A critical take on education and schooling
The 50 great books on education
Professor of Education, University of Derby
View all partners
I have often argued that I would not let any teacher into a school unless – as a minimum – they had read, carefully and well, the three great books on education: Plato’s Republic, Rousseau’s Émile and Dewey’s Democracy and Education. There would be no instrumental purpose in this, but the struggle to understand these books and the thinking involved in understanding them would change teachers and ultimately teaching.
These are the three great books because each is sociologically whole. They each present a description and arguments for an education for a particular and better society. You do not have to agree with these authors. Plato’s tripartite education for a just society ruled over by philosopher kings; Rousseau’s education through nature to establish the social contract and Dewey’s relevant, problem-solving democratic education for a democratic society can all be criticised. That is not the point. The point is to understand these great works. They constitute the intellectual background to any informed discussion of education.
What of more modern works? I used to recommend the “blistering indictment” of the flight from traditional liberal education that is Melanie Phillips’s All Must Have Prizes, to be read alongside Tom Bentley’s Learning Beyond the Classroom: Education for a Changing World, which is a defence of a wider view of learning for the “learning age”. These two books defined the debate in the 1990s between traditional education by authoritative teachers and its rejection in favour of a new learning in partnership with students.
Much time and money is spent on teacher training and continuing professional development and much of it is wasted. A cheaper and better way of giving student teachers and in-service teachers an understanding of education would be to get them to read the 50 great works on education.
The books I have identified, with the help of members of the Institute of Ideas’ Education Forum, teachers and colleagues at several universities, constitute an attempt at an education “canon”.
What are “out” of my list are textbooks and guides to classroom practice. What are also “out” are novels and plays. But there are some great literary works that should be read by every teacher: Charles Dicken’s Hard Times – for Gradgrind’s now much-needed celebration of facts; D. H. Lawrence’s The Rainbow – for Ursula Brangwen’s struggle against her early child-centred idealism in the reality of St Philips School; and Alan Bennett’s The History Boys – for Hector’s role as the subversive teacher committed to knowledge.
I hope I have produced a list of books, displayed here in alphabetical order, that are held to be important by today’s teachers. I make no apology for including the book I wrote with Kathryn Ecclestone, The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education because it is an influential critical work that has produced considerable controversy. If you disagree with this, or any other of my choices, please add your alternative “canonical” books on education.

Books for Kids Starting Middle School
From a Judy Blume classic to mysteries both otherworldly and close to home, these 11 titles capture the nerve-racking first days of tweendom — and all the wonderful and terrible days that follow.
By Jennifer Hubert Swan
Jennifer Hubert Swan is the library department chair at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, N.Y.
As a career school librarian, I have experienced many exhilarating (and exhausting) first days of middle school. All summer long, it seems like that fabled first day will never come: Then, in a rush of hugs, high fives and assemblies, it’s over before you’ve even had a chance to stop and smell the cafeteria pizza. These 11 titles that range from the sublime to the ridiculous aptly convey those nerve-racking first days of junior high — and all the wonderful and terrible days that follow.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
By judy blume.
For many current and former middle schoolers, reading AYTGIMM is a rite of passage. This classic bildungsroman for the prepubescent pack is also an exceptional starting-school story: Who can forget Margaret’s argument with her mother about not wearing socks with her brown loafers because “Nancy says nobody in the sixth grade wears socks on the first day of school!” Fortunately, Gen Z doesn’t have that problem .
Dread Detention
By jennifer killick.
Sometimes middle school is actually hell. When seventh graders Angelo, Hallie, Gustav and Naira show up to serve Saturday detention at Dread Wood Academy, they have no clue that they are about to discover a mad scientists’ lab and be stalked by giant, mutant arachnids. Wickedly funny horror aside, what sets this paperback apart are the thoughtful character arcs: Each student is hiding a secret that, once shared, creates an unbreakable bond that allows the group to face their personal and real demons together.

Wisconsin judge rules governor properly used partial veto powers on literacy bill

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers properly used his partial veto powers on a school literacy bill, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Dane County Circuit Court Judge Stephen Ehlke’s decision marks a victory for the Democratic governor as he works to stave off Republican attempts to rein in his partial vetoes, one of the few ways he can block or soften GOP initiatives.
The dispute centers around two bills designed to improve K-12 students’ reading performance.
The governor signed the first measure in July 2023. That bill created an early literacy coaching program within the state Department of Public Instruction as well as grants for schools that adopt approved reading curricula. The 2023-2025 state budget that Evers signed weeks earlier set aside $50 million for the initiatives but didn’t actually distribute any of that money.
Evers signed another bill in February that Republicans argued created guidelines for distributing the $50 million. The governor used his partial veto powers to change multiple allocations into a single appropriation to DPI, a move that he said would simplify things and give the agency more spending flexibility. He also used his partial veto powers to eliminate grants for private voucher and charter schools.
Republican legislators sued in April, arguing the changes Evers made to the bill were unconstitutional. They maintained that the governor can use his partial veto powers only on bills that actually distribute money and the February bill didn’t allocate a single cent for DPI. The legislation, they insisted, was merely a framework for spending.
Online court records indicate Ehlke concluded that the bill is an appropriation bill and as such is subject to partial vetoes. The $50 million for the literacy initiatives, however, will remain in the Legislature’s control. Ehlke found that lawmakers properly appropriated the money to the Legislature’s finance committee through the budget, and the committee has discretion on when to release it.
The Legislature’s lead attorney, Ryan Walsh, declined comment.
Evers tweeted that he was glad Ehlke upheld his partial veto powers that “Wisconsin governors have exercised for years.” But he said that he disagreed with GOP lawmakers “obstructing” the release of the literacy funding, and he plans to appeal that ruling.

