  • What is EdD? Is it equivalent to PhD? EdD stands for Doctor of Education, a professional doctoral qualification in education, an accredited programme under the National Accreditation Board of Malaysia issued by Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA/FA0666). Unlike a PhD which basically focuses on research that produces excellent researchers, EdD studies that focus on specially chosen subjects stimulate, inspire and transforms students’ professional thinking and practice, whilst developing a profound understanding of how relevant supervised academic research can resolve real-life professional issues. Yes, EdD is equivalent to PhD. PhD is a research degree. EdD is a professional and research degree. It is designed to meet the needs of those who are interested in pursuing their doctoral studies in education after achieving a master degree, and possesses experience for at least two years in the field of education.
  • Does the OUM EdD follow the US or UK version? Essentially there is not much difference between these two US and UK version, in terms of their structure. EdD was first awarded in 1920 by Harvard University. University of Bristol in the UK, was the first university in Europe that started the programme in 1993, essentially following Harvard’s structure. From there, EdD spread out all over the world. Almost all universities, including OUM, that offer EdD programmes have a common structure that is made up of courses to be taken by candidates before starting their research projects. Well, yes, there are certain variation in terms of the nature and subject areas, and the number of subjects in all EdD programmes, depending on the chosen concentrations, such as curriculum, management, ICT and policy.
  • Master’s degree in Education, or
  • Master’s degree other than Education and possess Bachelor’s degree in Education; or
  • Master’s degree other than Education and possess Diploma/Certificate in Teaching; or
  • Master’s degree other than Education and possess at least 2-year teaching experience; or
  • Master’s degree other than Education and pass three (3) bridging courses offered by the university; or
  • Any equivalent qualifications recognised by the Malaysian Government
  • How long is the EdD study duration? EdD students spend the first two years of the program completing valuable coursework and the final two years working on their dissertation. However, candidates may take up to a maximum of eight years to complete their studies.
  • When is EdD intake? All semesters, (January or May or September semesters).
  • How much is EdD fees? Please refer to the OUM portal.
  • What is the medium of instruction of the programme? English. However, students may write their assignments and Dissertation in English or Bahasa Melayu.

  • 40 credit hours of Proposal and Dissertation.
  • How many EdD credit hours for graduation? 80 credit hours
  • What about EdD course assessment? There is no final examination for all the taught courses. Students need to do coursework (100% weightage) and pass with a minimum of Grade B for each subject, including a concept paper, after which students will start writing research proposals that they need to defend successfully before they are allowed to proceed further.
  • How are the courses in EdD conducted? It is a blended learning (face to face tutorials, online or e-tutorial learning support and self-managed learning). However, presently, all course tutorials at OUM are conducted via google-meet.

My MBA journey in AeU was incredible and a worthy investment. Working and studying in Malaysia was not only challenging but an amazing part of my career and life. I love Malaysia as it is multiracial, progressive, peaceful and a wonderful food paradise. AeU offers an immersive personalised learning experience with its advanced myPLS learning system and digital library accessible anytime and anywhere. I had the perfect work life balance with AeU’s flexible study arrangements that suited my career. AeU has definitely won a special place in my heart.

Ho Ken Fatt

I enjoyed AeU’s flexibility mode of learning, which enabled me to complete subjects and study according to my pace, place and time without giving up my own business and quality family time. Entrepreneurship was my chosen concentration subject to strengthen my knowledge, supplement my real-life business experiences and other essential skills. Despite my many challenges in time-management, yet I could excel in my studies. I was supremely happy and honoured to bag three awards at the AeU’s 7th convocation.

Dr. Florence Chia

I have the ambition to seek further understanding in the business of training and skills development and to upgrade my quality of teaching delivered and to ensure high quality standards are improved and maintained. I choose AeU because it offered distance learning DBA programme with a flexible blended mode of learning where I can study from my hometown without giving up on my career.

The quality of my supervisor assigned by AeU is great. I can approach my supervisor through email or face to face appointment. The academic facilitators are very professional and knowledgeable with education and industry experiences.

