encouraging me to do it are pushing me toward policy because I'm on the path of taking a much more senior position and they see it as broadening.
I was looking for general information about how the admissions process works (both apps are in and complete). Do they do interviews, etc?. Also, how competitive are the programs?

I was reading about George Mason and their economics program. I find interesting the Austrian approach, classical liberalism and public choice as their strength. Anyway, how hard is it to get an admission? I mean, from what I read, they have a pretty high acceptance rate (88%) and a low enrollment (66%). Is it true? Anyhow, I am applying to it.