Fort Bend ISD approves new library policy that gives the superintendent sole power to ban books
SUGAR LAND, Texas (KTRK) -- Instead of a committee, one person will decide the fate of Fort Bend ISD library books.
The fight over library books is center stage at Fort Bend ISD. On Monday, the school board approved a policy that would allow the superintendent to remove books instead of a five-person committee.
The change had Anna Lykoudis Zafiris fired up.
Zafiris is part of a Friends of FBISD Libraries group. She spoke at Monday's meeting about the proposed policy that she believes would give the superintendent too much power.
"This is a very bad omen for the district," Zafiris explained. "It shows that these board members are not respecting professionals in the educational sphere."
Before the new policy, if a book is challenged, the district buys five copies for the committee to read and determine if it should stay, be removed, or restricted.
The policy allows the superintendent or a designee to remove a book. The superintendent can also create a committee but would have the power to singlehandedly overturn any recommendation.
"That's a compromising situation for a superintendent to be in because of the influence and the power the board has over them," Zafiris said. "They could lose their job because they serve at the board's discretion."
One member of the board has pushed for this change for months. Earlier this summer, ABC13 obtained records from the district showing David Hamilton was the only board member who challenged books this year.
After the story ran, Hamilton told ABC13 that as many as 10 others also challenged books. Hamilton said he challenged the books despite not reading them, only excerpts.
Months ago, he explained why he wanted fewer people making the decision.
"I think that process is appropriate if it's more of a debatable gray area situation, but I don't think anybody would say we should have a school book in our libraries where a teacher is grooming and then having a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old," Hamilton said in June.
In the documents ABC13 obtained, Hamilton said the challenged books were suited for perverted adults. Despite this, the review committee didn't remove all the books.
A University of Houston education professor told ABC13 about the importance of having a diverse committee participate in the process. Some parents say they're worried books could easily be removed from shelves.
"We need to trust the educators," Zafiris said. "This is the reason we're educating the new doctors, lawyers, teachers, librarians, and astronauts. They have a purpose."
The one person ABC13 hasn't heard from about the potential change is the person who could be tasked with removing books-- the superintendent.

As an educator, I used to come out to my students every September. But I'm keeping my identity to myself this year.
- Every school year, I came out to my college students and was usually accepted.
- But coming out was mentally taxing, so I'm not coming out to my students this year.
- I am still ensuring my classroom space welcomes and accepts all kinds of students.
My voice trembled, and my heart pounded as I stood before the class of about 30 college students on the first day of English Composition 101.
"I didn't get to read many LGBTQ+ authors growing up," I said. Then, taking a deep breath, I took the plunge: "As a queer person myself, I believe we need to see ourselves represented in books."
When I taught 18-year-old college freshmen , it felt like jumping off a cliff every time I came out to a new class — usually on the first day. I loved introducing the students to the acclaimed queer authors who helped me feel comfortable in my own skin when I was a teenager.
The authors' names — Michael Cunningham, Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Allison, and Alice Walker — are still sacred to me today.
But now, I'm no longer coming out to my students and still prioritizing their education.
I felt freer as a queer educator, but it came at a price
It was the early 2000s, and in many ways, it was a more welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ teachers .

Still, when I taught college in New York state, queer teachers' freedom was new and fragile. Colleges and universities have always tended to be more open for queer teachers than K-12 schools, but I was still scared to come out as an untenured teacher working with teens — many of whom were religious. There was always fear that I'd be punished for announcing who I am.
Thankfully, coming out was almost always positive. Students smiled or seemed immediately more relaxed. Only one or two tensed up or looked away, seeming uncomfortable. No one ever got up and left the room.
After coming out each semester, I'd move on with my lesson, feeling vulnerable, relieved, and lighter.
I no longer make coming-out announcements
These days, I'm more comfortable in my skin as a queer person, so I don't feel the need to make a formal declaration at work anymore. The fear of retaliation takes too much out of me.
But I still ensure my space is queer-friendly .
Currently, I'm a school librarian serving elementary and middle school. Even among the youngest of students, I regularly encounter kids identifying as queer or trans. Some students even have LGBTQ+ parents . So, I still need to create a welcoming environment.
My storytime and research lessons emphasize the acceptance of gender diversity. The stories also depict that love can take many shapes and forms. These lessons are also important for students with nontraditional family structures — such as those raised by a single parent or living with grandparents.
We read cute, silly, and wise picture books such as "Worm Love Worm" by J. J. Austrian and Mike Curato, where the characters are gender-neutral . In June, I showcase books like "Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Gay Pride Flag" by Rob Sanders and Steven Salerno. Throughout the month, I proudly showcase my progress pride flag in the middle school library and happily explain the symbolism of all the colors and patterns.
Queer people are woven into the fabric of my teaching, but I've just chosen not to share who I am anymore to protect my own mental health.
Being an LGBTQ-inclusive teacher can save lives
In 2022, the Trevor Project found that 45% of LGBTQ+ youth considered suicide in the last year. I feel responsible as an educator to help students grow and thrive — and not feel invisible or ashamed.
This September, I will proudly display a copy of my favorite gender-expansive book, "Teo's Tutu" by Maryann Jacob Macia. And when a student asks me what the book is about, I'll say, "It's about learning to be happy in your own skin."
I'll invite the students to reflect and connect. "What does being comfortable in your own skin mean to you?"
When I started teaching, it felt great to say, " I am queer ," out loud. But these days, I celebrate my queerness in my personal life and conserve my energy while I'm at school.