The biggest challenges faced during my DBA study was time management when I have to arrange for flights to AeU Kuala Lumpur campus for a few mandatory assessments, attend the colloquium and meet my supervisor. As a full-time employee, I have to plan an itinerary to balance my time between my family, work and study without affecting my college duties. I was able to overcome all the challenges by multitasking and delegating my work to others.

The most rewarding part of the DBA programme is the relevance of the subjects that focuses on theories and methodologies that are related to the competitive business environment and how business management thrives in the 21st century. The programme not only gave me knowledge and confidence but had also overcome my fears that had always held me back. The invaluable DBA qualifications had brought a new dimension into my life to achieve a successful career in the near future,” she testifies.

“My success is attributed to my family’s support, encouragement and assistance by AeU’s Dean, academic facilitators and staffs. It was a great learning experience for me and I would certainly recommend AeU’s programmes to others,” she concludes.

Edgar Jude De Souza

I like the PhD programme because of its flexible mode of learning coupled with its affordability that allows me the freedom to manage my work, family and study at the same time. My learning has been accelerated through a wonderful and supportive academic environment which is characterized by creativity and innovation, networking and partnership, and most importantly collegiality and togetherness towards academic development.

Dr. Lim Kai Hoe

The programme has opened up my mind to be more flexible in term of juggling between varieties of roles as a part time student, a full-time executive manager, a husband, a father, a son and a son-in-law. It made me a stronger person, have more empathy and understanding as a whole while I reap the fruit of my hard work by earning a “Dr” in front of my name.

Dr. Jacob Benson Aidoo

The programme has sharpened my research and analytical skills. The knowledge gained enriched my contribution to my organisation and improved the quality of my writing skills in my work. I am satisfied with the quality of professionalism of the AeU academic and administration staff.

The rigorous curriculum is constantly updated to reflect the evolving industry in Early Childhood Education. The course is interesting and have improved my self-confidence and time management in my attempts to balance work and study.

Chow Choi Chin

Having to strike a balance between work, study and family life were tough, yet it was the flexible learning mode that enabled me to manage and excel in my studies, with a concentration in Early Childhood Education, earning me the Chairman’s Award at AeU’s 2014 convocation. The qualification has broadened my knowledge in Early Childhood development and confidence to be an effective educator. It had given me an edge on alternative choice if I decide to veer into a different career path in future.

Chow Chee Keong

I learned valuable inputs on how to refine and improve my research paper presented at one of AeU’s postgraduate research seminar on an in-depth study of how children behaved under various play situations. Teaching mathematics through plays shows how teacher-engineered socio-dramatic play was effective in promoting mathematical learning especially in the area of logical mathematical processing. As the founder/owner of a pre-school, the degree provided an added endorsement of qualification not only for me but also to my school.

Leh Siong Lu

The programme was interesting and practical for me. It is an unforgettable experience that has broadened my perspective and provided me with new insights in my teaching career. The learning experiences steepen my learning growth curve in life. As I expand my mind through the learning process, the programme gave me the keys to break barriers in my teaching career and helped me greatly in developing my expertise in the education field.

W. Siti Nurulhuda bt W. Mahmood

Muhammad Aizul Bin Azeman

I enjoyed the Bachelor of Education programme offered by AeU as it was created specifically for those who did not have the time or opportunity to enter the traditional university. The flexible learning is best for teachers like me who do not want to give up their jobs to further their tertiary education. My knowledge in teaching has increased tremendously and I am thankful to AeU.

Rohani bt. Su

The flexible learning mode adopted by AeU gave me the convenience and flexibility in accessing learning materials, submitting my assignments online at my own pace anytime and from any locations. The programme helped me to explore the latest techniques in teaching to be a better teacher. Despite the challenges of managing my time in work and doing the assignments in private, I was able to excel in my studies. AeU thus is a boon for people like me who aspire to obtain their degrees while in employment.

Dr. Muhammad Nusran R. Tugilan

I am glad the results of my research had enabled me to produce a model that can be used for the benefits for all, especially in the academic world in future. My wife, Agussari Henny is also an AeU student in PhD (Education). Both of us fell in love with AeU due to the uniqueness of its programmes and its unparallel flexible mode of learning.

The learning environment is stimulating and it is above my expectations. My AeU experience was enriching, eye-opening, self-discovering, humbling, and fun. I invite others to enjoy this.

Dr. Nazaruddin Bin Ishak

I have benefited greatly in knowledge from AeU’s MBA and DBA programmes. I would not hesitate to recommend others for a lifelong learning at AeU. It had enabled me to achieve my dream and mission, which is to assist the young and inspiring entrepreneurs to be successful in their business ventures.

Dr. Nixon Alberth Simamora

AeU offers an immersive online learning experience with live face-to-face classes, real-time discussions and creating vibrant social network that enabled me to study and interact 24/7 with professors, academic facilitators and fellow classmates who live and work around the world. Such interactions offered more than what I know of traditional on-campus programme.

I like the way AeU runs its MICTM programme. The theories learnt are very relevant and applicable to my work. Students should be highly motivated and enthusiastic with an inquisitive mindset.

Why choose this programme?

As a school, we are committed to improving and investigating transformative and effective practices in Education. You will study in a supportive, dynamic and inclusive environment with an international team from across the globe. Many of our colleagues are research active with ongoing national and international research grants.

How to apply

If you are interested in applying to do an MPhil or PhD in the School of Education we would recommend that you either

  • discuss your proposed project with a relevant supervisor in the first instance. We provide a dynamic research environment where research students study alongside academic experts or
  • contact the Director of Postgraduate Research Programmes, Dr Lina Guo .

Please include the following documents when contacting us:

  • a research proposal demonstrating skills and knowledge at postgraduate level (MA)
  • your CV and a short covering letter outlining why you want to study at PhD level and what previous experience makes you suitable
  • a copy of your academic transcripts (BA and MA, if applicable)
  • a copy of an acceptable proof of English language proficiency (if relevant)(Combine all documents into ONE file)

Your research proposal will help the School establish whether we have the expertise to support your proposed area of study. It will also be used in reviewing the overall quality of your application. While you will further develop your research proposal after joining the School, it is essential that you have an in-depth understanding of the issues associated with conducting research and the potential to design a research study to address a specific set of research questions.

Proposals are reviewed both on content and format. Due to the high number of proposals that we receive, we review incoming during the application revision period that is defined as the first week of the following months: January, March, May, September and November. Please note that we do not have the capacity to provide feedback for incoming proposals at this stage of application. If your proposal meets the requirement of the School, you will be invited for an interview. Please note that only applicants successful at this stage will be formally invited to submit an application, which together with visa application may take weeks in certain situations. Malaysian applicants are recommended to submit your formal application at least three months before the intake that you intend to commence your study. International applicants are recommended to submit your formal application at least five months before the intake that you intend to commence your study. General guidelines for writing a research proposal for the application of MPhil or PhD with the School of Education. Please visit our applications page to find out how to submit a formal application.

Structure of a PhD journey

First year candidates will undertake a research methods module in order to gain a more in-depth background in designing and conducting quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research. The first year (probationary year) is seen as a bridge between undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional experience and the required independent level of research. Candidates spend this year broadening their knowledge in the area of interest, refining their proposal, developing the methodology, securing ethical clearance, and collecting some initial data. At the end of the first year, this well-developed research proposal and the research skills gained are assessed in a mini-viva with an internal assessor. In the second year, candidates collect and analyse data, while continuously engaging with the literature and refining their chapters. The progress made this year is also assessed by an internal review, where the internal assessor determines whether requisite progress has been made in order to submit it at the end of the third year. The third year is primarily focused on preparing and writing up the thesis, which is defended in an oral examination (viva voce) by an external examiner who is an expert in the field.

MPhil students must present a thesis of up to 60,000 words, embodying the results of their advanced study and research. The thesis must satisfy the examiners regarding knowledge of the general field of scholarship to which the subject belongs. An oral examination occurs at the discretion of the examiners. PhD students must present a thesis, a maximum of 100,000 words, demonstrating originality and innovation on the subject of their advanced study and research. The thesis must satisfy examiners regarding knowledge of the general field of scholarship to which the subject belongs. They must also present themselves for an oral examination on the subject of their thesis and its general field of scholarship.
